BMW K1300R Review

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

BMW K1300R is a naked bike that was launched by the German automaker in 2008 and was discontinued after 2015. BMW introduced the K1300R to replace the existing K1200R and was quite successful in doing so.

Many considered the K1300R a muscle bike that prioritised maximum power output and fast acceleration. In tests carried out by Bike Magazine in the UK, it achieved 0 to 100 KMPH in just 2.81 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating naked motorcycle. On 20 December 2013, a modified version of the BMW K1300R was featured in the Bollywood movie Dhoom 3 and was driven by Aamir Khan.

BMW K1300R featured a bridge-type frame with cast aluminium and load-bearing engine, a conventional indicator switch instead of a usual BMW 3-button configuration, a new hexagonal tube with a catalytic converter, a superb exhaust valve, standard ABS, an automatic shift function, a sporty MotoGP-style 2D dashboard, stylish front dual headlights and tail light, black and split grab rail, neatly designed fuel tank, black rearview mirrors, nice front fender, nicely positioned foot pegs and handlebar, clear lens indicators, 17-inch cast-aluminium alloy wheels with tubeless radial tires and the optional ESA II system and ASC traction control.

Dimensions of the K1300R were as follows; length - 2228mm, width - 856mm (mirrors included) and height - 1095mm, seat height - 790mm which can be increased up to 820mm. It had an extensive wheelbase of 1585mm for a stable ride along with a front and rear suspension travel of 115mm and 135mm respectively and an inner leg curve of 1750mm which can further be increased up to 1810mm by including the accessories. It carried a fuel tank of 19-litres capacity with roughly 4 litres of the reserve.

Ricardo plc modified the engine to a powerful 1293cc, 4-stroke, in-line 4-cylinders, 16-valves DOHC, water-cooled engine with a maximum power of 173 hp at 9,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 140 Nm at 8,250 rpm. They mated it with a constant-mesh 6-speed gearbox transmission via a shaft drive, 1-down and 5-up shift pattern. It came with a hydraulic-driven multiple-disc clutch in the oil bath, EU3 emission compliant closed-loop 3-way catalytic converter and an electronic intake pipe injection with digital engine management including a knock sensor(BMS-K+). The top speed was recorded at almost 266 KMPH and reached the 0-100 kmph mark in just 2.81 seconds with excellent fuel consumption figures.

The urban muscle had 320mm diameter dual floating disk brakes with 4-piston fixed callipers at the front and 265mm diameter single disk with 2-piston floating callipers at the rear. The suspension duties are handled by BMW Motorrad Duo lever with a central spring strut at the front and a cast aluminium single-sided swing-arm with BMW Motorrad Para lever and a central spring strut, lever system with hydraulically adjustable (continuously variable) spring pre-load at handwheel and adjustable rebound damping at the rear.

The BMW K1300R was available in 2 variants, namely K1300R and K1300S (R denotes Roadster and S denotes Sport). Price of the bike at the time of its discontinuation was around Rs 25.09 lakh in India and was offered in two colour options Racing Red and Sapphire Black Metallic.

The BMW K 1300R is a great bike for those who are looking for an aggressive and powerful ride. With its 0-100km/h time of 2.9 seconds and 0-200km/h time of 7.9 seconds, it's no surprise that this bike is a force to be reckoned with. The optional gearshift assistant is a great addition, as it cuts the engine momentarily when a shift is completed. This is a great feature that helps to make the shifting smooth and seamless.

The squat of the rear suspension helps to keep the front wheel down to a manageable level and contributes to the bike's incredible acceleration. Overall, the BMW K 1300R is an outstanding bike that is sure to please any rider looking for a powerful, aggressive ride.

Definitely a great choice if you are looking for a super bike

Nirati Srivastava | One year ago

BMW K 1300R is definitely a great choice if you are looking for a super bike. It is equipped with a powerful engine that gives it a powerful roar on the road. If you are looking for a good mileage, then you may be disappointed as it does consume more fuel than normal bikes. However, it is comfortable to ride, thanks to the shock absorbers. It is a bit heavier and may be hard to handle for some.

But it has a strong grip on the road. In terms of looks, it has a classy and sleek look that will make heads turn. If you have a heavy pocket, then go ahead and buy it. Make sure to rate it, if you like it.

After much deliberation, I have decided to go for the 2017 S1000R & RR. I'm sure this bike will give me the perfect balance of power and agility. It also has the added bonus of being on a run out clearance and being the most affordable option. I can't wait to take it for a spin next Saturday. I just hope I don't fall in love with the RR as it is the more expensive option. Only time will tell!

The bike looks so good, it's a shame that BMW discontinued it. It was a great bike, with excellent performance and a sleek design. It was a great piece of engineering that will be sorely missed.

This bike's engine is bigger in displacement than many car engines, and it can produce more power and torque than many smaller cars.
