It's risky. Hyundai has always been strong at offering good value. As well as that, moving upmarket could alienate their core customers without winning over luxury buyers.

The key will be execution. If the Ioniq 9 is truly a premium experience, it may raise the whole brand. If it overreaches, though, it will fall short.

It’s not just about the Ioniq 9, but how Hyundai handles the rest of their lineup. They have to be careful not to forget their bread and butter models in the pursuit of the luxury market.

I’m wondering how this is going to affect Genesis. Does moving upmarket squeeze out their luxury brand?
How does the Ioniq 9's design measure up to the Kia EV9?
02 January 2025 11:07
The Ioniq 9’s design? I’m all in. What I want in an EV is something that looks like it's from the future, and it does. I don't like the EV9, it's too boxy, too old school.
How does the Ioniq 9's design measure up to the Kia EV9?

Nah, the EV9 wins hands down. The Ioniq 9 is a bloated space whale. At least the EV9 has character and isn't trying too hard to be 'futuristic'.
How does the Ioniq 9's design measure up to the Kia EV9?

I think each design has its advantages. While the EV9 will probably look dated faster and be less aerodynamic, the Ioniq 9 has that classic SUV appeal. In the end, it’s really a matter of personal preference.

I’m growing to like the Ioniq 9’s design. It was too weird at first, but I do like how it stands out. The EV9 just looks like any other SUV on the road.

I'm torn. I worry about practicality, but the Ioniq 9 looks cooler. But those sloping lines could take cargo space and visibility. The EV9 looks more functional for everyday use.
Does EV9’s larger battery pack make a real world difference over the Ioniq 9?

Absolutely! On long trips that extra 10 kWh will make a huge difference. That could mean one less place to stop and charge — and that's a big deal when you're trying to make good time.
Does EV9’s larger battery pack make a real world difference over the Ioniq 9?

In daily driving, I don't think it'll matter much. In fact, most people don’t use half of their battery capacity in an ordinary day. It’s extra weight you’re carrying 90% of the time.

In cold weather, the real benefit might be. With EVs, you lose a lot of range when it's freezing out, and that extra buffer could come in clutch during the winter months.

What I’m more interested in, however, is how it affects charging speeds. It’s a game changer for road trips if they can keep the same peak charging rate with the bigger pack.

We shouldn’t forget about battery degradation. If you have a larger pack, you have more wiggle room as the battery ages. That could make a big difference in the long term ownership experience.

I think it's a game changer for families. How about being able to face your kids on long trips, or a mobile conference room for work? It’s kind of like having a minivan’s versatility in a cooler package.

That sounds like a maintenance nightmare waiting to happen. The more moving parts, the more things that can break. No thanks, I'll stay with regular seats.

It’s a neat party trick, but I’m not sure how often anyone is going to actually use the thing. You just want to face forward and drive most of the time.
