TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS Review

Expert Review

Apache RTR has proved to be a very successful bike from TVS. Initially, it was launched with a 150cc engine but looking at the warm reception of this bike in India, TVS soon upgraded this bike and re-launched Apache with a 160cc engine. This bike created a new segment in our Indian bike market and became the first of its kinds. Recently, TVS has brought on some new changes in this bike and now promotes it as Apache RTR 160 with SuperMoto ABS. Does it have the guts to take on the army of other 150cc bikes? Let’s find out.

TVS Apache RTR has always been a short and compact bike and the new bike is no different. The new Hyper Edge starts from where its previous generation ended. There are many new changes in this bike which are easily noticeable. TVS has worked on its face and the bike looks more attacking and aggressive than before. Its cowl and tinted visor looks much sharper than before with a stretched headlight. Apache now features day time running LEDs combined with new pilot lamps which certainly adds premium touch to this bike. It does resemble to the outgoing model but with its new clear lens indicators and headlight, it looks more trendy and futuristic. Its front fender and racing strips on its wheels remains intact. The bike gets new engine cowl and tank cowl which improves the aerodynamics of this bike and adds visual bulk to it. There is new stretched rear panel which looks cool with its split grab rails. At the back, its dual colored tail light, sharp fender and rear tyre are similar to its previous generation.

The bike features a neatly designed instrument panel with all essential indicators. It has a big white dial for its analogue tachometer on the right side while it sports a big LCD for its digital speedometer, odometer and trip meter on the left side. The bike now uses blue back-lit display which replaces the orange color used in its previous generation. TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS is powered by a single cylinder, 4-stroke 159.7cc engine. This engine delivers a power output of 14.91 HP at 8000 rpm. Its torque output of 13.03 Nm is usable at 6500 rpm. TVS has equipped this 2-valve engine with a five speed manual gearbox having a gear shift pattern of one gear down and four gears up.

TVS Apache completely justifies the word RTR (Racing Throttle Response) in its name. The bike has many advantages over its other competitors. It weighs lighter and its engine generates more power than its other rivals. These factors help this bike to get the best power to weight ratio in its class. The bike feels an enthusiast from the very first move. With this bike, you can complete 0-60km/hr in less than 6 seconds. The initial gear ratios are very crispy which makes it quite fast in city traffic. You shouldn’t be no complaining about its gear transitions also. However, the refinement level of this engine is a matter of concern. This engine turns really noisy at high rpm levels and vibrations are quite evident after 5000rpm. The harshness level is less than before but there is still room left for improvement. Apart from refinement, this engine is pretty enjoyable. It can easily reach the top speed of around 115km/hr which is certainly better than others. Its early availability of torque is a boon in city traffic and without much gear shifts; you will be pleased with its stress free ride.

The Apache RTR 160 offers low seating with a very comfortable seat. The clips on handlebar are also placed a bit low in order to give you a sporty riding posture. Its tank offers nice grip to your knees and the palm grip is firm and tight. RTR 160 Hyper Edge features rear set foot-pegs which are more suitable for short riders. We would say there is less knee space for the tall passengers as you always have to bend slightly forward to reach its handlebar. It’s a comfortable bike for short rides but your back might need rest on long runs. Advanced gas filled rear shock absorbers and telescopic front forks are fitted in Hyper Edge. The standard braking system of this bike sports a big 270mm disc brake at its front and rear disc brake of 200mm on this bike. The motorcycle is now also available with 1-channel ABS as standard.

The bike offers a superb handling which makes it very light and responsive. It handles best in city traffic and feels under control all the time. The suspension system also improves its ride quality and it manages to offer a comfortable ride. The bike now comes with an extended wheelbase of 1300mm which adds more stability to this bike. It’s still not the best around sharp corners but its high speed stability has improved significantly. It has a high ground clearance (165mm) which enables it to go pass the worst potholes and high speed breakers easily. We feel it’s a complete value for money bike as it’s more powerful and economical than many 150cc bikes. Moreover, it’s stuffed with many premium features and offers a sporty riding experience. Yes, there are some issues related to its engine refinement and ride quality but looking at its price; it certainly deserves a chance. At present, the new TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS is available in 5 shades in India: Gloss Black, Pearl White, Matte Blue, Matte Black, and T Grey.
