Our take on this /// Verdict
The KTM 390 SMC R is a highly specialized and exciting addition to the Indian motorcycle market. This supermoto bike is designed for those who crave the thrill of off-road and on-road agility. With its lean and purposeful design, the 390 SMC R stands out for its tall stance, dirt-bike styling, and a significantly lighter weight compared to the 390 Duke. The bikes engine, borrowed from the 390 Duke, delivers impressive power and torque, making it perfect for both urban and off-road adventures. However, the high seat height of 860 mm might be a challenge for some riders. Overall, the 390 SMC R is a niche product that will appeal to enthusiasts who are looking for a unique riding experience, but it may not be the best fit for everyday commuting due to its specialized nature.
Price
The KTM 390 SMC R is expected to be priced at a premium over the 390 Duke, which currently stands at 3.14 lakh ex-showroom. Given the specialized features and the supermoto design, we can anticipate the 390 SMC R to be priced around 3.5 lakh to 3.7 lakh ex-showroom. On-road prices will vary depending on the state and local taxes, but you can expect to add another 50,000 to 70,000 to the ex-showroom price, bringing the total to around 4 lakh to 4.4 lakh on-road. This pricing reflects the bikes high-performance capabilities and unique features, making it a worthwhile investment for serious enthusiasts.

Latest Updates
Friday, 20 December 2024 05:23 PM The KTM 390 SMC R has been spotted testing in India, confirming its potential launch in the country. The bike features 17-inch wire-spoke wheels and is based on the KTM 390 Adventure S and Enduro R. It is expected to use the same 399cc liquid-cooled engine as the 390 Duke, producing 45hp and 39Nm of peak torque. I think this supermoto could be a game-changer for Indian roads with its long-travel suspension setup.
Friday, 15 November 2024 04:29 AM KTM showcased the 390 SMC R at EICMA 2024, and there are indications that it might be launched in India after the 390 Adventure range. The bike is expected to be the first sub-500cc locally manufactured supermoto in India, filling a gap in the market. It will likely be positioned between the 390 Duke and the 390 Adventure R in terms of pricing. I believe this could attract a new segment of riders looking for a versatile bike.
Sunday, 10 November 2024 03:07 AM The KTM 390 SMC R is anticipated to feature a modified final drive ratio to suit its supermoto purpose, although the exact state of tune of the motor has not been disclosed. The bike will come with a 6-speed gearbox and is expected to have an upright rider’s triangle, typical of supermotos. This setup should make it highly maneuverable on Indian roads.
Friday, 25 October 2024 02:23 PM KTM is cautious about launching the 390 SMC R in India due to the underdeveloped supermoto market in the country. The company plans to gauge market response before making a final decision on the launch. If successful, it could pave the way for more supermoto models in the Indian market. I think this cautious approach is wise given the niche nature of supermotos.
Friday, 20 September 2024 02:04 AM The KTM 390 SMC R uses the same 399cc, liquid-cooled motor as the 390 Duke, which produces 45.3bhp and 39Nm of peak torque. This engine, paired with a 6-speed gearbox, should provide ample power for both on-road and off-road adventures. The bike also features stickier rubber to enhance its supermoto capabilities.
Thursday, 15 August 2024 05:26 AM The design of the KTM 390 SMC R includes a flat motocross-style seat and a long-travel suspension setup, which is ideal for tackling rough Indian roads. The bike’s styling is expected to be similar to what was showcased at EICMA 2024, with a focus on practicality and performance. I think the design will appeal to riders who need a versatile bike.
Wednesday, 10 July 2024 01:14 AM The KTM 390 SMC R is expected to be priced between the 390 Duke and the 390 Adventure R, making it an attractive option for those looking for a bike that can handle both city roads and off-road terrain. The exact pricing will be revealed closer to the launch date.
Thursday, 20 June 2024 05:40 AM KTM has been considering the Indian market for the 390 SMC R, recognizing the potential for supermotos in the country. While there is no official launch date, the bike’s appearance at EICMA 2024 and subsequent testing in India suggest a launch is on the horizon. I believe this could be a smart move by KTM to diversify its offerings.
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 02:20 PM The KTM 390 SMC R features 17-inch wheels wrapped in stickier rubber, which is designed to provide better grip on various road surfaces. This, combined with its long-travel suspension, makes it an excellent choice for riders who encounter diverse road conditions.
Wednesday, 10 April 2024 11:34 AM The supermoto segment in India is relatively unexplored, and the KTM 390 SMC R could be the first sub-500cc locally manufactured supermoto to enter this market. This could open up new opportunities for KTM and other manufacturers to tap into this niche market. I think this is an exciting development for Indian bikers.
Mileage
Friday, 17 January 2025 06:30 AM When it comes to mileage, the KTM 390 SMC R, like its 390 Duke counterpart, is not designed for fuel efficiency but for performance. You can expect a mileage of around 25-30 kmpl in mixed riding conditions, which is reasonable given the bikes powerful engine and supermoto design. While this may not be the best for long-distance touring or daily commuting, it is acceptable for a bike that prioritizes power and agility over fuel economy.

Discussions and Questions KTM 390 SMC R

Is the KTM 390 SMC R actually good for beginners to learn stunts and supermoto techniques?
23 January 2025 11:44
The real problem is that it’s probably too easy to stunt on. The bike is so capable, you could develop bad habits. If you start on something slower, you can build the skills properly.
Will the KTM 390 SMC R work for taller/heavier riders?
23 January 2025 11:44
It's all about technique. A small bike can dance, if a skilled bigger rider can make it do that. And the SMC R has adjustable suspension, which you can dial in.
How much of a headache is maintenance on the KTM 390 SMC R?
23 January 2025 11:44
It's all relative. It’s gonna be a piece of cake to maintain compared to a dirt bike. It's going to be a bit more work than a Ninja 400. Depends on your perspective.
Is the KTM 390 SMC R too much of a bike for a beginner rider?
23 January 2025 11:44
It depends on the rider. If you're mature and make it easy in the beginning, you could totally learn on this. Stay away if you’re gonna be an idiot with the throttle though.
Will the KTM 390 SMC R actually be practical to use every day?
23 January 2025 11:44
It's all about priorities. If you don’t care about having storage, comfort or being able to sit, it could work. For most people, a Duke would be more practical, but for me it would be the Duke, for sure.
