TVS Flame DS125 Review
Quick Review by Maxabout Team
Overcoming a technology infringement case from Bajaj Auto, TVS Motors has re-launched the much awaited 'Flame' with Twin Spark Plug technology after obtaining all necessary permissions and clearances in accordance with law. This executive segment bike has been launched as TVS Flame DS125 and it is propelled by 3 valve CC-VTi technology, fired by twin spark plugs. Developed with AVL Austria, this 125 cc three valve engine is tuned to the ideal swirl-tumble port combination so that it delivers superior performance while simultaneously enhancing low, mid-range power and delivering high fuel efficiency. With this advanced technology, TVS hopes for better results this time.
Design and Style
This new variant is not new in terms of appearance. The bike shares its each and every panel with SR variant. It follows the all black theme with black colored alloys, engine, silencer, side covers and rear grab rail. Rear view mirrors are very similar to the one used in its elder sibling, Apache. It is partly black colored front fender gets some extensions just above its forks which makes it look macho with its well-built alloy wheels. The naked cowl with tinted visor is a unique characteristic of this bike which adds flare to this bike with its full size headlight. The tank extensions and body colored under cowl are some of the premium features of this bike. It sports aerodynamic graphics on its fuel tank which makes it look sporty with integrated indicators. Its muffler features a black heat shield which gels up well with its black colored rear shock absorbers. TVS has chrome finished the triangular tip of its muffler which looks cool when seen from the back. Similar to other body parts, its full size tail light and rear side indicators are also triangular in shape. Its rear fender carries the number plate and light reflector.
Instrument Console
The instrument console TVS Flame DS125 houses a big circular dial for its analogue speedometer while it also features a yellow colored LCD. The bike has digital odometer, trip meter, fuel gauge and clock. There are also some premium features like mileage indicator and service reminder but it lacks a Tachometer. Other LED indicators can also be seen in this instrument console.
Engine and Gearbox
TVS has made noticeable changes in this department. The 125cc CC-VTi engine now breathes via 3 valve and Dual spark plug. This engine produces a torque output of 10 Nm which arrives at 6000 rpm while its maximum power output of 10.3 bhp can be used at 7500 rpm. This 4-stroke, air-cooled engine is mated with a four-speed manual gearbox which has all gears down shift pattern.
Acceleration and Performance
This re-tuned engine feels much better than before. With addition of an extra spark plug, the bike has become more responsive and enthusiastic. This variant does 0-60km/hr in less than 6 seconds which is slightly better than its regular variant. The low and mid-range of this engine has become more powerful which avoids frequent gear shifts. The throttle response has also improved considerably. However we still feel things would have been much better if it had a fifth gear as on highways, the bike still lacks the high speed grunt. The gearbox feels lighter and smoother. The bike doesn’t vibrate much at high speeds as this variant can even go pass the top speed of 105km/hr. The power delivery feels much linear and constant than before. TVS has also worked on the refinement level of this engine. They have reduced the harshness of this engine and that’s quite evident when you rev this bike hard. It feels less strained if you compare it to the single spark variant. The gear ratios are still taller but feels well matched after initial phase.
Mileage
This variant is more fuel efficient than the regular Flame. The bike may return you a mileage of around 65-68km/ltr in city conditions while these figures tends to increase by 5-10km/ltr on highways.
Comfort while Driving
This bike has always been very comfortable with well positioned foot-pegs and handle bar. Its foot pegs are placed just below your thighs which feel quite relaxing in city traffic. Its wide seat also offers nice under thigh support which gets better with a perfect hold of its tank with your knees. You can easily reach to its handle bar which also offers a firm palm grip. The bike offers a stress free riding posture.
Storage Space and Safety Features
TVS has smartly placed a lockable storage space just above its fuel tank of Flame DS125 which can even house a full size-water bottle. The bike also has some under seat storage space. Flame DS125 has a powerful halogen headlight which gives you clear vision at night and also comes with other safety features like rear saree guard and front leg guard.
Suspension and Braking
The bike shares its suspension system with its SR variant. TVS has equipped this bike with telescopic oil damped forks at its front and hydraulic shock absorbers at the back which are 5-step adjustable. Flame DS 125 comes with standard front disc brake of 240mm while it has a drum brake of 130mm at its back.
Ride and Handling
With new and secure braking system, there is certain improvement in the ride quality of this bike. The bike feels under control even at high speeds and sharp corners. The suspension system is still on the soft side which means you will be bothered by some potholes and speed breakers. However with its long wheelbase (1320mm) and high ground clearance (165mm), you will enjoy rides on highways where it has commendable ground stability. Even in city, things are quite impressive with its light handling which helps you to steer this bike easily through tight spaces. Its tyre also offers a nice grip of road which is quite effective while taking sharp corners.
Tyre Size, Shades and Variants
It has six-spoke 17 inch alloy wheels. Its single variant is available in three different shades.
Verdict
TVS Flame DS125 is priced at INR 51.7(ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). This is surely a well-tuned and refined bike which is also quite rich in terms of looks and features. Ride and handling is also not a major concern but what about its poor reputation. Moreover, TVS has priced it very close to Bajaj Discover150 which is a far more powerful and trusted brand than this bike. We don’t expect improved results for this bike as we still doubt its worthiness.
