BMW R18 First Edition
About
The BMW R18 First Edition is a cruiser motorcycle that stands out with its massive road presence and nostalgic design. Powered by the worlds largest air-cooled boxer-twin engine, this bike offers an internal-combustion experience like no other. The engine, though quiet compared to expectations, delivers immense torque and grunt, making it a joy to ride on both straight roads and twisty corners. The bike features a low seat height of 690mm, a wide handlebar, and forward-positioned footrests, which, although unconventional, provide a comfortable riding position. Additional features include keyless ignition, switchable traction control, three riding modes, and a digi-analogue gauge. The R18 also boasts excellent brakes and a suspension setup that is slightly on the firmer side, enhancing its handling capabilities. With its unique blend of old-school charm and modern technology, the R18 First Edition is a must-consider for any motorcycle enthusiast looking for a distinctive and memorable riding experience.

Our take on this /// Verdict
The BMW R18 First Edition is a motorcycle that embodies the essence of a classic cruiser while infusing it with modern technology and performance. My experience with this bike has been nothing short of exceptional. The massive 1,802cc air-cooled boxer-twin engine delivers an unparalleled torque that makes every ride memorable. Despite its hefty weight of 345kg, the bike handles surprisingly well at highway speeds, thanks to its well-positioned engine and the sticky Michelins. However, the low foot pegs and the forward-positioned footrests can be a bit of a challenge, especially for those accustomed to traditional cruiser ergonomics. The absence of cruise control in the Indian market is a notable omission, but the bikes character and soul make up for it. Overall, the R18 First Edition offers a unique riding experience that is hard to match, making it a must-consider for anyone looking for a distinctive cruiser.

While it is certainly on the higher side, the R18 First Editions unique blend of heritage, performance, and quality makes it a worthwhile investment for enthusiasts who value a distinctive riding experience.

The BMW R 18 First Edition has been discontinued as of the 2022 model year. This decision was part of several model revision measures announced by BMW Motorrad. The R 18 will continue to be available in other variants, including new color options and accessory packages. I think this move might help BMW focus on other popular models and streamline their product lineup.

The design of the BMW R 18 First Edition is heavily inspired by the 1936 R5, with a double-loop steel frame, teardrop fuel tank, and exposed final drive shaft. The bike also includes several premium features such as heated grips, an alarm system, and Reverse Assist. I think the timeless design and additional features make this bike stand out in the cruiser market.

In India, the BMW R 18 was priced starting at Rs. 17,50,000 for the base model, with the First Edition costing around Rs. 19,87,000. The bike has been well-received, with many test riders opting to purchase it. I believe the pricing is competitive, especially considering the unique features and heritage design.
Monday, 25 January 2021 06:03 PM
There have been some reports of manufacturing issues with the BMW R 18, including cases of catastrophic engine failure and incorrectly torqued fork head screws. However, these issues seem to be rare, and BMW has been addressing them through their service channels. I think its important for potential buyers to be aware of these potential issues but also to note that they are not widespread.

The BMW R 18 First Edition features a powerful 1,802cc boxer engine, producing 91 hp and 116 lbs-ft of torque. This engine is the largest boxer engine BMW has ever built, and it comes with modern technologies like Integral ABS, traction control, and three ride modes: Rain, Rock, and Roll. I believe the combination of traditional design and modern tech makes this bike a compelling choice for cruiser enthusiasts.
Mileage
Monday, 18 November 2024 09:13 PM
The mileage of the BMW R18 First Edition is not its strongest suit, given its large engine and cruiser design. With an engine capacity of 1,802cc, fuel efficiency is not a primary concern for this bike. In real-world conditions, you can expect a mileage of around 15-20 kml, depending on your riding style and the terrain. However, for those who prioritize the raw power and character of this motorcycle, the mileage is a secondary consideration. The R18 is designed for those who enjoy the thrill of riding a powerful, torque-rich engine, and the occasional long ride or weekend getaway, rather than daily commuting. Ex Showroom Price vs On Road Price |
Ex-Showroom Price is the Manufacturing Cost of the vehicle + Dealer/Seller Profit + GST (Goods and Service Tax) + Transportation Charges (from the manufacturing plant to the dealership). On the other hand, the On-Road Price is the actual cost you pay to the dealership to make the vehicle legal to run on the roads. It includes Ex-Showroom Price in your city + RTO Charges (Vehicle Registration) + One Time Road Tax + Insurance Charges. The On-Road Price also includes some optional things like if you opt for Genuine Accessories and Extended Warranty while buying a vehicle. Please note that the On-Road Price varies a lot across different states in India due to different percentage for the State Registration Charges. |
