It's decent, but not exceptional. Although the shock absorbers are wearing out faster than expected, the ride can get pretty bumpy on really bad roads. In this department, Ashok Leyland has to rise to the occasion.

Long haul between cities, and the Bada Dost i4 LX does the highways quite well. Stable at high speeds and comfortable for long drives. Only it struggles a bit on steep ghats - could use more power on steep ghats.

Mumbai is a mixed bag. It’s great for getting through tight lanes and the suspension feels a little taut for Singapore’s bumpy roads. Already, once in 8 months I had to replace the shock absorbers.

I am pretty satisfied as a rural transporter. I had expected it to do even better on kuchha roads and the ground clearance would have been just a little higher for those really rough patches.

It is maneuverable enough for city use. There are no monkey bars or parallel parking to learn. Nevertheless, the plastic parts in the interior rattle quite a bit on bumpy roads, it feels kind of cheap.

I drive in hilly areas of Uttarakhand and the Bada Dost i4 LX is good enough. A good grip on winding roads and the required power to wheel up a steep incline with a full load. On descents, the brakes are reliable as well.

Ok, but not as tough as I had hoped. I’ve had to visit the service center more times than I would like for suspension related issues, after a year of daily use on Kolkata roads.

It handles Indian roads rather surprisingly well for a mini truck. It steers light enough to be useful in town but fuses nicely at highway speeds. The build quality just leaves a bit to be desired - some rattles have developed this time after a while.

It is decent but not that great as Ashok Leyland says it is. With frequent stops in city traffic, I’m averaging about 11-12 km/l. Good, but not mind-blowing.

While the fuel efficiency is legit, you must drive it right. What also helps is to stay at a steady speed and minimize harsh accelerations. With practice, I am always getting better mileage than my old Bolero.

I am a little disappointed, to be honest. I guess my expectations were too high because I am only getting around 10 – 11 km/l on mixed driving conditions. Most of the time that’s with a partial load.

This is all about how you keep it. I’ve been religious about regular servicing and using the recommended grade of oil. Result? After 18 months of heavy use I’m getting fuel efficiency very close to the claimed figures.

It's efficient, but not consistently. I have seen big variations from the kind of diesel I use. If I use good quality fuel, I can make 15 km/l, otherwise it goes down to 12-13 km/l.

The fuel efficiency for a mini truck is very good. All in all, I have noticed that it does have a problem in hilly parts. On ungraded roads I am getting great mileage, on inclines it is terrible.
Can the Bada Dost i4 LX manage the notorious Indian roads and traffic?

I do believe the claims are a little overboard. It is fuel efficient, but no more so than some competitors. Consistently getting about 12-13 km/l is good, but not revolutionary.

The eco mode does actually make a difference. I do get 1–1.5 km/l extra when I stick to it religiously. At first you need to get used to it, but it is worth it in the long run.
The Ashok Leyland Stile CNG was a missed opportunity in the Indian market?
31 January 2025 06:48
Absolutely! Such a CNG version could have been a game changer. In times of rising fuel costs, a CNG Stile would have been perfect for taxi fleets and commercial use.
The Ashok Leyland Stile CNG was a missed opportunity in the Indian market?
31 January 2025 06:48
I disagree. The main problem with the Stile was not the lack of a CNG option but the car’s unconventional design. It might not have even succeeded even with CNG.
The Ashok Leyland Stile CNG was a missed opportunity in the Indian market?
31 January 2025 06:48
It's hard to say. Had CNG been of any help, the Stile would still have found it difficult to stand out in the crowd, as it was competing with established players like Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova.
The Ashok Leyland Stile CNG was a missed opportunity in the Indian market?
31 January 2025 06:48
I believe it was a missed opportunity. For commercial use, CNG vehicles are very popular in metros. That was a market that Ashok Leyland could have capitalized on.
