Yamaha YZF-R3 (Old Model)

About
The Yamaha YZF-R3 is a sports bike that stands out with its 321cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine, producing 41.4 bhp at 10,750 rpm and 29.6 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm. This engine, coupled with a 6-speed gearbox, allows the bike to reach speeds in excess of 180 kmph and accelerate from 0-100 kmph in under 6 seconds. The bike features a diamond-type frame, dual-channel ABS, and a suspension setup that is both comfortable and capable of handling rough roads. The design, though slightly outdated, retains a sporty appeal with features like LED lighting and fairing panels. The riding position is accessible and comfortable, making it a great option for both beginners and experienced riders looking for a balance between performance and everyday usability. Overall, the R3 offers a well-rounded package of performance, comfort, and reliability, making it a strong contender in the middleweight sports bike segment.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Yamaha YZF-R3, even in its older model, is a compelling package for those seeking a reliable and performance-oriented sports bike. While its design may seem slightly dated compared to newer models, it still exudes a sporty and youthful vibe that is hard to ignore. The bikes 321cc parallel-twin engine is a highlight, offering smooth refinement and a rev-happy nature that makes it a joy to ride. The handling is impeccable, with a 5050 weight distribution and a forgiving riding posture, making it suitable for both city commuting and spirited rides. However, the lack of advanced features such as traction control, cornering ABS, and a TFT display might make it seem less competitive against its rivals. Despite this, the R3s simplicity and reliability make it a solid choice for those who prioritize performance and comfort over cutting-edge technology.
Price
The older model of the Yamaha YZF-R3 was priced at Rs 3.52 lakh (ex-showroom) before it was discontinued. When considering the on-road price, you would need to add costs such as registration, insurance, and other local taxes, which could push the total cost to around Rs 4.2 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh, depending on the state and local regulations. This pricing positioned the R3 competitively within the entry-level middleweight bike segment, although it was still on the higher side compared to some of its competitors. The value for money lies in its robust build quality, reliable engine, and overall riding experience, which justifies the premium pricing to some extent.
Latest Updates
Saturday, 12 October 2024 07:47 AM The updated 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 is expected to launch in India soon, bringing significant design improvements, including a new MotoGP-inspired front design with a single projector headlight and LED DRLs. The bike also features a slip-assist clutch, an optional quick-shifter, and a new LCD screen with Bluetooth and USB charger. I think these updates will make the R3 more appealing to Indian buyers.
Friday, 11 October 2024 10:56 PM The current Yamaha R3 in India, sold via the CBU route, is priced at Rs. 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom). The new model is expected to retain a similar or slightly higher price tag, making it a competitive option in the market. I believe the pricing will be crucial in determining its success.
Friday, 11 October 2024 06:59 AM Yamaha has revamped the design of the 2025 YZF-R3, moving away from the old split headlight setup to a single projector headlight with dual LED DRLs and a MotoGP-style air intake. The side and rear fairings have also been redesigned for a sportier look. This new design aligns the R3 with other Yamaha sportbikes.
Thursday, 10 October 2024 02:20 PM The 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 introduces several new features, including a slip-and-assist clutch and an optional quick-shifter, although the quick-shifter only works on upshifts due to the cable-operated throttle. The bike also gets a new LCD instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and a USB-A Type port. I think these features will enhance the riding experience significantly.
Friday, 11 October 2024 12:47 AM Despite the new design and features, the 2025 Yamaha YZF-R3 retains the same 321cc twin-cylinder engine producing 42 hp and 29.5 Nm of torque. The engine remains Euro 5+ compliant, but there are no significant performance upgrades. I believe this might be a letdown for some performance enthusiasts.
Monday, 22 July 2024 10:11 AM The older Yamaha R3 in India had a semi-digital instrument cluster, but the new model comes with a fully digital LCD console that includes Bluetooth connectivity. However, it still lacks a TFT display, which is common in many of its competitors. I think this is a step in the right direction but still a bit behind the times.
Monday, 22 July 2024 10:59 PM The Yamaha R3, imported to India as a CBU, is priced at Rs. 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom), making it more expensive than some of its competitors like the Aprilia RS 457 and KTM RC 390. This pricing could be a challenge for its market appeal. I believe Yamaha needs to reconsider the pricing strategy.
Monday, 22 July 2024 12:49 PM The older Yamaha R3 had a more dated design compared to its international counterparts, but it still had a unique appeal with its fairing panels, engine cowl, and sleek rear end. The bikes design was in line with Yamahas overall design philosophy, even if it wasnt as striking as its elder siblings.
Monday, 22 July 2024 10:26 AM The Yamaha R3s 321cc parallel-twin engine produces 41 bhp and 29.5 Nm of torque, making it a rev-happy engine with some lag at the bottom end. The bike features a 6-speed gearbox and dual-channel ABS, but lacks electronic aids like a slipper clutch or quickshifter in the older model. I think the engine performance is accessible and exciting.
Tuesday, 23 July 2024 01:23 AM The older Yamaha R3 had all LED lighting, which was a positive aspect, but it lacked advanced features compared to its rivals. The bikes simplicity was both a charm and a drawback, as it felt uncomplicated but also less equipped. I believe this simplicity had its own appeal for some riders.
Mileage
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 01:48 PM The Yamaha YZF-R3 is known for its decent fuel efficiency, especially when driven sanely. Users have reported mileage figures around 23-25 kmpl, which is respectable for a sports bike in this segment. This makes it a viable option for daily commuting as well as occasional long rides, keeping running costs relatively manageable. However, aggressive riding can lower the mileage, so its important to maintain a balanced riding style to get the best out of it.

Yamaha YZF-R3 (Old Model) Review

21 Dec, 2021 10:28 AM

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

2018 Yamaha R3 none other than KTM RC390, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Benelli 302R in entry-level middleweight bike segment. Yamaha had once discontinued the model as it was BS3 compliant but the version launched in 2018 is BS4 compliant and also carries AHO as per government instructions. Yamaha uses a powerful 321cc, twin cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected engine producing 41.4 BHP at 10,750 rpm and 29.6 Nm at 9,000 rpm. It gets clear benefits of its lightweight body. The 6-speed gearbox helps Yamaha R3 reach speeds in excess of 180 kmph while 0-100 kmph comes in under 6 seconds. The motorcycle comes with a class-leading design but loses in headlight department with halogen bulbs in use.

Benelli 302R offers LED twin lights and Yamaha may also use the same in the next version of R3. As R1, R6 and R15 are using the same wind laden rear design, it is most probably true that Yamaha would design R3 in coming years to offer the same design language as well as fully digital instrument console. A slipper clutch is also missing from R3 presently. It carries 14 litres of fuel and comes with dual channel ABS as standard. This makes it the most worthy contender in twin cylinder segment while KTM RC390 is still tough to beat for its value for money pricing. Seat height on Yamaha R3 is also opposite of all other R series bikes as they have higher than usual seats while this one offers 780mm. It can be bought in Magma Black and Racing Blue shade in India. Yamaha R3 measures 2090 mm in length, 720mm in width and 1135 mm in height. The wheelbase measures 1380 mm.

A Silent Assassin.

Have been riding it for about 900 km till now, it's really very comfortable & not very demanding bike, has enough grunt to keep up with bigger bikes. I call it silent assassin since the stock exhaust is not loud but give it some gas & exhaust roars with a throaty growl, absolutely love the way how it changes from purring kitten to a roaring tiger with the twist of the wrist. Through is on a bit expensive side compared to other bikes in the same class. Fuel economy has been around 23kmpl.

Best Features: Engine refinement.

Pros: Silk smooth motor, very nimble, very good build quality, comfortable riding position & good heat management.

Cons: Halogen headlight.
