Yamaha R15 V1 Review

21 Dec, 2021 03:42 PM

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

Yamaha introduced the pure lightweight sports bike experience through its R15 in India. The feel is so different that no other bike can even be compared to this R series DNA and from its launch date to the present time, it is simply unbeatable. The first generation of R15 was the most loved version of the sports bike, balancing the practicality and performance on a single platform. YZF-R15, as the company named it, is a 149.8 cc, 1-cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected machine producing 16.8 BHP @ 8500 rpm and 15 NM @ 7500 rpm. At its time of launch, 150 cc machines were supposed to produce 12-13 BHP and fuel injection was a dream for Indian bikes. The bike came with a 6-speed transmission, which too was a fascination with an Indian made bike till that time.

The R15 version 1.0 comes with a fully faired design and uses a twin headlight structure at the front. It is one of the best looking designs in India and this tag is carried with it even in its current generation. It gets a perfect aerodynamic design with a single, long seat for the comfortable 2-person ride. The rear end gets a stretched mudguard and it comes in eye-catching bright as well as dark and mature shades. The semi-digital instrument console can be considered as the best of its time and the first generation of R15 was a true example of 'India first' engineering by Yamaha. Yamaha retails the second generation named R15 version 2.0 for its lightweight sports bike category.

The R15 V2 gets split seats, new exhaust system and a tyre hugger for the rear wheel. It looks sportier and comes with a premium track bike essence. Recently, R15S has been launched in the Indian automobile market. The bike carries across DNA resemblance to both the versions but retails as an independent variant. It carries the ease of version 1.0 with the technical update of the second version.

I had Yamaha R15 V1. It is running around one lakh 45 thousands km according to the calculation of 2nd speedometer and complete 13 years, and still in perfect condition. I touched 145 at long stretch highway. Am the first owner, it was dream sports bike at that time. And many more km to clock on it. It was a best motorcycle in motorcycle history. Yamaha is always my favorite brand. Because my father had rx100 Rajdoot edition it's was completed 47 years still in condition and one kick start. I wish again R15 V1 model launch in market with more power, more modern technology with high cc engine.

Even the stock tyres are excellent on the R15. You won't feel like something is missing from this package.

Some people says that this bike has poor mileage and high maintenance. Yamaha has given everything that one can expect in a 150cc bike. It will cost more because you get fuel injection, 6 gears, deltabox frame, liquid cooled engine and much more than standard 150cc bikes.

Best Features: High & Low end Torque, Responsive yet Refined engine

Pros: Best in class build quality, performance

Cons: Headlight, Pillion seat

Initial pick up is great but the end performance is not up to mark. The only drawback is the headlight which is attractive but not effective during the night. It is an eye-catcher on the road.

Best Features: Aerodynamic and low end torque!!

Pros: Low end torque, aerodynamic fairing and built quality.

Cons: Not comfortable, worst headlights

I was confused between RS200 and R15. Then took test drive of both bikes. RS 200 is very comfortable in sitting and seat comfort. The only downside of this bike is engine reliability and harshness. Front visor of RS200 starts rattling after sometime which is very annoying.

Best Features: No vibrations at all throughout the rev range

Pros: Styling, engine refinement

Cons: Rear seat is a challenge for pillion rider
