Why do some riders swear by the fuel efficiency of the Discover 125, while others complain it's a gas guzzler?

I have two Discovers and the mileage difference is night and day. I think they have good batches and bad batches. When you buy one, it’s like a lottery.

People need to be realistic. It's not a 125cc bike, it's not a miracle worker. The mileage claimed is under ideal conditions. It's going to be lower in real world traffic. Mine's pretty efficient for what it is, though.

The issue is a bad fuel gauge. Mine is always empty way too soon, so people think it's using more fuel when it isn't. Don’t just check how often you fill up, check your actual km/l.

Weight matters a lot. I’m a big guy and I usually have a lot of things with me. I don't get great mileage but my lighter friends with the same bike get much better efficiency. That's not a flaw in the bike, that's physics.
The Bajaj Discover 125 Drum Brake claims to be the commuter king, but is it?
29 January 2025 07:06
Having been a daily commuter for the past 3 years, I’d say the Discover 125 definitely deserves the tag of being the 'commuter king'. It is no joke when it comes to fuel efficiency, I easily get 65-70 kmpl in city riding. The engine is butter smooth and the seat comfy enough for my 30 km round trip. It’s not the most exciting ride, but it’s a sure thing when you want to get from A to B reliably and cheaply.

I've got to disagree. When it first launched, the Discover 125 was great, but it’s been left behind by the competition. They are hit or miss on build quality and the drum brakes feel somewhat inadequate in heavy traffic. I’ve had multiple rattling parts and electrical gremlins. Today you can get bikes with better features and performance for a similar price.

That really depends on your priorities. The Discover is still a no frills, fuel efficient commuter if you want one. If you’re after any sort of excitement or modern features, there are better options out there. I would argue it's still a contender, but it's no longer the undisputed king.
The Bajaj Discover 125 Drum Brake claims to be the commuter king, but is it?

The Discover 125 is basic transportation, nothing more, let’s be real. And that's just what a lot of commuters need. It is affordable, easy to maintain and gets great mileage. Not everyone wants or needs fancy features on their daily ride. In that respect, it's still very much the 'commuter king' for a big chunk of buyers.

I don't think any bike is the 'commuter king'. Other bikes in that class are decent but so is Discover 125. It depends on what kind of deals you can get and what you’re looking for. There is a big plus for Bajaj, as their service network has kept ownership costs down. Even that alone might make it the best choice for some commuters.

I have owned both the Discover 125 and a competitor and I can say the Bajaj still holds its own. It's noticeably better in the ride quality on rough roads and great in stop and go traffic thanks to the low end torque. But the drum brakes are certainly a weak point. Today it would be much more competitive if they offered a disc brake option.

The title of "commuter king" is more marketing than reality these days. The Discover 125 is a good bike, but it's getting old. The instrument cluster is dated and there is no such thing as LED lights or a USB charger. It's still a good commuter, but it's not the 'king' by any stretch in 2024.
Is the KTM 790 Duke’s little brother, the Svartpilen 801, worth the premium over it?
28 January 2025 09:39
Absolutely worth it. Stunning design and it turns heads everywhere. You’re getting exclusivity and style that the Duke can’t match.
Is the KTM 790 Duke’s little brother, the Svartpilen 801, worth the premium over it?
28 January 2025 09:39
No way. That's just a fancy Duke at a higher price. If you want performance, save your money and get the KTM.

Depends on what you value. If you care about looks a lot, go Svartpilen. The Duke is the better deal if it's pure performance.

In ride quality, the premium components of the Svartpilen do make a real difference. The Duke feels more refined than this.

28 January 2025 09:39
If you can afford it, I’d say it’s worth it. The Svartpilen is that conversation starter and has that cool factor the Duke doesn’t have.
Is the KTM 790 Duke’s little brother, the Svartpilen 801, worth the premium over it?
28 January 2025 09:39
Neither. If you can’t afford a new bike, get a used Triumph Street Triple R and you have the best of both worlds: style and performance.

Something that will help the Svartpilen hold its value is its uniqueness. One thing to think about if you think you’ll sell.
Should the iconic Maruti Omni Ambulance be kept in automotive museums?
28 January 2025 09:25
Yeah, hell yeah, it should be in museums! It’s as much a part of Indian culture as chai and cricket. It’s not a car, it’s a piece of our history. The future generations must see the real jugaad.
Should the iconic Maruti Omni Ambulance be kept in automotive museums?
28 January 2025 09:25
Museum? Please. All it is, is a basic van with a red cross slapped on it. It's nothing special, nothing innovative. We should be showing real automotive achievement, not celebrating mediocrity.
