Yamaha R15 V2 Review
Quick Review by Maxabout Team
Yamaha R15 was the first affordable sports bike in India which shared most of the styling bits with Yamaha's much expensive bikes from R series. The looks and performance of this bike made it famous instantly and looking at its popularity and rising competition. In comparison to R15 Version 1.0, R15 Version 2 features an all-new design for engine fairing, new design for alloy wheels, split seat which is now better cushioned, new graphics and decals, fatter rear tyre - 130/70 – R17. The bike now comes with a bigger 220mm rear disc for better braking, all-new LED tail lamp which looks much better than 2010 model of YZF-R15, new ECU mapping for better pick-up and fuel efficiency, weight increased by 5kgs (now it weighs 136kgs), new design for saree guard and mudguard plus new design for the silencer/exhaust pipe. Yamaha has made some noticeable changes in R15 Version 2.0 but if you are searching for them at its front then you will be disappointed.
Apart from the wider front tyre and darker visor, there is nothing else which differentiates it with the earlier version. Only when you move to the side of this bike then you can notice the major changes which make this bike look extremely cool and sporty than before. The middle cowl in the full-size fairing has been redesigned to improve the aerodynamics of this bike which also manages to impress you visually. Moreover, you can notice the aluminium swing arm at the back which is first in any Indian bike. The bike also gets new silencer with carbon finishing and a nameplate on it. The rear section of the bike is much improved and looks much sporty than any of its competitor. The fatty rear tyre (130/70) is a welcome feature which was needed desperately in this bike. It features new split seat, saree guard and mudguard.
However, the triangular LED tail light could have been better. The new tail cowl is also appealing and comes without any kind of grab rail. Yamaha R15 V2 is powered by a liquid cooled 4-stroke 149.8cc engine. It's a mono cylinder, 4-Valve; SOHC engine which is designed to pump out a power of 16.8 bhp at 8500 rpm with utmost torque production of 15 Nm available at 7500 rpmThis engine is equipped with a six-speed gearbox with one gear down and five gears up-shift pattern. More or less, the feel and throttle response of this engine are the same to that of the outgoing model. Yamaha has slightly tweaked the engine which is hardly noticeable due to its additional weight of around 4kgs. The initial gear ratios make it perfect for daily usage. It's only when you go pass 6000rpm then you can notice the slow behaviour of this engine.
However, there are no vibrations till 8500rpm and the refinement level is also very satisfactory but the high-end performance of the engine indicates at its lower displacement. The bike has become faster than before and does 0-100km/hour in just above 13 seconds. One can reach the top speed of 130km/hour with this bike but while doing so, it may not feel as eager as most of its competitors. The high-end performance is nowhere near to Bajaj Pulsar 220 and Honda CBR 250R. R15 V2 shares its instrument console with the R15 Version 1. It has a round pod for its analogue tachometer while it features a digital speedometer, fuel gauge and odometer with other LED indicators. The blue backlight looks funky at night but could have been darker in colour.
Yamaha R15 is known for its sporty stance which was never offered before in any premium bike in India. The aerodynamic design of the bike allows the rider to bend forward with knees rolled back in perfect position. With its low seating, one can easily find a firm hold on this bike which gives you the confidence to rule the road which is absent on bikes like Pulsar and Hero Karizma ZMR. The new seat is also very comfortable with foot pegs being placed much behind than normal. The clips on the handle are nice and convenient to hold and the overall feel, while you drive this bike, is magnificent. Yamaha R15 Version 2.0 has the same telescopic forks at its front with linked type mono-shocker at its back. The bike takes most of the bumps with ease and feels free to cross most of the speed breakers and potholes without any complaint. The suspension system confirms that the high seated pillion rider also get stress free and comfortable ride.
The braking system of this bike has been upgraded with bigger discs on its both wheels. The bike has a 267mm disc brake at its front while the rear disc brake is of 220mm. The bigger discs have resulted in more precise and safe barking which confirms you a safe ride. With extended wheelbase (1345mm), fatty tyres and aluminium swing arm at the back, the new R15 Version 2.0 feels more confident and eager to go. The bike now holds the road firmly and with its flawless suspension and ground clearance of 160mm, the bike offers you a very pleasant ride.
Light and accurate handling of this bike are the biggest USP of it and the new bike retains this quality. The bike feels sharp and fast around corners. R15 V2 looks sportier than ever and with bigger tyres and discs, it's fun to drive this bike. Nothing goes wrong for this bike except for its less powerful engine. The ride and handling of this bike prompt you to push it hard but its underpowered engine is a let-down. Despite its smaller engine, the bike is priced really well and it's a good package from Yamaha and it's certainly worth to buy this bike.

User Reviews for Yamaha R15 (OLD)
Yamaha R15 V1
I had Yamaha R15 V1. It is running around one lakh 45 thousands km according to the calculation of 2nd speedometer and complete 13 years, and still in perfect condition. I touched 145 at long stretch highway. Am the first owner, it was dream sports bike at that time. And many more km to clock on it. It was a best motorcycle in motorcycle history. Yamaha is always my favorite brand. Because my father had rx100 Rajdoot edition it's was completed 47 years still in condition and one kick start. I wish again R15 V1 model launch in market with more power, more modern technology with high cc engine.
Best 150cc bike ever.
Even the stock tyres are excellent on the R15. You won't feel like something is missing from this package.
Best Features: Brakes and agility to switch in tight corners.
Pros: Agility, Aerodynamic, Progressive brake bite, R series delta box frame.
Cons: From my opinion, there are no cons
Most powerful 150cc bike
Some people says that this bike has poor mileage and high maintenance. Yamaha has given everything that one can expect in a 150cc bike. It will cost more because you get fuel injection, 6 gears, deltabox frame, liquid cooled engine and much more than standard 150cc bikes.
Best Features: High & Low end Torque, Responsive yet Refined engine
Pros: Best in class build quality, performance
Cons: Headlight, Pillion seat
Sexiest 150cc bike in india
Initial pick up is great but the end performance is not up to mark. The only drawback is the headlight which is attractive but not effective during the night. It is an eye-catcher on the road.
Best Features: Aerodynamic and low end torque!!
Pros: Low end torque, aerodynamic fairing and built quality.
Cons: Not comfortable, worst headlights
Yamaha R15 is best product that your money can buy
I was confused between RS200 and R15. Then took test drive of both bikes. RS 200 is very comfortable in sitting and seat comfort. The only downside of this bike is engine reliability and harshness. Front visor of RS200 starts rattling after sometime which is very annoying.
Best Features: No vibrations at all throughout the rev range
Pros: Styling, engine refinement
Cons: Rear seat is a challenge for pillion rider
Yamaha R15 V2 Discussion
Hi i miss r15 v2 lots please ? reintroduce that bike that Is my aim bike please reintroduce that please
Hi guy m from kashmir last year i brought the r15 v2...but i dnt get the speed how much that have expected....my bike touchs only 112 speed...but on doubbling only 98 speed plz guys hlp me
even i have r15 v2 2014 model, according to the journal detail its shows high speed of 131 kmph but i reached with the high speed of 143 kmph on highway.
I am an American expat, living in the Philippines. I have owned many bikes in my lifetime, and usually stuck with off road bikes until moving here. It is a totally different arena. Most of the bikes available in the Philippines, are semi-auto scooters, and chinese utility bikes, any of these cost less than 2,000 US dollars, some are less than 500 brand new.
The big bikes are way overpriced here, and not practical at all. With heavy traffic and terrible roads, having a 600cc or, God forbid, a 1000cc bike, is just silly. You would be hard pressed to get the bike above 3rd gear, and you would probably end up dead if you did.
This bike is lacking in the power I am used too, but for the run to the market, or even a long cruise, it is just about perfect. Very nimble, with a good ride, great feel, safe under both wet and dry conditions. Again, it could use a little more power, but all in all, this is a sporty little bike, much better than anything else I have ridden since moving here 8 years ago. It's a bit pricey, but the trade-off in style and performance, makes the extra cost worth it. Just having solid hydraulic disc brakes, makes it worth the extra cash.
I think r15 should launch with a new 200cc engine
please improve the pillion seat..its too uncomfortable..i think yamaha should bring v3...
i love this bike Yamaha r15 when in India ??
b4 buying R15V2 i read several comments...
i bought it & this is the best 150cc sport bike in compare of CBR150 or any pulsar bike. the bike look is awesome its performance too, my top speed in this bike is 126kmph, its give an avg of 42 in city after 8 months. if prefer to buy this bike if anyone wants to to buy a sport bike then go for R15. several ppl said in the comments that its give back pain while travelling but thats never happen to me & who cares abt the pain if u have your dream bike with u. yeah i accept that the back seat is not comfortable but if u know how to seat in sport bike then it is not a prbl.
R15 Bike Mast hai Yaar Chala ke dekho
its handle is not suitable to take long tours.due to this karizma R has failed.High cc bike 200-300cc must have comfortable driving posture with suitable any of 100 cc bikes but strong enough.
The r15 have SOHC engine ... And the cbr150 have DOHC engine ... So which is the best ? R15 or CBR150 ??
I want to ask some ques ?
If rear tyre of r15 v2 is changed and a thin tyre is used is there any problem
This is good machine, even cant beat suzuki r150, i still choose r15 as a my public bike
i recently bought yamaha R15 from an authorised dealer of Yamaha namely "ADARSH YAMAHA” located at "LAJPAT NAGAR NEW DELHI” but after driving my bike for four to five days i observed some noise coming out from the engine so i visited to the authorized service centre of yamaha located at OKHLA NEW DELHI and they told me that it would be rectified in your first service. After having first service at the same service centre the problem was not resolved and i observed the same noise but louder than it was before & some kind of vibration in the body also, so i went their again so many times to fix it up but didn’t got any responce & still my bike is at the same service center from last 9 days but the problem is still not fixed.
Bike Details Are As Under.

Yamaha R15 Raring Red
Yamaha R15 Raring Red
Bought 10 days ago, despite knowing the upcoming launches. Leaning & riding is the best part. If you know the correct posture for riding this bike, you won't get any back pains or wrist pain (as speculated by many). No regrets for even a single penny spent to grab this lovely bike.
Hi guys,

hey u all guys..I am Siddhant..I hv two bikes 220f and CBR250r. and my neighbour has R15v2.0...seriously speaking..if mostly u r riding in cities then 220F is best but on highway runs mostly CBR or R15V2.0 is best. If u ant to buy b/w CBR150 and R15V2.0..go for yamaha. Nw according to budget if i speak Below 1 lakh buy 220f. Around 1.20-1.30 lakh buy R15v2.0 and if more than 1.50-1.60 close your eyes and go straight away to buy CBR250R.
