KTM 1390 Super Duke R Review
Overview
With that out of the way, let’s examine KTM 1290 Super Duke R. I’m not one to say words like intense lightly, but when it comes to this bike, I’d say it’s top shelf. That’s why KTM calls it ‘The Beast,’ and honestly that name could not be more apt. This isn't just a ride: this is an adrenaline packed experience that’ll have you heart racing every time you’re on it. And if you want raw power and the edge of your seat excitement, there is no shortage of that in this Super Duke.
Engine & Performance
Underneath, there’s the powerhouse. This bike doesn’t just go, it bolts with a 1301cc V-twin engine cranking out around 177 horsepower. Each twist of the throttle is miniature of the launch sequence. From the first rev you’ll feel that bike’s intensity. It doesn’t build; it just rolls to life, daring you to choke it further. Well, honestly it’s like the engine has a personality all of its own, it’s ready to jump in and take anything on.
It’s powerful, and KTM didn’t skimp on control, and that’s the kicker. Thanks to a bunch of riding modes, you can set the bike’s personality to suit your mood. Feeling casual? Dial it down. Let’s see what the Super Duke is really capable of. Turn it up … and hang on. But trust me, it’s like having several bikes fitted together into a one. But, fair warning: this isn’t the bike I’d need to hit the grocery store, or my Sunday stroll bike. It’s built for thrill seekers.
2005: Handling & Suspension
You would think with all that power handling would be tricky. The Super Duke R is shockingly nimble for something this big, though: But that’s sort of the beauty of it. The frame is lightweight meaning that it feels like it’s ingrained to the road, reacting to every slight lean and curve. Slicing through the air, I remember taking this thing through a twisty mountain route. All of it was effortless, more or less feeling as if the bike knew where I wanted to go before I did.
The WP suspension hits that sweet spot too. It is firm when you need it, but soft enough to soak up a couple bumps, and stable enough for high speeds. It’s a feeling of control, you get this, it’s really good, it’s almost like you can just sink into that ride. Like the bike is telling you to lean a bit harder, brake a bit later. It’s shockingly smooth and confidence inspiring for such a powerful thing.
The Importance of Braking in a Trakperson Shirt
But be honest: you're going to need a lot of braking power with a bike this aggressive and KTM recognized that. Brembo Stylema brakes come standard on the Super Duke R and boy are they good. These brakes are super serious. You’d pull gently and slow down as a gentle pull, and a hard one is just like the bike grabbing onto the pavement and holding on.
The Super Duke is also braked with lean sensitive ABS and traction control, so you don’t have to guess whether pushing too hard. It’s great because I can ride it and not feel like I’m about to throw my neck out on any given corner. It is feeling like the bike is alerting me that I can have my fun and let go of the mind just on the thrill. It doesn’t make the bike foolproof, but man does it make it feel like a well thought out thrill ride.
Design & Style
Now, onto the looks. The Super Duke R is here to let everyone know, in the loudest, flashiest way possible, that it is here. The sharp angles, exposed frame, and downright aggressive design, coupled with that futuristic LED headlight make it a very aggressive design. I don’t even really need to remember to park this thing, because when I do, it’s hard not to notice the stares. When it’s standing still it looks like it would be powerful, dare you to get on it and try and tame it.
The TFT display doesn't get a shout out either. And most importantly it’s modern, clean and readable at a glance. During all those speeds you don’t want to spend your time looking for info. It's easily accessible and simple: the weather is everything you need, tweak it, monitor it, stay on top of things without a hint of missing a beat. That’s one of those small things that adds up to make the ride feel complete, made and polished.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Unrivaled Power: It’s not messing around with the 1301cc engine. It’s built to be a dominant bike.
- Responsive Handling: Massive but shockingly agile and easy to move.
- Top-Notch Safety Features: But they're still power with safety : lean-sensitive ABS, traction control.
Cons
- Not for Beginners: This bike is worthy of respect. For beginners, that’s probably too much for you to handle.
- High Fuel Consumption: It does not come cheap, that power. It’s not your fuel sipping commuter.
Who’s This Bike For?
Honestly, the KTM 1290 Super Duke R isn't the kind of bike you get to go and waste the weekends on. For people who want to enjoy every bit of the power the bike has to offer. It’s for you if you’re someone who feels like they live on the edge, that they want to be slapped every time they get on the road. That’s not just a bike, that’s an experience, that’s a thrill which won’t fade. For riders that want to be kept engaged and challenged, mile after mile.
Final Thoughts
But would I recommend the KTM 1290 Super Duke R? Yeah, but only if you’re prepared for what it might bring. It isn’t every day’s ride. It’s a thrill seeker of a machine that you need to respect and will give you pure excitement back. Super Duke R is for the type of rider who wants to feel all the adrenaline going through him each time he rides. They say that The Beast wants to eat you alive, so are you ready? Because if you are, you’re in for one unforgettable journey.
