Yamaha R15 V4 Review
Detailed Review by Maxabout Team
Overview
The Yamaha YZF-R15 can easily feature on the list of most popular motorcycles sold in India. A very potent 150cc engine, a phenomenal delta box frame and a very sporty styling were a few quality features of the Yamaha R15 which had truly blown the minds of the customers back in 2008 when it was first introduced. And over its 14 years of lifespan, the motorcycle has only gotten better. Now, for 2022, Yamaha has introduced the fourth version of the R15 with certain changes which promised to make it even more extraordinary.
Yamaha R15 V4 Design and Style
If we talk about the looks, unlike the R15 V3’s dual-LED headlamp layout, the latest-gen R15 V4 series has a single-pod LED headlamp with integrated LED DRLs. The styling of the Yamaha R15 V4 is inspired by the new model of the Yamaha YZF-R7 and its elder sibling, the YZF-R1 and that is pretty evident from its front fascia. So, it gets a nice projector headlamp which is nestled within the central air intake and it is flanked by slim LED DRLs which look like those eyes of a predator. The sculpted fuel tank, the angular fairing and the nice rake tail section get large scoops and all this sporty appearance collectively makes it a true delight for the eyes. However, the most significant change in the new-gen model of Yamaha R15 is the addition of upside-down (USD) front forks, which have replaced the conventional telescopic forks.
Yamaha R15 V4 Engine and Gearbox
The thing that hasn’t really changed in the motorcycle is its power plant. This 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine comes equipped with Yamaha’s variable valve actuation. The engine generates 18.4 HP power at 10,000 rpm and a max torque of 14.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The motorcycle is quick in the lower rev band however once it gets past the 4,500 rpm, the engine really comes alive.
Instrument Console of Yamaha R15 V4
Yamaha R15 V4’s instrument cluster continues to be an LCD unit however, the updated console gets Bluetooth connectivity now. It pairs with the rider’s smartphone application, the Yamaha Y-Connect app and provides call, SMS and email alerts while giving phone battery level status as well. The updated display also has a road and a track mode. Overall, the all-digital instrument console is perfect in terms of size and displays a lot of required information.
Yamaha R15 V4 Brakes, Suspension and Tyres
The braking system comprises a 282mm front disc with a twin-piston calliper and a 220mm rear disc with a single-piston calliper. The R15 V4 stands on 17-inch alloys shod with a 100/80-17 front tyre and a 140/70-R17 rear radial tyre. The suspension package carries premium golden coloured upside-down forks at the front end and a monoshock absorber at the rear end.
Key Features of Yamaha R15 V4
Some of the key features of the Yamaha R15 V4 include - Advanced Fully Digital LCD Meter Console, Assist & Slipper Clutch, Variable Valves Actuation (VVA), Traction Control System, Quick Shifter (Optional), Upside Down Front Forks, Super Wide 140mm Radial Rear Tyre, Side Stand Engine Cut-Off Switch, Y-connect App - Call Alert, SMS & Email, Phone Battery Status, Fuel Consumption Tracker, Maintenance Recommendations, Last Parking Location, Malfunction Notification, Revs Dashboard, Ranking, Dual Horn, Aluminum Swingarm, Class D Bi-Functional LED Headlight, LED Position Lights, Street and Track Riding Modes.
Yamaha R15 V4 Top Speed and Mileage
Yamaha R15 V4 offers a mileage of around 40 kmpl under mixed riding conditions and if we talk about its performance, this sports bike is capable of accelerating from 0-100 kmph in around 10 seconds while the top speed of R15 V4 hovers around 145 kmph.
Yamaha R15 V4 Colour Options
Unlike the previous generation model, the company is offering multiple variants to choose from. The R15 V4 basic model comes in two colour options including Metallic Red and Dark Knight. These can be equipped with a quick-shifter at an additional cost. The most expensive variant of the R15 V4 is the Racing Blue edition and it comes with a quick-shifter as standard.
Yamaha R15 V4 Price Range in India
The price range of Yamaha R15 V4 starts at Rs 1.77 lakhs in India for the Metallic Red colour, next comes the Dark Knight edition with a price tag of Rs 1.78 lakhs while the top-spec Racing Blue edition is available in the Indian markets with an ex-showroom price tag of Rs 1.82 lakhs. If we talk about the on-road prices, R15 V4 on-road price is Rs 2.09 lakh in Delhi, Rs 2.16 lakh in Mumbai, Rs 2.12 lakh in Kolkata and Rs 2.15 lakh in Chennai. The prices mentioned here are approximate and we suggest you contact your nearest Yamaha dealership to get an exact on-road price quote in your city.
Difference Between Ex-Showroom Price & On-Road Price
Ex-Showroom Price is the Manufacturing Cost of the vehicle + Dealer/Seller Profit + GST (Goods and Service Tax) + Transportation Charges (from the manufacturing plant to the dealership). On the other hand, the On-Road Price is the actual cost you pay to the dealership to make the vehicle legal to run on the roads. It includes Ex-Showroom Price in your city + RTO Charges (Vehicle Registration) + One Time Road Tax + Insurance Charges. The On-Road Price also includes some optional things like if you opt for Genuine Accessories and Extended Warranty while buying a vehicle. Please note that the On-Road Price varies a lot across different states in India due to different percentages for the State Registration Charges.
Yamaha R15 V4 Competitors in India
For a similar price, the Yamaha R15 V4 competes with the likes of KTM RC 125, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, KTM 125 Duke and the Suzuki Gixxer SF250. Other than these, there are no such direct rivals of the bike in the Indian market.
Verdict - Should You Buy Yamaha R15 V4?
The Yamaha R15 was already a fantastic motorcycle for what it is meant for and the changes it has received. It has become an even more enticing proposition. So, while the strong points have been retained there are additional bits like USD forks, traction control, quick shifter, a Bluetooth enabled console and all of these things makes it even fancier.
