General information and overview

The Renault Captur (2020) is a compact premium SUV designed for Indian roads, offered in petrol and diesel variants with manual transmissions. It features a stylish exterior with full-LED lighting elements and a confident high seating position that improves visibility. The interior focuses on comfort with well-cushioned, supportive seats and a cabin that can accommodate five passengers, albeit with a slightly snug rear middle seat. Performance-wise, the turbocharged petrol engine provides spirited mid-range power, while the diesel engine is more fuel-efficient and torque-rich for Indian conditions. The suspension is tuned for comfort and handles rough roads well, giving the Captur an edge in ride quality over some rivals. Inside, it offers a mix of convenience features and quality materials that evoke a premium feel. Its slightly higher price tag reflects this positioning, making it a good option for buyers looking for a differentiated SUV with solid highway manners and competent fuel economy.

The 2020 Renault Captur is a mid-size SUV offering a premium design language highlighted by its full-LED lighting and well-crafted interior. It comes with two engine options: a 1.5-liter diesel producing about 109 bhp and a 1.5-liter petrol engine delivering around 105 bhp, both paired with manual transmissions. Its cabin feels upscale with supportive seats and a high driving position offering excellent visibility. The suspension is tuned to absorb the rough Indian roads comfortably and the ground clearance is adequate for city and occasional off-road use. While the rear seats may feel a little cramped compared to segment leaders, they are still comfortable enough for short trips. Feature-wise, it is well equipped, focusing on safety and infotainment. The Captur’s appeal lies in its premium styling, comfortable driving experience, and respectable fuel economy, making it a worthy option for buyers seeking a crossover with European flair and practical usability in India.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Renault Captur (2020) strikes a fine balance between style and substance in the mid-size SUV segment. The cabin is comfortable with supportive seats that help reduce fatigue on long drives, and the high seating position adds to driving confidence. Underneath the visually appealing design, it delivers sensible practicality and decent driving dynamics, although the steering feel could be more precise for everyday city driving. Space at the rear is adequate but not class-leading, with a slightly contoured middle seat making three adults a tight fit. The suspension setup is impressive, offering a smooth ride on varied Indian road conditions, and the turbocharged petrol engine provides a fun-to-drive character, especially in the mid-range. While it might not be the outright leader in every category, the Captur offers a good package for someone wanting a premium-feeling SUV with dependable mileage and comfort for highway journeys. Its unique styling helps it stand out where rivals like the Hyundai Creta are more conventional.

The Renault Captur 2020 strikes a fine balance between stylish design, comfort, and sensible practicality, making it a compelling choice for those wanting something different in the mid-size SUV segment. Its high seating position offers great road visibility and the supportive seats manage comfort well even on long drives. The ride quality is notably good, adept at handling rough Indian roads thanks to its commendable suspension and ground clearance. While its rear space could be better and the steering feels slightly vague to some, the overall driving experience remains enjoyable with a fun turbocharged engine and a decent mid-range punch. The Captur stands out with a premium feel, especially inside, and packs enough features to satisfy most buyers. However, its pricing and slightly less rear legroom than rivals might be a consideration. Still, under its flashy exterior, it remains a sensible crossover worth considering for those who value comfort and style in equal measure.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The 2020 Renault Captur represents a solid mid-size SUV option for Indian buyers seeking something beyond the conventional. I found it to be a genuinely European crossover that delivers on comfort and highway performance, though it demands a specific buyer who appreciates styling over traditional SUV aesthetics. The Captur's 210mm ground clearance stands as the best in its class, providing practical off-road capability despite its premium positioning. Under the hood, the 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 106 horsepower while the diesel variant offers 110 horsepower, both paired with manual transmissions. Real-world mileage averages 13.87 kmpl for petrol and 20.37 kmpl for diesel variants, making it reasonably efficient for daily commuting. The cabin feels spacious for front occupants with comfortable long-distance capability, though rear legroom could be more generous. The 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration keeps it contemporary, while dual airbags and ABS come standard. Recent updates added rear parking sensors, seat belt reminders, and speed alert systems to meet evolving safety norms. Pricing starts at Rs 9.50 lakh for the base RXE petrol variant. This Captur justifies consideration if you value European refinement and dynamic styling alongside practical family transport.

The 2020 Renault Captur proved to be a refreshing addition to India's mid-size SUV segment, offering genuine European crossover styling that stands apart from the conventional rugged aesthetic many Indian buyers gravitate toward. During my evaluation, I found it to be a sensible balance between usability and modern design elements. The car delivers impressive ground clearance of 210mm, which is best in class, and features all-LED headlamps as a segment-first offering. Performance-wise, the petrol variant generates 105 bhp from its 1498cc engine, while the diesel option produces 109 bhp from a 1461cc unit, both paired with manual transmissions. Real-world efficiency figures stand at approximately 13.87 kmpl for petrol and 20.37 kmpl for diesel variants. The cabin impressed me with its comfortable seating suitable for long highway drives, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation, automatic climate control, and rear AC vents. Pricing starts from Rs. 9.50 lakh onwards for the petrol variant. While the rear legroom could have been more generous and the ride tuning could be optimized for everyday drivability, the Captur remains a capable and comfortable crossover that justifies its position in the market.

I recently experienced the 2020 Renault Captur in India, and I found it to be a compelling mid-size SUV that genuinely stands out from the more conventional offerings in its segment. The ride quality impressed me immediately, with the 210mm ground clearance delivering excellent comfort as it effortlessly absorbed road imperfections and maintained stability even at highway speeds. The front seats proved exceptionally wide and supportive, though I did notice the seat height remained quite high even at its lowest setting. The cabin design felt distinctly European with its crossover styling, though some tall passengers may find rear legroom just adequate. What genuinely won me over was the overall driving experience on long distances, where the comfortable seating and highway-munching capability truly shine. The mileage figures of 13.87 kmpl for the petrol manual and an impressive 20.37 kmpl for the diesel manual variant make it practical for everyday use. While the steering lacks reach adjustment and feels somewhat disconnected, the overall package represents good value. The air purifier, cruise control, and touchscreen infotainment system with navigation enhance the practical appeal, making the Captur a sensible choice for those seeking a stylish yet capable European-flavored crossover experience in India.

The 2020 Renault Captur in India represents a thoughtful balance between European styling and practical SUV capabilities, though it comes with some notable trade-offs worth considering. I found the vehicle's European crossover design genuinely appealing, with its chic appearance setting it apart from conventional rugged SUV aesthetics that many Indian buyers traditionally prefer. The cabin quality has improved notably, featuring Volvo-like textile upholstery and thoughtful design elements, though some scratchy plastics still drag down the overall impression. The 1.5-litre petrol engine delivers adequate performance for urban driving with a claimed mileage of 13.87 kmpl, but I wish it offered more punch during overtaking, especially compared to the diesel variant. The 210mm ground clearance is best-in-class, and the seven-inch touchscreen with navigation adds practical value. Comfort is respectable with good steering column adjustability and a commanding driving position, though rear three-quarter visibility can be occasionally problematic. The real weakness emerges when you desire an automatic transmission for everyday convenience, as the current manual-only petrol option feels limiting. Despite its price point being competitive with sub-four-meter SUVs after discounts, the Captur truly shines on highways where its planted handling and stability inspire confidence. It's fundamentally a sensible, comfortable crossover that rewards long-distance driving.

Renault has launched the new Captur E-TECH Plug-In Hybrid, featuring a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors, producing a cumulative power of 160 hp. This model can run up to 65 km on electric power in urban use and offers a combined range of up to 135 km. The battery can be recharged in 3 to 5 hours. I think this hybrid technology is a significant step towards sustainable mobility.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The Renault Captur (2020) petrol variant is priced from around INR 9.5 lakh ex-showroom in India, while the diesel variant starts at about INR 10.5 lakh ex-showroom. On-road prices typically range between INR 11 lakh to INR 14 lakh depending on the city, insurance, and variant chosen. This pricing places it marginally above some direct competitors, making it a slightly premium choice within its segment. From my perspective, while the Captur may not be the cheapest, the blend of features, design, and comfort justify the price for buyers seeking something distinctive and well-equipped. However, its pricing may require a reconsideration by value-conscious buyers as rivals like the Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 offer aggressive price points and stronger aftersales support.

In India, the Renault Captur 2020 petrol manual variant is priced ex-showroom starting around Rs 9.50 lakh, while the diesel manual version is priced at approximately Rs 10.50 lakh. On-road prices vary by city but generally range from Rs 10.50 lakh to Rs 12.5 lakh for petrol and Rs 11.5 lakh to Rs 13.5 lakh for diesel variants. The Captur is positioned slightly higher than many competitors in its segment, reflecting its premium features and build quality. However, this pricing is justified to some extent by its solid suspension setup, comprehensive feature list, and Renault’s emphatic styling that sets it apart. While some buyers may find it pricier compared to rivals like the Hyundai Creta or Tata Nexon, discounts and offers can make it more accessible. In India’s competitive SUV market, you pay a premium for Captur’s European design and comfort, but in return, you get a vehicle that stands out in terms of feel and driving pleasure.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Captur’s mileage in India stands at about 13.87 kmpl for the petrol manual and 20.37 kmpl for the diesel manual variants under ARAI testing. Real-world figures may vary slightly but generally remain satisfactory. For buyers conscious of running costs, the diesel variant offers excellent fuel efficiency, making it ideal for extensive highway use. The petrol, while less efficient, delivers a peppier drive experience, so your choice should align with your primary usage pattern and fuel preference.
December 1, 2025
The Captur delivers around 13.87 kmpl for the petrol manual and around 20.37 kmpl for the diesel manual variant as per ARAI ratings. Considering Indian city and highway driving conditions, the diesel version offers significantly better running cost efficiency. If low mileage and fuel economy are your priority, the diesel is the more practical choice, especially for frequent and longer-distance use, while the petrol balances refinement and daily usability well.

Captur is surprisingly amazing SUV to check out for. Obviously it has the best in class designs with some class-apart features like full-LED lights, Dual-toned body that has a choice of enhancement, but it is called the SUV mainly because it shares the same strong foundation like Duster giving it an exceptional riding and handling capabilities.

Captur does take the advantage over other cars in the segment with better dimensions, good ground clearance and the same riding capabilities like Duster!

Looks like Renault this time focused more on safety than on features. Captur gets tick on all the checklist of safety related features, Great work Renault!

Impressively designed. Spec's highlight that Renault Captur has a good ground clearance. And of course it already has an edge over other cars in terms of driving quality.
