Maruti Ritz Diesel ZDi
General information and overview
The Maruti Suzuki Ritz Diesel ZDi is a well-rounded hatchback that excels in several key areas. It features a 1.3-liter diesel engine that delivers 75 horsepower and 190 Nm of torque, providing a punchy performance especially in the mid-range. The vehicle is known for its spacious and comfortable interiors, with good headroom and legroom, making it ideal for both city driving and long road trips. The ground clearance is superb, ensuring that the car handles Indian roads with ease. Additional features include central locking, digital odometer, air conditioner, keyless entry, and steering-mounted controls. The Ritz ZDi also comes equipped with safety features like airbags and ABS. While it may have some minor issues like engine noise and a slightly bouncy ride at high speeds, overall it is a reliable and practical choice that offers excellent value for money.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Maruti Suzuki Ritz Diesel ZDi is a robust and reliable choice for those seeking a diesel hatchback in India. My experience with this vehicle has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly in terms of its engine performance and fuel economy. The 1.3-liter diesel engine, producing 75 horsepower and 190 Nm of torque, is punchy and fun to drive, especially once the turbo kicks in around 2000 rpm. The handling is composed, and the hydraulic steering offers good feel and feedback. However, the ride quality can feel stiff, and there is noticeable low-end lag. Despite these minor drawbacks, the Ritz ZDi stands out for its spacious interiors, good headroom, and legroom, making it a practical and comfortable option. The ground clearance is excellent, making it apt for Indian roads. Overall, it is a solid choice for those who prioritize performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency.
Recent news and announcements
The Maruti Suzuki Ritz was discontinued in India in April 2015, marking the end of its production run. This decision was made to make way for new models, such as the YRA, which was under development at the time. The Ritz had seen declining sales, with only 34,500 units sold in the fiscal year 2014-15. I believe this move was necessary for Maruti Suzuki to stay competitive in the market.
The refreshed Maruti Ritz diesel saw an improvement in fuel efficiency by 10%, achieving a mileage of 23.2 km/l. This was achieved through reductions in engine friction and optimization of the motors calibration. The new model also introduced three new colors: breeze blue, mystique red, and granite grey. I believe these changes made the Ritz a more attractive option for fuel-conscious buyers.
The Maruti Ritz ZDi diesel variant was powered by a 1248cc, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produced 75 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 190 Nm of torque at 2000 RPM. It was mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and could reach 60 km/h from a standstill in 5.9 seconds. I think this engine provided a good balance between performance and efficiency.
In 2012, Maruti Suzuki launched a refreshed version of the Ritz diesel, introducing the ZDi trim. This update included several new features such as a new front grille, body side moulding, a new audio system with USB, dual-tone red interiors, and electrically adjustable rear view mirrors. The ZDi variant also came with dual airbags, ABS, alloy wheels, and steering-mounted audio controls. I think these updates significantly enhanced the vehicles appeal and safety.
The facelifted Maruti Ritz, including the ZDi variant, was expected to be launched during the festival season in India in 2012. The new version was designed to look more appealing and included features like airbags and ABS as standard in the ZDi diesel variant. I believe this facelift helped in maintaining the Ritzs competitiveness in the market.
Pricing details and changes
The Maruti Suzuki Ritz Diesel ZDi, although discontinued, can still be found in the used car market. When it was available, the ex-showroom price for the Ritz ZDi was around Rs. 6.58 lakh. On-road prices varied by location but typically included additional costs such as registration, insurance, and other local taxes, which could add up to around Rs. 7.5 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh. In the used car market, prices can vary widely depending on the condition, mileage, and year of the vehicle. Generally, you can expect to pay between Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh for a well-maintained model. This pricing makes the Ritz ZDi a competitive option in the used car segment, offering good value for money considering its performance and features.
Fuel efficiency information
The Maruti Suzuki Ritz Diesel ZDi boasts impressive fuel economy, which is a significant factor for many buyers in India. The ARAI-certified mileage for this variant is 23.2 kmpl, making it one of the most fuel-efficient diesel hatchbacks in its class. In real-world conditions, owners have reported mileage ranging from 18 to 22 kmpl, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. This excellent fuel economy, combined with the robust engine performance, makes the Ritz ZDi an attractive option for those concerned about running costs.

The average mileage of diesel engine Swift is 23kmpl (on highways) and 18kmpl (in city). This hatchback offers the minimum ground clearance of 170mm and boot space of 204liters. The kerb weight of Swift with petrol engine is 960kg, Swift diesel is 1050kg and Swift petrol with Automatic transmission is 990kg. It has electrical powered steering wheel that makes the minimum turning radius of 4.8meters. This hatchback measures 3850mm in length, 1695mm in width, 1530mm in height and a wheelbase of 2430mm. The McPherson strut with coil spring is used as the front suspension and the torsion beam with coil spring is used as the rear suspension. The front tires are provided with ventilated disc brakes and the rear tires use drum brakes.
With all the superior features and specifications, the Swift lacked the important security features like air bags, ABS and parking sensors. However these limitations were removed from the Swift Automatic as it has two front air bags, parking sensors and ABS with EBD. It has air conditioner that supports automatic climate control feature and provides ample cooling and heating of the cabin as per the weather. All the windows are electrically powered and supports auto up/down feature. The fuel filler and boot are remote controlled for the convenience. The rear windshield is equipped with wiper and defogger to provide best view in the internal rear view mirror. The dashboard integrated music system can play MP3, AM/FM and also supports auxiliary inputs.
The steering wheel has mounted control of music system. The ORVMs have mounted side turn indicators. The bumpers and ORVMs have the same color as the body of the hatchback itself. The instrument cluster included in the car consists of dual trip meter, speedometer and tachometer. The standard size of tires used in this hatchback is 185/65 R15 with 15-inch alloys. Maruti is offering Swift with a warranty of 2years/40,000kms. The shades available in Swift are Blazing Red, Torque Blue, Silky Silver, Arctic White, Glistering Grey and Midnight Black. This hatchback has got good looks, high mileage and a powerful engine but its basic variants lack the security features as well as the boot space. Most importantly it is the product of a trusted passenger vehicle company of India.
