Expert opinion and recommendation
A handcrafted race bike that rivals the Moto GP is the pinnacle of motorcycle riding. The BMW HP4 Race has a racing history, huge torque, and everything else required to put that power to good use. It may even appear like a good deal when you compare the pricing to that of its rivals. Still, only the most dedicated riders should use this.
Recent news and announcements
In a recent comparison, the 2018 BMW HP4 Race was pitted against the 2022 BMW M1000RR to see which bike comes out on top. The HP4 Race, with its full carbon frame and lighter weight, showed impressive performance, especially in acceleration and handling. However, the M1000RRs advanced technology, such as shift cam, gave it an edge at higher speeds. I believe both bikes have their strengths, but the HP4 Races unique features make it a standout on the track.
A brand new, barely used BMW HP4 Race is up for sale in Sheffield, UK, with only 1.6 kilometers on the odometer. This limited-edition bike, one of only 750 produced, features a full carbon fiber frame, Öhlins suspension, carbon rims, and Pirelli racing tires. It is not street-legal and is exclusively for track use. The price tag is a hefty £48,899. I believe this is a rare opportunity for serious collectors and enthusiasts to own a piece of motorcycling history.
BMW Motorrad has highlighted the extensive testing and safety measures undertaken for the HP4 Race. The bikes carbon chassis and wheels were subjected to three years of rigorous testing, including impacts against high kerbs, to ensure optimal safety and performance. This level of testing is unprecedented and underscores BMWs commitment to quality. I think this attention to detail is what sets the HP4 Race apart from other racing bikes.
The BMW HP Race rivals the Ducati 1299 Superleggera in Malaysia and was recently launched in the country a few months back. This powerful bike retails for a massive RM 520,900, excluding insurance. The HP Race is powered by a 999 cc liquid-cooled 16-valve inline-four DOHC engine that churns 215 hp and 120 Nm of output. The bike bags electronics like four ride modes (wet, intermediate, dry 1, and dry 2), 15-level traction and engine braking control, GPS, data logging joins lap timing. Limited to just 750 units, the BMW HP Race is a hand-built machine by a dedicated team in Germany. In Malaysia, the limited run of the HP Race is covered by a 2-year warranty.
The production of the BMW HP4 Race at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin is a testament to the companys dedication to precision and performance. Each bike is handmade by a team of specialists, with a production time of about eight hours per unit. This meticulous process ensures that every HP4 Race meets the highest standards of quality and exclusivity. I think the handmade aspect adds a unique touch to this already impressive bike.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on BMW HP4 Race
BMW HP4 Race is an impressive track specific model with the majority of body parts made from carbon fiber. This results in an impressively low wet weight of 171.4 kg. A liter class bike that weighs 25 kg less than a standard track bike will definitely mean faster sprints and better control on hard corners. The motorcycle can only be compared with Ducati 1299 Superleggera as it was also a lightweight limited production motorcycle with high use of carbon fiber and performance spec exhaust system. BMW HP4 Race is powered by a 999cc, inline-4 engine producing 215 HP at 13900 rpm and 120 Nm at 10000 rpm.

The values are even higher in comparison to regular liter-class motorcycles. Seat height measuring 831 mm in not that tough as certain other motorcycles like Yamaha R1 (855 mm). Riders are offered with 17.5 liters of fuel carrying capacity and claimed top speed breaks the 300 kmph barrier with ease. The impressive throttle response due to low weight and the high-performance engine will help BMW justify the price tag of INR 85 lakh. Using race spec transmission also helps BMW push maximum available power to the rear wheel.
BMW HP4 Race comes with a dry weight of just 146 kg while wet weight is even little above the value mentioned by KTM for RC390 on its official website. One can imagine the throttle response that KTM offers 43.5 HP and thus, getting 4 times more power at same weight will be simply astonishing. HP4 Race uses the most premium available components in the racing section. The exhaust used here is Akrapovic full titanium WSBK system while carbon wheels with Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slick SC2 further help in class-leading grip levels. Suspension components used here are from Ohlins while braking is handled by Brembo calipers.
