Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Nissan Terrano 2020 stands out as a robust and stylish compact SUV that balances luxury, spaciousness, and solid performance for Indian roads. It offers a commanding presence with its muscular exterior design that feels more modern and sportier than its close rival, the Renault Duster. Inside, the cabin is spacious and airy with quality upholstery, advanced HVAC, and practical features like parking sensors and a good sound system, although it lacks some modern tech like rear AC vents and push-button start. The diesel engine delivers punchy and responsive performance, especially above 2200 rpm, paired with smooth gear shifts and well-tuned suspension that excels on both city streets and rough terrain. Its 205 mm ground clearance is ideal for dealing with India’s varied road conditions. While the fuel efficiency is slightly lower than some rivals and the price is on the higher side, the Terrano offers excellent ride comfort, handling, and build quality, making it a practical choice for buyers prioritizing durability and driving dynamics over feature-loaded fancy. Overall, it’s a competent, reliable SUV that remains relevant for Indian users seeking a rugged yet comfortable vehicle.
December 8, 2025
The Nissan Terrano 2020 stands out as a robust and stylish SUV that balances luxury, solid build quality, and excellent ride comfort, especially suited for Indian roads. Its muscular and sporty exterior coupled with a well-crafted, spacious interior with quality fabric and leather upholstery give it a premium feel in its segment. The ride quality is excellent with good handling and a high ground clearance of 205mm making it a reliable choice on rough and urban terrains alike. While it excels in safety features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and stability control, it falls slightly short on modern convenience tech like rear AC vents and push-button start. The diesel engine delivers strong performance, particularly above 2,200 rpm, with smooth gear shifts and manageable turbo lag. However, the fuel efficiency is moderate and its price on the higher side might make buyers consider alternatives. Overall, Terrano is an attractive package for those wanting a comfortable, spacious, and dependable SUV with a commanding road presence in the Indian market.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Nissan has officially discontinued the Terrano in India, removing it from their official website. The decision was largely due to the vehicle not receiving a BS6 facelift and declining sales. Nissan is now focusing on other SUV models, including the upcoming Kicks SUV.
April 30, 2020
The Nissan Terrano, which was priced between Rs. 9.99 lakh and Rs. 14.64 lakh, was available in six trims and offered both 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine options. The lack of updates and competitive features led to its discontinuation. I think this was a necessary move to make way for more competitive models.
April 20, 2020
Nissan Terranos interior, although improved from its Renault Duster counterpart, lacked standard features like climate control and a touchscreen music system, which are now expected in its segment. This shortfall in features contributed to its declining popularity. I believe modern buyers are very particular about these amenities.
March 26, 2020
The Terrano was known for its spacious cabin, massive 475-litre boot, and good NVH insulation. However, its design was seen as dated, and it failed to match the finish quality of rivals like the Hyundai Creta. Despite these positives, it wasnt enough to keep it in the market.
February 28, 2020
Nissan Terrano had a ground clearance of 205mm, which was more than sufficient for Indian roads. It also offered cruise control and an electronic stability program, making it a comfortable and stable drive. However, these features were not enough to save it from discontinuation.

Price

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Nissan Terrano 2020 is positioned in the premium compact SUV segment with ex-showroom prices starting around Rs. 10 lakh for the base diesel variant and going up depending on the trim and features. On-road prices vary by city due to taxes and registration but typically add around 10-15% to ex-showroom, placing the on-road cost roughly between Rs. 11 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore. This pricing is somewhat higher than its closest rivals such as the Renault Duster, reflecting the Terrano’s positioning as a slightly more rugged and feature-focused option. The price premium can be justified by its superior build quality, safety equipment including dual airbags and ABS with EBD, and advanced features like air quality control and parking sensors. However, prospective buyers looking for value-oriented options might consider this price tag steep compared to other SUVs offering more modern infotainment or connectivity options. Overall, the pricing reflects Nissan’s emphasis on robustness and driving comfort rather than extensive gadgetry, targeting buyers who value substance over flash.
December 8, 2025
In India, the Nissan Terrano 2020 diesel variants are priced roughly starting from Rs. 10.00 lakh ex-showroom, with on-road prices varying widely depending on the city and variant but typically ranging near Rs. 11.5 to 12.5 lakh for mid to top trims. The pricing is positioned higher than direct competitors like the Renault Duster, reflecting its improved premium appeal and enhanced build quality. While the price may seem steep compared to rivals, the Terrano offers extended boot space of 475 liters, superior ride comfort, and a more refined cabin feel, which somewhat justifies the premium. Buyers should consider the cost of ownership including insurance, registration, and state taxes that affect the on-road price significantly. Given its strong point of view in ride quality and sturdiness, the slightly high pricing can be worthwhile for Indian consumers prioritizing comfort and road presence over budget constraints.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Nissan Terrano’s diesel engine delivers mileage in the range of 16-19 kmpl on Indian roads under ideal conditions, with city mileage around 13-16 kmpl and highway figures closer to 18-19 kmpl. While this is decent for a compact SUV with tough suspension and a powerful 1.5L diesel engine, it’s slightly lower than some competitors due to the Terrano’s heavier build and less focus on fuel economy optimization. Buyers concerned about running costs should consider that its strong engine and durable components may justify the somewhat higher fuel consumption through lower maintenance and long-term reliability. If mileage is a primary priority, there may be more fuel-efficient options, but the Terrano balances performance with acceptable running costs for Indian conditions.
December 8, 2025
The mileage of the Nissan Terrano 2020 in India stands at around 13 to 16 kmpl in real-world driving conditions, with official figures slightly optimistic. Given India’s fuel price scenario, its diesel engine offers decent efficiency but isn’t segment-leading. Buyers should weigh this moderate fuel economy against its superior ride and performance. If running cost and mileage are prime concerns, some rivals may offer better numbers. However, the Terrano provides a solid balance between driving pleasure and economy for those who use their SUV for mixed city and highway travel.

The exterior of Nissan Terrano gives a unique and stylish look with its trendy headlights, laminated windscreen at front, top variant having rear spoiler and roof rail, 15/16-inch alloy or steel wheels, rear defogger, rear washer and wiper and adjustable external wing mirrors and much more which gives this SUV a pretty unique and advanced look.

The interiors are quite spacious with good quality fabric upholstery in simple variants while the top variant is expected to have top quality leather upholstery, spacious dashboard, a large instrument cluster, powerful AC, trendy gear knob with metal finish, power steering wheel and many other features to add to the glamor of this beautiful SUV. New Mahindra Scorpio vs. Nissan Terrano

Verdict

Overall, this SUV seems like a good combination of luxury, space, engine performance, safety, style and sturdiness and just looking a little down in its fuel economy and a little steep price range.

Comparison: Nissan Terrano vs. Renault Duster

As the Indian automotive industry is booming, more and more auto manufacturers are finding their way in to the Indian market. In 2010, we saw a great SUV, Duster from French car makers, Renault. Since the day it was launched, Duster got immense popularity due to its great looks, charismatic engine, fabulous design and classy interiors. Now, Renault-Nissan joint venture is looking to take over the market again with their newest SUV, smartly modified and designed with great exterior and interior looks and is based on the platform of Duster.

On August 20, 2013, Nissan unveiled the new Terrano, a smart and luxurious SUV to blow your mind and it was officially launched on 9th October in the Indian market which is a festive season in India. So, Nissan's intentions are quite clear to wipe out the competition by taking the advantage of festive season as it will be the time of high sale for best models. This SUV will be manufactured at company's plant at Tamil Nadu near Chennai and the booking for purchase of this SUV will start very soon.

If we talk about the exterior design, Terrano beats Duster by a great numbers in terms of style and sportiness. It has a new hood, newer and stylish 16-inch machined alloy wheels, gorgeous revised front grille with black treatment, new sporty front bumper and headlamps, revised stylish black treatment of B and C pillars, colored roof rails, new sporty rear combination tail lamps, smaller chrome lip above the number plate at rear, redesigned beautiful rear bumper, unexposed sporty tow hook at rear and an antenna at front top. All these changes gave it an advanced and muscular look with a touch of sportiness and provide it with an upper hand over Duster in terms of exterior styling.

In terms of interior styling, Terrano is again better than Duster in ways of fabric and leather quality used inside but there are some features missing and unchanged also. It comprises of classy, spacious and airy cabin with good visibility of around with good amount of boot space of around 475 litres. Duster was criticized for its poor quality of materials and thus, Terrano worked greatly on that part and has quality fabric upholstery in simple variant and top quality leather upholstery in top variant.

It also has newer stylish center console air vents which are rectangular this time and also has tiny storage space above them. It has same trendy gear knob with metal finish, powerful HVAC, newer steering wheel with silver inserts but without any audio controls which were present in Duster, adjustable seats, all four power windows, parking sensors, adjustable reading lamps, vanity mirror, armrests, trunk light, Air Quality Control System, same speedometer console and the quality music player with CD/MP3 player, FM Radio, USB port, AUX-in, Bluetooth connectivity and powerful speakers. Also, the SUV has the similarly placed knob to adjust outside mirrors under hand brake lever which is a little awkward. Otherwise, it provides a luxurious interior with greater comfort, quality and space than Duster.

Nissan Terrano has same 1.6 petrol and two diesel engine options like the Duster. It is available in six shades which includes Bronze Grey, Sapphire Black, Fire Red, Pearl White, Blade Silver and Sterling Grey. Terrano is priced between the price range of INR 9.58-12.44 lakhs which is more than Duster. But looking at its superior design and advanced features, the price seems like a little worry for now. Also, the overall sales will depend on the engine configurations they provide and the number of variants they would launch.

They could have given a Muscular Front forward design in the side which looks very ordinary.
Floor mounted rear AC is another shortcoming which would restrict the middle seat pax.
If the Clutche and Steering is gonna be soft like a petrol version than the vehicle will do well. Test drives are yet to be offered
