Maruti Alto LXi (Old Model)

About
The Maruti Suzuki Alto LXi is a compact hatchback that has been a staple in the Indian automotive market since its introduction in 2000. Powered by a 796 cc engine producing 47 Hp and 62 Nm of torque, it is equipped with a manual 5-speed transmission. The car features front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, though it lacks advanced safety features like ABS and EBD. It has a seating capacity of five, with a fuel tank capacity of 35 litres and a wheelbase of 2360mm. The cars compact size and light steering make it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, while its fuel-efficient engine ensures low running costs. Overall, the Alto LXi is a reliable and practical vehicle that has stood the test of time in India.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Maruti Suzuki Alto LXi, particularly the older models, has proven to be a reliable and economical choice for many Indian car buyers. My experience with this vehicle highlights its strengths in low cost of ownership and maintenance, making it an ideal first car for many. The Alto LXi excels in city driving, offering ease of handling and parking, which is a significant advantage in Indias congested urban areas. However, the engine can feel underpowered, especially when using the air conditioner, and the lack of advanced safety features like ABS and EBD is a notable drawback. Despite these limitations, the Alto LXis value for money, good fuel efficiency, and robust build quality make it a solid choice for those prioritizing practicality and affordability.
Price
The prices for the Maruti Suzuki Alto LXi, during its production run from 2000 to 2012, varied based on the year and location. Ex-showroom prices for the Alto LXi in India during that period ranged from approximately Rs. 2.40 lakh to Rs. 3.80 lakh, depending on the variant and fuel type (petrol or CNG). On-road prices would typically include additional costs such as registration, insurance, and other local taxes, pushing the total to around Rs. 3.00 lakh to Rs. 4.50 lakh. These prices were highly competitive, making the Alto LXi an accessible option for first-time car buyers.
Latest Updates
Sunday, 02 April 2023 09:56 AM The decision to discontinue the Alto 800 was also influenced by the rising demand for the Alto K10, which has become the main model in this segment for Maruti Suzuki. The Alto K10 offers more features and better performance, making it a preferred choice over the Alto 800. I believe this shift towards the Alto K10 is a strategic move to cater to evolving consumer preferences.
Sunday, 02 April 2023 12:51 PM The Alto 800 LXi had several key features, including a digital odometer, air conditioner, Bluetooth connectivity, and central locking. However, it lacked an automatic transmission option and had a stripped-out base variant, which might have affected its appeal to some buyers. I think these omissions were significant in a market where convenience features are increasingly important.
Friday, 31 March 2023 09:22 PM Maruti Suzuki has officially discontinued the production of the Maruti Alto 800, including the LXi variant, due to the increasing costs and declining demand in the entry-level hatchback segment. The company found it financially unviable to upgrade the Alto 800 to meet the BS6 Phase 2 emission norms. I think this move is a sign of the shifting market dynamics, where consumers are opting for more feature-rich models like the Alto K10.
Friday, 31 March 2023 12:24 PM The Alto 800 LXi, which was once a bestseller, saw a significant decline in sales over the years. The segments volumes dropped from around 450,000 units in FY16 to less than 250,000 units in FY23. This decline was largely due to increased vehicle acquisition costs and static consumer income levels. I believe this trend highlights the challenges faced by entry-level vehicles in keeping up with regulatory and market demands.
Friday, 31 March 2023 10:30 AM The Maruti Alto 800 LXi was priced between Rs 3.54 lakh and Rs 5.13 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) before its discontinuation. It was powered by a 796cc petrol engine producing 48PS of power and 69Nm of torque, with a CNG option available that reduced the power and torque figures to 41PS and 60Nm respectively. The car had a 5-speed manual transmission as the only option.
Friday, 31 March 2023 12:32 PM Maruti Suzuki sold over 1.8 million units of the Alto 800 from its launch in 2000 until 2010, and an additional 1.7 million units from 2010 onwards. The Alto brand, including the Alto K10, has cumulatively sold around 4.45 million units. This legacy underscores the Altos significance in the Indian automotive market. I think the Altos impact on Indian roads will be remembered for a long time.
Tuesday, 23 April 2019 08:33 AM Maruti Suzuki had updated the Alto 800 to meet BS6 emission norms earlier, but the additional costs associated with complying with BS6 Phase 2 norms made it unfeasible to continue production. This update included necessary safety features and cosmetic changes but did not significantly alter the vehicles core specifications. I believe this highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing regulatory compliance with market viability.
Tuesday, 23 April 2019 06:22 PM The 2019 facelift of the Maruti Alto 800, including the LXi variant, was launched with a starting price of Rs 2.94 lakh for the base Standard variant. This update included the same 796cc, three-cylinder engine now compliant with BS6 norms, producing 47 bhp and 69 Nm of torque. I think this facelift was a good attempt to keep the model relevant, but ultimately, it wasnt enough to sustain sales.
Tuesday, 23 April 2019 05:37 AM The Maruti Alto 800 LXi was available in six color options: Uptown Red, Silky Silver, Granite Gray, Mojito Green, Cerulean Blue, and Solid White. This variety helped in appealing to a broader range of consumers. I believe the color options were one of the few areas where the Alto 800 still managed to stand out.
Tuesday, 23 April 2019 06:22 AM The Alto 800 LXi had a claimed mileage of 22.05 kmpl for the petrol version and 31.59 km/kg for the CNG version. This fuel efficiency was one of its strong points, especially in a segment where running costs are a major consideration. I think the fuel efficiency was a key selling point, but it wasnt enough to overcome other market challenges.
Mileage
Friday, 22 November 2024 06:53 PM The Maruti Suzuki Alto LXi is known for its impressive fuel efficiency, which is a crucial factor for many Indian buyers. The petrol variant offers a mileage of around 19.7 kmpl, while the CNG variant provides an even better mileage of 26.83 kmkg. These figures make the Alto LXi an economical choice for daily commuting, especially in urban areas where fuel efficiency is paramount.
