Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 Review

09 Jul, 2017 04:15 PM

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

More than a decade ago, Royal Enfield Thunderbird created a new segment for itself in our Indian bike market. Since then, the bike has not been challenged by anyone and enjoys monopoly in the market. Now, Royal Enfield has launched the up-graded version of this bike. Let’s get in to the detailing of this new variant.

Design and Style

Royal Enfield has kept the original design of Thunderbird intact. The bike looks similar to the outgoing model but there are slight changes which add fresh appeal to this bike. These changes are similar to the new Thunderbird 500. The bike now has a projector lamp in its headlight which lacks visor and front cowl. The naked appearance gets enhanced by the chrome finished side indicators and instrument console. Thunderbird now comes with a compact front fender which gels well with the multi-spoke rim of this bike. When you move to the side of this bike, you will notice new up gradations like new paint finish for its fuel tank and side panels. The bike also features new split seat with new back rest for the pillion rider. The steel framed engine is placed below the fuel tank which gets connected to a long chrome finished silencer. Royal Enfield has cut down the size of its rear fender and now features a new stylish LED tail light. The chain sprocket of this bike also moves to the right side while it sports a new rear disc brake on the left side.

Instrument Console

Royal Enfield has modernized the instrument console of Thunderbird 350. The bike now features a combined analogue- digital instrument console. It features two circular dials with chrome surrounded rings. The left dial has an analogue speedometer while it also has a blue colored LCD for its digital odometer, 2-tripmeter, clock and fuel gauge. The right dial of this bike has an analogue tachometer and all essential LED indicators.

Engine and Gearbox

The bike retains its twin spark 346cc engine. It’s a single cylinder, 4-stroke engine which produces a peak power of 19.8 bhp at 5250 rpm. The maximum torque output of this air-cooled engine is of 28 nm which arrives at 4000 rpm. This engine is mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. It has one gear down and four gears up-shift pattern.

Acceleration and Performance

There is hardly any change in the performance of this bike. The bike is still best for highway cruising as it can easily cruise at the speed of 120 km/hr without any vibration. This engine feels well composed and supplies adequate power at low rpms. The thumping sound of this bike is a bit different than before though. Royal Enfield has kept its gear ratios short so that the bike doesn’t look for power in city traffic. The torque of this bike starts coming as early as 2200 rpm helping it to get an impressive low and mid-range. The throttle response of this bike is better than its other siblings. It takes around 15 seconds to reach 0-100 km/hr. The power delivery of this engine is quite linear and it does it quite silently. The gearbox of this bike is quite smooth and comes with well-spaced gear ratios. The key quality of this engine is that it never feels strained even after hours of driving.

Mileage

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 may return you a mileage of around 35-40 kmpl on highways while its fuel efficiency in city ranges from 25-30 kmpl.

Comfort while Riding

The bike offers a high seating riding posture with up-raised handlebar. This handle bar allows your elbows to stay in a relaxed position and also offers you a firm palm grip. It has an engine kill switch which is quite useful in city where you frequently need to turn on/off your bike. The all over visibility is also quite satisfactory. Its new seat is quite comfortable as it’s padded with high quality of fabrics. The rear rider also gets optimum comfort through rubber back rest which is quite useful on long journeys. Thunderbird has front set foot pegs which enables you to stretch your legs comfortably.

Storage Space and Safety Features

The bike has negligible space on both sides. The powerful projector lamp confirms your safety while driving at night as it offers clear vision of roads. Other safety features of Thunderbird include pass button and brake callipers on both wheels.

Suspension and Brakes

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 features 41mm telescopic forks at its front while it has twin gas charged 5-step adjustable rear suspension system. This new variant of Thunderbird comes equipped with disc brakes on its both wheels. It has a front disc brake of 280 mm and rear disc brake of 240 mm.

Ride and Handling

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 is based on the same platform of Thunderbird 500. It has a wheelbase of 1350 mm which gives it stability around corners and at high speeds. The high ground clearance of 140 mm helps you while turning this heavy machine (192 kgs) at slow speeds. The bike handles quite easily on highways but in city traffic, it takes time to adjust. The ride quality of this bike is better than its other siblings as its suspension system never allows potholes to bother you. Moreover, the bike is incorporated with wide MRF zapper tyres which sticks firmly to the road and helps this bike to stay under control in wet conditions. The biggest change in the ride quality of this bike is the addition of the rear disc brake. You seem to have complete control over this bike with the help of its powerful braking system.

Tyre Size, Shades and Variants

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350’s front wheel is of 19 inches while it has a smaller R18 size of tyre at the back. The only variant of Thunderbird 350 is offered in 5 colors - Stone, Marine, Lightning, Flickr, and Asphalt.

Verdict

Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 is priced at INR 1.43 (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). This bike feels more premium and feature rich than the outgoing model. Yes, it has become costlier than before but the newly added features completely justify its high pricing. We feel it’s a complete value for money bike as it only targets a bunch of buyers who look for an economical alternative to expensive cruiser bikes.

Questions and Answers

Most Popular Answers for Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350
Can Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 be fitted with tubeless tyres? Is it possible to start the bike by electric start every time?
29 December 2022 06:09
The tyres for the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 are tube type in stock condition but they can be converted into tubeless tyres. The advantage of tube type tyres is more visible if you go on roads where the chances of a dent in the wheel are more as the tubes would hold the air inside while the tubeless ones are useful in cities whereas you can easily repair a puncture in the motorcycle. You can start your motorcycle by electric starter every time as the battery keeps on charging itself while the bike is ridden afterwards.
Is Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 available in Yellow shade and with alloy wheels?
29 December 2022 06:05
Yes, the the thunderbird 350 comes with alloy wheels and no, the thunderbird 350 does not come in Yellow color. The shades available are; Marine, Lightning, Stone, Asphalt, Flickr.
I am 5'10" tall. .Is Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 or 500 suitable for me?
29 December 2022 05:59
Both the bikes are actually the same body shells with different engines. The 346cc, Thunderbird 350 is a better option when seen from the value for money point of view. It returns a better mileage and comes with a price tag of INR 1,38,376. The engine produces 19.8 BHP and 28 NM of torque. On the other hand, the Thunderbird 500 is lesser economical with its 499cc engine producing 27.2 BHP and 41.3 NM of torque. It comes with a price tag of INR 1,75,715. Going for Thunderbird 350 is a better and practical option.

It starts with 2 years of experience. Do check out my 6th review 1. Fuel tap was not working. Had to push the bike in the first month of purchase. 2. Went for free service and made a complaint which was ignored 3. Again fuel tap issue. 4. I had to fight with service person(velavan motors) to get it replaced. 5. Chrome plating of front wheel came off after 3 months for which the wheel was replaced. 6. Major issues was with clutch. I have 6 bills of clutch cable which gets cut very easily. This was very painful during emergencies or middle of the nights twice. 7. Rear disk failures. Which is the main reason for me to sell the bike at a cheap rate. Beware it will come day like a cancer in this bike 8. Suspension lasts well only for an year after that say bye bye to your conformating spines. 9. The service engineer, sales engineer are the worst of them all. False promises, ignoring the old customers, money is all they are obsessed about rather than delivering the qualify.. 10. Oh! The chain . I have changed it 4 times in 2 years. Why they get noise inspite of using chain spray once in a month. 11. I service my bike very often, change oil filter , brake oil etc . Still it was let down. Selling my bike with all disappointment. Don't get fooled by its comfort. It doesn't last long. 12. Lastly the fuel gauge, the digital timer all those are just fancy. They don't work.

Best Features: Handling, nothing else

Pros: The bike is comfortable. Dot

Cons: Everything except comfort which lasted for 1 year max

Royal Enfield was my childhood love as I used to get amaze by its powerful sound. So when I got enrolled to college, I bought Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350. Its looks and sound is the main reason I bought it. Its seating position is comfortable but it is not suitable for short riders. Back rest for the pillion rider allow pain free ride on long distance to the back passenger. Yeah, handling in city traffic is a bit tiring but its braking system is really good. Suspension is smooth and it gives me 35 kmpl average on city which is okay for me. As fuel mileage is never a issue for me I just want to own my dream Royal Enfield.

Best Features: Appearance and Seating Posture

Pros: Style, Performance, Comfortable Ride

Cons: Mileage...

It is a very stylish bike and it has got a dominating style which seems to have a bold look on the road compared to other bikes. It offers a pretty good riding position thanks to the ergonomically designed handlebar. The huge 20 litres fuel tank, LED tail lamps, digital meter console and retractable foot pegs are the other impressive features which proves to be a good competitor for other bikes. The only drawback is that it has fragile indicator lights. Overall the bike is very good. It may not have a huge followers like for Pulsar but is liked by people who want a classic vintage ride experience.

Best Features: Fuel efficient & Stylish

Pros: Huge fuel tank, comfortable seat for pillion and rider, fuel efficient, stylish

Cons: Fragile indicator lights

Can easily do 120kmph without vibration?? You reach 70 kmph in an enfield and all hell starts breaking loose bit by bit, until the vibration is unbearable at 100kmph. People have nightmares of vibration after a long ride at cruising speeds of 80-120kmph. Royal Enfield needs to get their shit right now, whats with this non refined engine and the brakes?

Hey guys, Just booked RE TB 350 one day before. Had been through lots of discussions, suggestions , advice regarding Mileage, price, Engine etc...etc....
As some of you are getting 30 -35 + mileage which I believe is OK . But still I can not overlook some of my friends reply , that, they are hardly getting mileage of only 20+ / liter. Friends is it true? Becoz when a preson like me is impatient to buy TB 350, the 20+ figure of mileage is very disappointing... Will most of you share your experience about your TB 350 mileage with me....

I disagree with the mileage figures given above, I own one TBTS 2013, 350 cc, It has never given a mileage of less than 40kmpl -- even in bad city traffic. Same has been the experience other owners I've met at the service centre.

I am buying the bike next month. I am wondering if I could ride the bike 160Km on the same day. I had to take the delivery from Bangalore and I put up in Mysore. I am confused as I heard that it is not advisable to ride absolutely new bike for that long distance. Please advice, if I can ride or I should get that transported to Mysore via lorry.

Hi Guys, I am riding my bull for about 6 months now. I can say I am more than satisfied with my TB. Its eye-catching, its prestigious & it gives you the performance however you want. Thanks to its Torque, it can start from a signal and within seconds you will find others far back.
Only disappoint is its high speed. I know it is not a bike where I will go by 150kmph, but a 350cc engine producing only about 130 is somehow very low.
Another one is Parts Price. Yes, when you are buying a Royal bike, you have to bear with it. Be good with her, She will be with you...

I am 5'10 and weigh about 85 kg and this bike is fun to ride.
My brother is 5'4 and weight 58 and he handles this bike much better than I can
so if you think you are small or not healthy and cannot handle RE bikes than you are wrong you can...

Hi Guys, I am interested in buying The Royal Enfield but confused which one to choose (Thunderbird 350/ Classic). I belong to a hill station (Panchgani) where we have rains for 4 months would there be any issues while riding a bike in rains or in slippery conditions. Secondly, we don't get enough opportunity to apply the top gear and free the engine, instead the bikes here run on 1st, 2nd n 3rd gear only would this pull down the average?

I am from Bangalore presently having a Pulsar150 for last 7 years. I have booked a TB about 8 months back and it ready for delivery now. I am going to make the payment tomorrow. But I am bit confused and not able to take a decision. Guys, I am 5'6" and around 72Kg now. How do you guys feel if I am out in this mad traffic on a Thunderbird. Is it suitable for me like an average built man to ride in this bumper to bumper Bangalore traffic?
Looking for you reply to make a decision about payment on Monday.

But the only think which is make us think about thunderbird 350 is price. The price of the new one is higher around Rs.40000 than the old one which is no meaning.
