Yamaha NIKEN MXT850 Review

23 May, 2018 09:23 AM

Overview

Yamaha Niken was first seen at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. An unconventional motorcycle in itself, Niken is categorized under ‘trike’ segment due to a total of three tyres. Yamaha has made the same on MT-09 and thus, pricing was not given a major bump due to part sharing. Niken is available in selected markets and the base price for the same is £13,499 (INR 12.32 lakh approx, without import duty). India spec Yamaha MT-09 is priced at INR 9,55,575 (ex-showroom). Niken comes with twin upside forks on each front tyre, that too arranged in opposite direction than standard bikes.

The front fascia flaunts huge fairing and equally sizeable windscreen for enhanced rider comfort. The twin disc brakes seen on MT-09 are seen far away from each other here as each tyre now holds one of them. That also results in two front fenders and rear view mirror mounted blinkers, both of which are exclusive to Niken only. Twin projectors and LED daytime running lights results in a sharper than ever front impression. Rider will get standard handlebar design and all digital console on Yamaha Niken. The rear end of Niken is exactly similar to Yamaha MT-09.

Niken is powered by an 847cc, three-cylinder engine producing 115 HP at 10,000 rpm and 87.5 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The power is still available on a 190/50-17 sized wheel but handling changes completely due to an addition of the third wheel. First, the weight goes up by a considerable margin to 263 kg. Secondly, the setup offers 45-degree lean angles and going lower than that is not possible. Niken comes with cruise control for easy highway rides while dual 15-inch front tyres offer impressive levels of grip for safe riding. Indian launch for the product is still a secret from Yamaha.
