Saturday, 18 January 2014 12:22 PM The Maruti 800, an iconic car in India, was discontinued in January 2014 due to stringent emission and safety norms that the aging model couldn’t meet. This decision was made as the car could not comply with the new BS4 emissions standards. I think this was a necessary step to ensure safer and more environmentally friendly vehicles on Indian roads.
Saturday, 18 January 2014 03:49 AM In its 31-year run, the Maruti 800 sold nearly 3 million units, making it the fifth best-selling car in Indian history. The car was launched in 1983 and quickly became a favorite among both the rich and the poor due to its affordability and reliability. I believe its impact on democratizing car ownership in India is unparalleled.
Saturday, 14 December 2013 03:20 PM The Maruti 800 was known for its compact and lightweight design, fuel-efficient engine, and ease of maintenance. Saturday, 14 December 2013 02:58 PM When the Maruti 800 was launched, it generated immense excitement among people from all walks of life. The first owner, Harpal Singh, received the car keys from then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, marking a significant moment in Indian automotive history. I think this event symbolized the cars importance in Indian society.
Tuesday, 15 October 2013 05:49 AM The Maruti 800 underwent several updates and facelifts over the years to keep up with changing safety and emission standards. However, as technology advanced, the car started to face criticism for its outdated design and lack of modern features. Despite this, it remained a dominant force in the entry-level car segment.
Friday, 20 September 2013 09:47 AM The cars production milestones were significant, with it crossing 1 lakh units in 1986-87, 5 lakh units in 1992-93, and 10 lakh units by 1996-97. It continued to break records, reaching 15 lakh units in 1999-2000 and 20 lakh units by 2002-03. This consistent growth highlighted its enduring popularity.
Saturday, 10 August 2013 07:07 PM At the time of its discontinuation, the Maruti 800 was priced around Rs 2.20 lakh for the petrol version with an air conditioner. It employed a 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine, producing 37bhp of max power and 59Nm of peak torque, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. I think the pricing was quite competitive for its time.
Monday, 15 July 2013 03:07 AM The Maruti 800 played a crucial role in modernizing Indias industrial landscape and making the country more mobile. It replaced the Bajaj scooter as the dream vehicle of the Indian middle class and paved the way for other car companies. Its legacy continues to influence the Indian automotive industry.

I live in Kolkata. We have the 2001 STD Model. Recently, we have restored the one with full engine overhauling, and loaded this car with more features. We drive this car every time. I love the Maruti 800. I am a fan of it.

Best Features: Air Conditioning, Music System, Accessories Socket

Pros: Good performance, power to weight ratio, mileage, easy and fun to drive, easy to maintain, easy to drive in crowded areas

Cons: The interiors could have been a little better. Bad smell when it is old, less space in the car
