Bajaj Chetak 4-Stroke

About
The Bajaj Chetak 4-stroke is a vintage scooter that was highly popular in India during the 90s. It features a 145cc single-cylinder 4-stroke engine, which was a significant upgrade from the earlier 2-stroke models in terms of fuel efficiency and reliability. The scooter is known for its classic design, solid build quality, and comfortable ride. It was one of the most affordable and reliable options for middle-class families at the time, making it a common sight on Indian roads. The Chetak comes with a manual transmission and has a top speed of around 80-90 kmh, which is modest but sufficient for urban commuting. Despite its age, the Chetak still holds a special place in the hearts of many scooter enthusiasts for its nostalgic value and dependable performance. However, its lack of modern features and the challenges in finding spare parts make it less appealing for those seeking a contemporary riding experience.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Bajaj Chetak 4-stroke, a model that was popular in the 90s, leaves a mixed impression. On the positive side, it is known for its classic look and feel, which many still appreciate for its nostalgic value. The build quality and fit and finish of the Chetak were commendable for its time, making it a reliable choice for middle-class families. However, it has several drawbacks, particularly in terms of performance. The 4-stroke engine, while more fuel-efficient than its 2-stroke counterparts, is notably sluggish and lacks the zippy feel that many scooter enthusiasts crave. Additionally, the quality control issues and the scarcity of spare parts, especially after Bajaj discontinued the model, make it a less appealing option for those seeking long-term reliability. Overall, while the Chetak has its charm, it is not the best choice for those looking for a powerful and modern scooter.
Price
The Bajaj Chetak 4-stroke is no longer a new vehicle in the market, and as such, it is not available for purchase at ex-showroom or on-road prices from authorized dealers. However, if you are considering buying a used Chetak, prices can vary widely depending on the condition, mileage, and location. Typically, a well-maintained used Chetak from the 90s could cost anywhere between 20,000 to 50,000. This price range reflects the vehicles age, condition, and the fact that it is no longer supported by the manufacturer with new parts or service. When purchasing a used Chetak, it is crucial to inspect the vehicle thoroughly and consider the potential costs of maintenance and repairs.
Mileage
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 11:11 PM The mileage of the Bajaj Chetak 4-stroke is relatively good for its era, with an average fuel efficiency of around 40-50 kml. This makes it a decent choice for short to medium-distance commutes. However, the actual mileage can vary based on riding conditions, maintenance of the vehicle, and the riders habits. Given its fuel efficiency, the Chetak can be a cost-effective option for daily use, but it may not be the best choice for long-distance travel due to its limited power and speed.

With a 125 cc engine at its heart, the scooter has ensured success in the market for decades. Though the brand has discontinued its production, the Bajaj Chetak 4-Stroke competes in the market with LML Vespa which is now offered by Piaggio.

Powering the Bajaj Chetak is a 125cc, Forced Air Cooled, 4-stroke engine capable of producing a maximum power of 8.0 BHP @ 6500 rpm and an utmost torque of 9.4 NM @ 5000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 4-speed gearbox. the suspension duties are handled by Variable rate coil spring & double acting Shock Absorber with an Anti-dive link at the front and a Variable rate coil spring & double acting Shock Absorber at the back. The Bajaj Chetak 4-stroke gets a 130 mm drum brakes at the front while at the rear, it gets 150 mm drum brakes. The scooter was originally developed with the inspiration from the Italian Vespa Sprint. It was available in different models such a single seat and a split seat one. The scooter can also hold onto a spare tyre (stepny) which also acts as a good backrest for the pillion rider.

The claimed top speed of the scooter is 85 kmpl and it gives a mileage of 45 kmpl with a fuel tank capacity of 4.5 litres. The scooter is known to be family friendly offering a worthy mileage, larger boot space at the front and being an affordable option as a commuter. Since the market changed accordingly and more people started to opt for bikes and cars, the production of the scooter was cut short in 2005 because of no demand.

The pickup on the Bajaj Chetak is great, making it a comfortable ride even in bumper to bumper traffic. The brakes are good and responsive and it can easily handle the slanting ramps on the roads. With two people on the scooter, it could easily handle the slanting ramp with no issues. Overall, it is a great scooter to drive and enjoy.

It is a very good two wheeler available in market. I have my own and I love. Only thing it requires is the up-gradation through a franchise workshop of Bajaj. Many customers like me are expecting for re-launch.
