The Ioniq 5’s EPA rating is good, but how does it compare to its real world range?
The Ioniq 5's EPA rated range has been a talking point for many buyers, and electric vehicle range is a big factor for many buyers. Official figures are one thing, but real world performance can often be quite different depending on a number of factors including driving conditions, weather and the way you drive. Owners, however, report that some will exceed the EPA estimates, while others will fall short—particularly in cold weather or at highway speed. The debate continues to what the Ioniq 5's range is compared to competitors like the Tesla Model Y or Ford Mustang Mach E in similar conditions. In addition, the Ioniq 5's ability to fast charge and how that influences long distance travel is commonly compared to the car's total range. This question explores the real world experiences of Ioniq 5 owners and what range they are getting on a daily and long distance basis.
In mild weather, it's pretty close to the EPA rating. I usually get around 95% of rated range.
Cold weather range tanks. When it's below freezing, I'm lucky to get 70% of the EPA rating.
I've even gone over the EPA range a few times on road trips. It’s really all about how you drive it.
Driving on the highway at 75+ mph definitely cuts the range more than I thought it would. City driving is much better.
It's hit or miss. There are some days when I’m amazed at how efficient it is, other days I’m constantly watching the range meter.
With the range, you can get through the day easily, but I wouldn't go on any long road trips without knowing what I was going to do.
Real world range is about 10-15% less than EPA, which isn’t bad for an EV compared to some other EVs I’ve driven.
