Our take on this /// Verdict

Yamaha R125 has an evident R-series DNA right from start to end. It has a sleek front end with a sharp LED headlamps setup and a sporty tank layout that makes it stand out from the herd. It borrows its major design inspiration from its elder siblings the Yamaha R6 & R1. Yamaha YZF-R125 is surely one of the best-looking 125cc supersport bikes. It has a fuel-injected & liquid-cooled engine. With the high-quality paint schemes and sharp design, along with a reliable engine, Yamaha YZF-R125 is surely one of the best in this segment.

Yamaha has unveiled its 2023 YZF-R125. This is the smallest supersport motorbike manufactured by the Japanese automobile company. This bike now comes with new design language as seen on the R15 V4 and the YZF-R7. Notably, the changes on this bike are more than cosmetic, making this bike more leaner. The Yamaha YZF-R125 has got a completely revamped bodywork borrowed from the YZF-R15 V4. So, it comes with a centrally mounted LED projector headlight flanked by LED DRL on either side of the bike.

Tuesday, 12 November 2024 11:59 PM The 2024 Yamaha YZF-R125 is expected to be priced around Rs 1.25 lakh in India, although it is still listed as upcoming and not officially available. This bike boasts a sporty design inspired by larger R-series models, a powerful 125cc engine, and advanced features like a TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity. I think this pricing positions it well as a premium option in the 125cc segment.
Friday, 04 November 2022 08:12 AM Yamaha has recently unveiled the updated R125 with a sleek new design, aligning it with its larger siblings, the R15 V4 and R7. The bike features a central projector headlamp and LED DRLs, enhancing its sporty appeal. It also includes new features such as traction control and a 5-inch colour TFT screen with Bluetooth connectivity. I believe these updates make the R125 a compelling choice for young riders.
Friday, 04 November 2022 03:02 PM The 2023 Yamaha YZF-R125 has been globally debuted, but there are slim chances of it being launched in India. The bike borrows its looks from the R15 V4, including a single projector LED headlight and LED DRLs, and features a 5-inch full colour TFT instrument screen with Bluetooth connectivity. I think the absence of this model in India might be a missed opportunity for local enthusiasts.
Friday, 04 November 2022 06:24 PM Despite its advanced features and sporty design, the Yamaha YZF-R125 is not planned for launch in India. Instead, Yamaha might update the India-spec R15 V4 with some of the R125s features, such as the 5-inch colour TFT screen. I think this could be a good compromise, but its still disappointing for fans of the R125.
Tuesday, 14 June 2022 08:21 PM Yamaha has introduced a new Sports Pack for the YZF-R125 in the European market, which adds several aesthetic updates such as a taller windscreen, new stickers for the wheels, and an artificial carbon-fibre finish. However, there is no news on the launch of this pack or the bike itself in the Indian market. I believe this pack would be a great addition if it were available in India, enhancing the bikes sporty look.

Yamaha YZF-R125 Review

12 Sep, 2024 09:33 AM

Detailed Review by Maxabout Team

Being a motorbike aficionado and a reviewer, I have relished riding all types of motorcycles in my testing career. Today is the day when I want to express my opinion on the Yamaha YZF-R125, a sporty 125cc machine which has gained notoriety quite fast in recent years. The bike is not officially sold in India but this bike has caught up quite a lot worldwide and is a perfect sample of what a sports bike of such a low capacity can be.

Taking a look at the YZF-R125 for the first time, you will notice that its design is very sporty and aggressive. From the outset, it can be seen that Yamaha has worked hard to train this 125cc motorbike fabulously as others in the YZF-R line. For me, who does not see the form in form follows functions, I could not fathom how much visuals Yamaha was able to integrate into a learner bike.

Creativity and Design

One of the main attractive features of YZF-R125 is its design remarkably. It quasias of its bigger relations, especially YZF-R7, presents big bike looks making it even more appealing. The front end is rather aggressive with sharp cut lines topped with R7 inspired LED projecting headlamps and position lamps. The nose also features a central air intake which, apart from adding to the sportiness of the machine, has an effective function of directing air towards the engine.

As for the rest of the bike, the rider’s seat fuel tank is adroitly embossed such that the rider is comfortable yet the sporty shape is not lost. The cowl makes a good show of contours that are pleasing to the eyes as well as functional in terms of reducing drag. The tailpiece is short, high mounted, and shaped in the manner of sport motorcycles, finishing off the look of a racing machine.

In my opinion, I find the design to be one of the strongest factors for the case of YZF-R125. In this design, each rider is made to believe that they are riding a bigger capacity bike, this one is particularly for the younger volume-seeking riders. Details range from the low-profile LED taillights to the bright color paint finishes with options of Tech Black and Icon Blue, which are worth noting.

Performance and Powertrain

Central to the cycle is a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, 4-valve, SOHC engine of 125 cc displacement. Even though this seems basic in the outward view, Yamaha has added quite some remarkable technology to ensure that the levels of performance are achieved within the A1 license restrictions.

A complete revolution in engine technology is the Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system, which has revolutionized the 125 cc category in motorcycles. This type of two-cam system accentuates low-end torque while the other focuses on high-end power during the use of an engine. One of the innovative designs is the ECU-controlled solenoid that exists on some of the engines, and this one changes cam lobes roughly around 7400 RPM whereby one can use these things broad power bands—1180 cubic centimeter engines and those just range.

The engine’s amazing figures of 15 HP power output are made at 10000 RPM, whereas torque output of 11.5Nm is generated at 8000 RPM. These figures sound unimpressive to veteran riders, but for a 125cc, making them, these figures are the best one can get. What most exceeded my expectations, however, was how responsive the engine was to every single twist of the throttle and how readily it climbed through the proverbial power band. Gentle power delivery is very linear from the bottom and pretty easy to control for beginners but still fun enough for more experienced hands.

The six-speed transmission is quite smooth while engaging gears and retaining an adequate offset between the individual ratio. It is also a nice touch to include a slipper clutch, which helps in preventing rear-wheel hopping during aggressive downshifting, which is a feature often found on bigger sports bikes.

Moving onto the performance figures, YZF-R125 is able to notch a speed well beyond 120 km/h (indicated on speedometer), which is quite commendable in its category. The bike, however, is also capable of brisk acceleration, especially with 0-100 km/h time reaching around 15.2 seconds. Although these times might not break new ground, for a novice bike, they are more than enough and make a good base for improvement of riding skills.

Features and Technology

The YZF-R125 does not spit two pairs of ten and less in terms of equipment for the 125th machine. It is novel to note that the 2023 model will have a 5-inch TFT display, which is very onboard features in high-end and large motorcycles. This kind of display screen brightness control is very efficient in all lighting conditions, and even more customizable for them can be the respective backgrounds "Street" and "Track."

The TFT display contains everything that you may want to look at, i.e. real-time speed, real-time rpm, gear position, fuel level, trip data, and so on. It also has a good addition of a timer for riders looking forward to honing their track riding skills. You may also connect your smartphone using Bluetooth for notifications and controlling music.

One more of the great features is that traction control is also included. This is something which is almost unheard of in this segment. Though it might be an overkill in a 15 HP bike, it’s a reasonably good safety feature, especially for new riders, in the water.

All the lighting system, including the headlamp, the tail lamp, and the turn indicators, is made up of LED. This not only looks membranes but offers good visibility. The bi-functional LED projector headlight is the most impressive, which works well for night riding.

On the braking system, the YZF-R125 is no slouch. It is equipped with a large 292mm front disk and a rear disk of 220mm with both calipers being radially mounted sport performance. Standard was ABS but it also catered to new riders safers.

Variants

From Yamaha, the YZF-R125 is usually provided in a single version, however, several optional extras from the Yamaha Company are available. They include:

- Quick Shifter: This allows you to change gears without engaging the clutch for up-shifts and makes the bike sportier than before.
- Akrapovic Slip-on Exhaust: For those who like to chip in and change the exhaust note of the bike and perhaps even gain a few horses.
- Tank Pad and Tank Bag: Quite useful accessories for somebody whose main use of the bike is commuting or light touring.

I believe, for those intending to take the bike to the track or just ride with a sportier approach, quick shifters are a useful extra. However, the standard variant is great as is for its price and purpose for the majority of riders.

Market Position and Pricing

Even though it’s not officially available in India, the YZF-R125 is intended as a premium entry sports bike in those regions where it is sold. In the UK, for example, one has to pay around £5,300 (about Rs. 5.5 lacs). This makes it to the upper end of the 125 cc segments, taking into consideration its high slightly superior features and build quality.

Considering India’s scenario, if it were to be launched in the near future, we could be looking at a price range of about Rs. 1.25 lakh to Rs. 1.50 lakh, which will make it a premium option to the likes of KTM RC 125 and Yamaha R15 V4. At such a price point, it would be very competitive for those in search of a decent quality and loaded features 125CC sports bike.

Target Audience

Moreover, the YZF-R125 appears to be targeting younger aspirational motorcycle sports riders who are taking their first steps into the world of powered two-wheelers. It is especially very suitable for:

- A1 license holders in European markets who are after a sporty full-fledged motorcycle.
- People in the beginning stages of motorcycling wanting a machine that looks and feels bigger than their capacity.
- People who attend track days and are looking for an inexpensive durable base to practice riding.
- People looking for a fashionable and useful motorcycle that can be daily ridden at the office.

In the Indian context, it is suitable for college-going consumers and young professionals who want a different and premium 125cc motorcycle.

Value for Money

Regardless of the targeted segment pricing, the YZF-R125 manages to provide good value for how much it costs. The materials used and the quality of finish are of the highest order, and some of the parts would be found on motorcycles selling a lot more than this size. It is their features that include VVA, traction control, and a TFT screen that makes many others in the competitors look anomalous in that category.

For those who are new to the two-wheeled world of riding, the YZF-R125 is a perfect launching pad from which they can expand their portfolio of capabilities as the requirements place them. It is simple enough to control for the novice but possesses enough performance and maneuverability to keep the rider interested as the rider improves. This longevity, in turn, adds to its value proposition.

Mileage and Fuel Efficiency

Yamaha has stated that the YZF-R125 can attain an approximate mileage of 48 km/l, which is a good figure for this sports category 125cc bike. In actual riding conditions, many riders should seek between 40-45 km/l depending on how they ride and the conditions. This, coupled with the practical 11-liter fuel tank, means a theoretical range of more than 500km. Thus, it's suitable for city traveling as well as long journeys.

Competitors and Comparison

As far as the 125cc sport bike segment is concerned, the YZF-R125 faces stiff competition from the following 125cc motorcycles:

- KTM RC 125

: Similar results but a lot more aggressive riding stance. Not as many expensive features as the Yamaha but the price is lower than conservatives.
- Honda CBR125R: Touted to be reliable and user-friendly but lacks performance and features that the Yamaha has.
- Aprilia RS 125: Similar features and premium feel as the Yamaha but would usually cost more.
- Suzuki GSX-R125: Good in performance with good handling but few of the advanced technology.

Against these competitors, the YZF-R125 is distinguished by a combination of performance, functionality, and quality monitoring. The invigorating VVA system allows it to perform better, while the TFT screen and the traction control are features that are rare in this class.

Final Thoughts

Coming off the Yamaha YZF-R125 after quite some minutes of riding, I can say that Yamaha has come a long way. This is no ordinary beginner motorcycle, and the presumption that it is a starter bike at best is simply erroneous. It fills the void between 125cc beginner motorbikes and larger displaced sports motorcycles, offering the feel of a sportbike in a package which is not overwhelming.

The elegant design and simple riders focus achieved through the VVA and traction control features implemented make this motorcycle an outlier in the 125cc sports bike category. While some may consider this as a con due to the premium price, the YZF-R125 does call for the cost with a total package.

Parents buy bikes for their children. But the children want a bike that rides and performs the way an older bike would. For young riders beginning their growth cycle in motorcycling, the YZF-R125 should be a perfect fit. It is a bike that will build new riders' confidence and skill at the same time daintily tantalizing them with gears and performance feedback that would keep them wanting more as the riders develop the skills in time.

An advent of the probable launch of the YZF – R125 in the Indian market, there will be a lurch in the 125cc premium segments as it will provide a typical option to the likes of KTM RC 125 and might cross over with some of the 150 – 160 cc sports motorcycles. It would also appeal to quite a number of the young, aspiring motorcyclists in India who would appreciate the blend of aesthetics, technological innovation, and the performance tagged with it.

To conclude, the Yamaha YZF-R125 is more than just a learner bike – it is a fully-fledged small-capacity hybrid sports bike that performs just as a big bike would. It makes the benchmark fresh for what can be achieved in the 125cc class, and it also goes on to exhibit the fact that Yamaha is an innovative manufacturer in terms of its large motorcycle technologies to small displacement units.

Discussions and Answers Yamaha YZF R125

Is the Yamaha YZF R125 suitable for beginners?
18 September 2023 04:14

It is definitely a learner's bike there's no sort of two ways around that I think that if you're a kid you're a rider who's not learning over you kind of like a low-power fuel economy.
