USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Yamaha SZ-S, although it has been discontinued, leaves a lasting impression as a reliable and practical commuter bike. From my perspective, this bike excels in its comfort and performance, making it a great option for daily commuting in city traffic. The bikes design, while not the most stylish, is functional and durable. User reviews highlight its great mileage, impressive pick-up, and budget-friendly nature. However, the lack of advanced features like fuel injection and ABS in some variants might be a drawback for some buyers. Overall, if you are looking for a no-frills, dependable commuter bike, the SZ-S would have been a solid choice, but its discontinuation means you might need to consider other options in the market.
Price
The Yamaha SZ-S was priced competitively in the Indian market before its discontinuation. The ex-showroom price for the SZ-S Version 2.0 was around Rs 65,300. When considering the on-road price, you would need to add costs such as registration, insurance, and other local taxes, which could push the price up to around Rs 75,000 to Rs 80,000, depending on the state and city. This pricing made it an attractive option for those seeking a budget-friendly commuter bike with decent performance and features. However, with the bike no longer in production, these prices are more of a historical reference.
Mileage
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 04:08 PM The Yamaha SZ-S is known for its efficient fuel consumption, which is a crucial factor for many Indian buyers. The bike offers a mileage of around 40-50 kmpl, depending on riding conditions and maintenance. This makes it an economical choice for daily commuting, especially in urban areas where traffic can be dense. The good mileage helps in keeping the running costs low, which is a significant advantage for those who prioritize fuel efficiency.

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

Yamaha SZ-S is the newest commuter variant launched by Yamaha along with SZ-RR and Yamaha Ray recently. It has the same engine as FZ series of Yamaha and expects to create the same magic as created by the latter. Yamaha launched earlier the SZ version but it didn't quite match their expectations so now they have launched two new versions of it with some modifications, SZ-S and SZ-RR. Let's see what makes Yamaha SZ-S better than its competitors.

The exterior of Yamaha SZ-S gives a stylish and robust look with its halogen bulb headlamp, rear view mirrors, clear lens indicators, aluminium grab handles, smoked visor, stylish cowl, large size front fender, a pass light, a windscreen, strong and crack resistant PP (Polypropylene) side covers, stylish dual tail lights, full plastic chain case, large capacity 14L fuel tank with the hinged cap, wide and comfortable seat, body graphics on sides, stylish silencer and 17-inch five spoke alloy wheels. amaha SZ-S has a beautiful instrument console with an analogue fuel gauge, tachometer and speedometer and a low fuel indicator with some other indicators.

Yamaha SZ-S has a length of 2050mm, width of 750mm and height of 1100mm as its dimension and has a seat height of 802mm along with the good wheelbase of 1320mm and good ground clearance of 165mm. It has a kerb weight of 133kgs and engine oil volume of 1.2L. The engine of Yamaha SZ-S is a powerful 153cc, Air-cooled, four-stroke, single cylinder, two valve, SOHC with a maximum power of 12 bhp at 7500 rpm and a maximum torque of 12.8 Nm at 4500 rpm and is mated with a constant mesh five speed gearbox transmission with one gear down and rest gears up-shift pattern. It has a top speed of 105 kmph with the bore and stroke of 58mm and 57.9mm respectively, compression ratio of 9.5:1, wet sump lubrication, wet multi-plate disk type clutch, C.D.I ignition system, BS26 carburettor as fuel supply, a 12V and 5Ah battery, diamond type frame and the mileage of 50kmpl in the cities and 65kmpl on the highways and reaches 0-60kmph mark in just 5.9 seconds.

Yamaha SZ-S is a very comfortable commuter with a large and wide seat to give fatigue free long rides for rider and pillion, raised handle bar at good position with proper grip, footrests at proper positions and rear view mirrors. It also has a disc brake at front and a drum brake at rear. The suspension system is a telescopic type at front and swing arm type at rear. It is both electric as well as kick start. Also, it has an A.I. System and a large capacity muffler with catalyser for cleaner exhaust.

Yamaha SZ-S is a variant of Yamaha SZ along with SZ-RR and is available in two beautiful shades of Quality Black and Quality Red. It has a price of INR 59,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and may vary in other states minutely. Overall, this commuter stands out from others of its segments with its great and stylish looks, superb engine performance, great fuel efficiency, good and comfortable ride and good price.

Bad buying experience with my Yamaha SZ

Divya Gupta | 2 years ago

I had a bad buying experience with my Yamaha SZ. I ordered a certain color, but did not receive it and had to be forgiven by the dealer. The riding experience on the SZ R was ok on straight roads, but even worse on hilly roads. The initial pickup was good, but after that it felt like riding an old bull cart. Once we reached top gear 5th, it felt like a panther. In India, we cannot ride for more than 15 minutes in top gear unless we are travelling on a national highway. The looks of the bike were average, but the performance was good and the silencer had a great sound.

The mileage was terrible - 50 to drop off 25 kmpl in one year. The service from Yamaha was ok, but the parts were expensive and we had to argue a lot to get the warranty of one year. The pros of the bike were the low price, sporty look, and light weight. The cons were very bad mileage, less power, and higher maintenance.

Say NO to Yamaha SZ

Charu Garg | 2 years ago

When I bought my new Yamaha SZ, I was initially happy with my purchase. Initially, the ride quality was good and I had no problems. However, after a few thousand kilometers, I started to experience some issues with the engine. It became increasingly noisy, and I had to change the carburetor at 10000 km. Even after getting the service done on time, the service center technician was unable to identify the problems. The mechanics were inexperienced and could not provide a proper diagnosis. This was not the experience I expected from a Yamaha product. I will never buy a Yamaha again.

Doesn't have a kick start and the headlight is not powerful

Gazal Singla | 2 years ago

I bought the Yamaha SZ-R in December 2011 and I was very pleased with its sporty look. I was especially impressed with the comfort of the ride and the overall riding experience is quite remarkable. The bike's performance is good and I have taken many long rides since purchasing it. I have gone from Kalyan to Ratnagiri (about 800 kms), Kalyan to Mahabaleshwar (about 700 kms), and Kalyan to Nashik-Shirdi (about 700 kms) and I have driven all of these distances without any problems. My previous bike caused me back pain, so I have found the SZ-R to be a great relief in that respect. My daily travel is about 20 kilometers and I'm getting an average mileage of 40-45 kilometers in the city and 45-50 kilometers for long-distance rides.

The only downsides of the bike is that it doesn't have a kick start and the headlight is not as powerful as I would like. The battery also got damaged after 18 months, but I replaced it with an Exide battery and it has worked well since then. After 5 years, the bike has started to give some problems, with both the front and rear suspension getting damaged and the tyres losing their shape and grip. I changed them with Ceat tyres and since then there have been no punctures. Compared to other bikes of the same period, I think my Yamaha SZ-R

An average bike

Riding is fine as far as you do not go beyond 80kmph. The bike is able to reach 115kmph without a pillion crouched down. But at that point you will feel how hard the bike struggles to maintain the speed. Untill 80 kmph the bike is able to hold speeds for long commutes. You will feel that the bike lacks a 6th gear on the highway. I haven't tested the mileage but i believe it returns about 45-50 kmpl.

The downside is that there is no kill-switch. It even lacks a pass light.

I have faced the issue of the speedometer cable getting ripped every 500 km I drove. Replacing it is a waste of time and you won't be able to keep the correct odometer reading.

Not a wise decision to purchase the Yamaha SZ

Deepak Kumar | 2 years ago

After reading this review, it is clear that the Yamaha SZ is not a good buy. The user has experienced several issues with the bike in the two years that they have owned it, including having to replace the meter wire, clutch cable, and accelerator cable multiple times. The user has also reported that the mileage is very low and that the chain sprocket is giving them problems. Additionally, they have indicated that the exchange amount offered is too low. Overall, based on this review, it is not a wise decision to purchase the Yamaha SZ .
