Yamaha YZF-R6 Review

16 Jan, 2019 01:58 PM

Overview

2018 Yamaha R6 is available in selected markets as most countries where CBUs are highly taxed does not have space for 600cc performance segment. This is because these four-cylinder 600cc racers are priced very close to the litre class options and thus, a market does not allow two totally different set of products to exist below a small price difference. As R1 is currently available for INR 18.12 lakh, Yamaha won’t be able to place R6 under INR 14 lakh and thus, would not be able to justify it against existing products. Still, the design language of R1 and R6 is completely identical. 2018 Yamaha R6 rivals Suzuki GSX-R600, Honda CBR600RR and Kawasaki ZX-6R. Apart from these three brands, Triumph offers a similar spec, 3-cylinder Daytona 675R in competition.

Yamaha R6 is powered by a 599cc, four-cylinder engine producing 118.4 HP at 14,500 rpm and 61.7 Nm at 10,500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. It weighs 190kg and thus, a huge loss of torque and power is seen for just 10kg of weight reduction from Yamaha R1. Both bikes have high seat height and thus, riders with average built would struggle to get their feet planted all the time. Equipment on both bikes is almost identical. Yamaha R6 comes with a top speed of 262 kmph while high performance is seen through its 0-100 kmph sprint time of 3 seconds. This makes it more powerful than many litre-class sports tourers. A rider can achieve more than 325 kilometres of riding range when handled carefully. Yamaha uses a fully digital instrument console for R6 while Yamaha R3 comes with semi-digital instrument console. R15 Version 3.0 is highly inspired from R6 and R1 as it also comes with wing design rear seat panel and fully digital console.
