General information and overview

The Honda CBR650R is a standout in the middleweight sports bike category, boasting a 649cc inline-four engine that sets it apart from its competitors. This engine produces 87 bhp at 12,000 rpm and 5.7 kgm of torque at 8,500 rpm, making it a joy to ride, especially in the higher rev range. The bike features a 6-speed gearbox, now enhanced with Hondas E-Clutch system in the 2024 model, which simplifies gear shifts and improves fuel efficiency. The suspension is handled by a 41-mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston fork and a Pro-Link monoshock at the rear, providing a smooth and planted ride. With dual-channel ABS, HSTC (Honda Selectable Torque Control), and LED lighting all around, the CBR650R is well-equipped for both daily commuting and spirited riding. The bikes design is inspired by Hondas Fireblade series, giving it a sleek and aggressive look that appeals to sports bike enthusiasts. Overall, the CBR650R offers a perfect blend of performance, comfort, and technology, making it an excellent choice for riders seeking a versatile and powerful motorcycle.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Honda CBR650R is a stellar addition to the middleweight sports bike segment in India, offering a unique blend of performance, comfort, and technological advancements. What stands out is its refined 649cc inline-four engine, which, although detuned for Indian market conditions, still delivers an impressive 87 bhp at 12,000 rpm and 5.7 kgm of torque at 8,500 rpm. The riding experience is enhanced by the silky smooth clutch and the well-tuned suspension, including the 41-mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston fork. The introduction of Hondas E-Clutch system in the 2024 model is a game-changer, making it easier for both novice and seasoned riders to navigate through heavy traffic and enjoy seamless gear shifts. However, the riding position, while sporty, can be tiring for longer rides, especially for less fit riders. Overall, the CBR650R is a well-balanced, agile, and engaging bike that is perfect for those who want a mix of daily usability and high-performance capabilities.

Honda has filed a design patent for the 2024 CBR650R in India, indicating a possible launch in the near future. The bike is expected to retain its 649 cc, liquid-cooled, in-line four-cylinder engine producing 93 bhp and 63 Nm of torque. It will also feature a 6-speed gearbox and Hondas E-Clutch technology. I think the E-Clutch system will be a game-changer for riders looking for convenience and performance.

Hondas new E-Clutch system in the 2024 CBR650R combines the benefits of a quick shifter and dual clutch transmission, allowing for smooth up and down shifts without the need for the clutch lever. This system is active upon ignition and prevents stalling, making it a significant feature for both new and experienced riders. I think this technology will make the riding experience much more enjoyable and efficient.

The 2024 Honda CBR650R has been showcased at EICMA 2023 with significant updates, including a sharper design language inspired by the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade. The bike features a redesigned tail section, new LED headlamps, and updated fairing with additional ducts and vents. It also comes with Hondas E-Clutch system, allowing for gear shifts without using the clutch lever. I believe this new design and technology will make the CBR650R a compelling option in the Indian market.

The 2024 Honda CBR650R is set to be launched in India early next year, according to recent reports. The bike will come with two accessory packs: the Racing kit and the Comfort pack. The Racing kit includes a quickshifter, a taller smoked screen, and other performance-oriented accessories, while the Comfort pack offers heated grips and luggage options. I believe these packs will cater well to different types of riders, enhancing the bikes appeal.

The mileage of the Honda CBR650R in Indian conditions is a crucial factor for potential buyers. Given its powerful engine and sporty nature, the fuel efficiency is relatively decent. The claimed fuel economy is around 20 kmpl, although real-world figures can vary based on riding conditions and style.
