Was the Mahindra Naya Commander the most underrated Indian car in its time?

The Mahindra Naya Commander was unique among Indian vehicles, manufactured from 2005 to 2010. It was unique for the time, offering a combination of 9 seater, 4x4 robustness and a boxy design. These attributes notwithstanding, it never became a popular item and was discontinued. Looking back some automotive enthusiasts claim the Naya Commander was unfairly ignored and failed to receive the recognition it deserved during its production life. The vehicle was ahead of its time with its versatility, practicality and off road prowess, they claim, and the vehicle deserved more recognition than it got. Some, though, argue that its subpar performance was the result of deliberate poor design, inadequacies in performance, or insufficient market exposure.

Underrated? More like overpriced. This was too expensive for what it was offering.

Definitely underrated. It was essentially the Indian market's Hummer mini.

The real underrated gem of that era was the Tata Safari, nah.

I will give it that, it was unique. However, to be unique isn't always a good thing.

Underrated for sure. Had it been given more time, it could’ve been India’s answer to the Land Rover Defender.

Now, it might’ve been a gas guzzler in terms of practicality, but it was a gas guzzler. That in itself made it hard to justify.

It was ahead of its time. These days, everyone wants a boxy SUV with lots of room.

Naresh on 12 January 2025 02:55
Underrated? No way. It deserved to be rated mediocre at best, and that’s exactly what it was.

Mahindra had potential, but he didn’t develop it enough. A few more iterations could've been great.
