TVS Apache RR 310 Review
Overview
It's over the 2024 TVS Apache RR 310 bike that I am feeling tingly like a young lad. The craze for this fully-faired sports bike has not died down ever since it was launched and the newer version is expected to take it even further. As a two-wheeler fan and reviewer, I was really looking forward to this moment to see how TVS has managed to develop their flagship model.
The Apache RR 310 is very dear to the Indian masses. It is not merely a sports bike, but a feather in the cap for the company’s fairness engineering capabilities, an endeavor to manufacture a global level motorcycle. Once I have taken my position in the saddle, the first thing that fascinate me was the stance of the bike. This machine is developed for headed to the track or for the streets, it seems to declare.
Design and Aesthetics
The styling of the 2024 Apache RR 310 Ex is nothing short of amazing. TVS has been able to achieve the magic of making a bike look speedy even when it’s standing at rest. The designer fairings and the tank are ‘racer chic’. All lines constructed into the corner, every angle cut exactly crafted to perfect. The bi-LED projectors provide the front look of the bike with a strong and attacking style while the LED DRL makes it stylish.
When my fingers navigate the fairing to appreciate the workmanship, they appreciate it. The finish on the painted surface is perfect, there are no orange peels or any discrepancies. The matte black on the test bike is rather quite interesting and gives a very fierce looking RR 310 among all the other models.
At least these LED tail lights do not look bulgy and gel with the design going back. The trellis frame which is bare skinned is quite sporty and displays the muscles of the motorcycle. The raised and twisted canister, although less exciting than the various added parts, still suits the general line-up and growls satisfactorily.
Once on top of the bike, I am sold on the ergonomics offered. Clip-on handlebars and rear-set footpegs allow being in a sporty riding position, still, not too aggressive. An image like the epique saddle can be endured by the user in hours sitted on the saddle. The 5 inch TFT display is relatively bright and is directly in the sun. It is worlds apart from those basic analog gauges of the earlier ages and is definitely more information beneficial.
Performance and Powertrain
The beating ground of the 2024 Apache RR 310 is its 312.2cc, cutting edge single-cylinder engine that is cooled by liquid. On paper, it develops a maximum power of 38 PS at 9700 rpm and maximum torque of 27.3 Nm at 7700 rpm. These seem very mediocre performance figures, but I am absolutely taken aback by how the engine feels when I twist the throttle.
The onset of the torque is quite linear and smooth though the mid range has a considerable punch. The motorcycles are able to make low revs easily and hence cutting through city traffic is without a problem. However, they go out and probably even surpass the intended levels on the open road and this is where the RR 310 scored. As I let it go on the highway the bikes seemed to be in a joyous mood and so was I as it was so easy to reach over and even beyond the speed limits.
The six-speed transmission has been very easy and comfortable to use with clear positive shifts and suitable ratio increments order. The slipper clutch assists well with gear changes as the rider drops a few gears in a hurry, and slips the rear wheel when stopping rapidly.
One of the particularly interesting elements of the 2024 model is the addition of the ride-by-wire throttle. It allows several riding modes: Urban, Rain, Sport, and Track. Each mode individually affects the throttle response and power delivery making the bike quite an adaptable one. In Urban mode, the power is reduced to make it easier to go through traffic while Sport and Track modes allow the engine to be used to its full potential.
I would call the suspension units comprising the telescopic forks in the front and monoshock in the rear, good mix of comfort and sport. This indeed has its own merit, it handles bumps quite well without being overly soft but makes sharp turns without the shock. The Michelin Road 5 tires are very good and they boast absolute grip on a wide range of conditions both wet and dry.
Features and Technology
No other than TVS has put in all the stunning array of features and technology in the 2024 Apache RR 310. It is factual that even when the 5 inch TFT is solely utilized as a graphics display, it also harnesses information and connectivity of the system. The Bluetooth equipped system permits pairing of smartphones and hence useful features such as turn by turn directions, missed calls and messages and voice commands are possible.
Admit it, the addition of a 6-axis IMU brings a number of sophisticated features including cornering ABS and traction control systems. Such systems operate quietly in the background adding an extra measure of safety without imposing on the rider.
The four riding modes namely Urban, Rain, Sport and Track do not only regulate the throttle response but also the levels of ABS and traction control respectively. It is an incredible system where a rider can adjust the character of the machine in accordance with his or her abilities as well as the riding conditions.
In addition, the Glide Through Technology (GTT) offers the ability to perform low speed turns with motor off without using the throttle, while the Race Tuned (RT) slipper clutch alleviates the stress of shifting down.
Variants
The 2024 Apache RR 310 is available in two variants:
Standard: Contains all the mentioned features above.
BTO (Built to Order): People can place an order to personalize the bike performance with features including adjustable coilover suspension, brass-coated drive chain and race ECU.
The standard variant in my view is very reasonable price to performance ratio as the kite comes pretty much complete for the majority of riders. However, in the BTO variant, the extra performance options will be appreciated by the lovers of the track and track days.
Market Position and Pricing
Barring the few finishes in which lower priced variants are available, an ex-showroom price of Rs. 2.75 lakh (Rs. 275,000) makes the Apache RR 310 designed to be at the upper end of the sub 400cc market for motorcycles. It costs a bit high compared to RC 390 KTM bikes and Honda CB300RR bikes, but in this case more the price encompasses features including performance which makes sense.
However, the RR 310 has one of the most sophisticated electronics packages and an all-purpose bike relative to the rest of the market. It does not stand as the trophy of the lowest price in its group and rightly so – there is some sophistication and several marketing characteristics which I expect many will aspire to.
Target Audience
The target audience of the bike is not difficult to identify and the Apache RR 310 is quite clearly aimed at buyers who are interested in owning a big bike, but do not have the money. ItFits riders member of the target group transitioning from slip ons or scoots to larger capacity machines and experienced riders looking for a nimble sports bike in everyday use.
The design and the concept of the bike is good for wide audience regardless of gender and age ranging from young working females to older bike lovers. It is track oriented which some users will like, although there is enough practicality to make it a commuter bike as well.
Value for Money
Though it comes at an elevated price, I think that money is well spent for those going for the 2024 Apache RR 310. The mix of the performance levels, features the motorcycle has and its build quality ois quite difficult to find in this segment. There is an electronics pack in it that quite a number of its rivals do not feature.
Rider satisfaction is also improved through the BTO program as riders make their bikes more personal according to their requirements and wants.
Mileage and Fuel Efficiency
From a number of my tests on the Apache RR 310, the motorcycle was able to use between 30-35 km/l of fuel after their vehicles rode in mixed conditions. This is quite decent for a sport-style 300cc motorcycle. The 11-litre fuel tank allows cruising ranges that are suitable for common work as well as extended rides.
Competitors and Comparison
The leading rivals in the category of the Apache RR 310 are the KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 300, and Honda CB300R. Each of these bikes has its own strengths and weaknesses, nevertheless, the RR 310 stands out with its unique combination of features and performance number.
At a glance, it appears that the Apache is better than the KTM RC 390 with respect to riding comfort and in built electronics. Kawasaki Ninja 300, although smooth and polished, is devoid of performance factors that the RR 310 has. The Honda CB300R is aimed at a different market with its neo-retro look.
Where the Apache RR 310 takes the cake is in its ability to perform almost any function. It can be used with equal comfort on city streets, highways and even on a race track. The ergonomic design and various riding modes as well as the electronics are all aimed at making the motorcycle usable in a variety of riding environment and rider abilities.
Conclusion
I must say, I am very very impressed and shocked at that much time spent with the 2024 TVS Apache RR 310. This is a bike that is often found in more powerful motorcycles, yes there are a number of factors is performance level, features as well as finish and equipment.
There’s a good engine, electronics and bike ergonomics, and as such this is a versatile machine that can be used in a variety of riding situations. Commuting in busy rush hour traffic, battling it out on weekends, or even going aggressive on the racetracks, the RR 310 has a provision for all.
In its segment, it is probably not the cheapest one available but the rationale is justified. In fact, it’s hard to find such a level of technology and features for the price offered, let alone the quality of the construction.
Coming back as a reviewer, I must say that the 2024 TVS Apache RR 310 is a masterpiece from TVS, the company designers managed to develop this bike and I hope that it won’t be the only one. It is in this category that the Apache RR 310 comes and will instantly answer the prayers of those who are looking for a premium, fully loaded sports bike in the 300 cc segment.
