General information and overview

The Hyundai Xcent 2019 is a sub-4 metre compact sedan based on the Grand i10 platform, positioned as a value-for-money family car in India. It comes with two engine options – a 1.2-litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol producing 82 bhp and 114 Nm, and a 1.2-litre U2 CRDi diesel with 74 bhp and 190 Nm, both paired to a 5-speed manual, with the petrol also available with a 4-speed automatic. It offers a spacious cabin with generous legroom and a large 407-litre boot, making it one of the roomiest in its segment. The ride quality is comfort-biased, handling rough roads well and staying stable at highway speeds, though body roll is noticeable in sharp corners. Features include a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, steering-mounted controls, rear AC vents and electric ORVMs in higher variants. Safety is limited to dual airbags and ABS in top variants, with no standard ESP or more airbags. It’s now only available in the used car market, where it stands out for space, comfort and diesel efficiency, but lacks the modern safety and tech of newer rivals.

The Hyundai Xcent 2019 is a subcompact sedan developed specifically for the Indian market, sharing its platform with the Hyundai Grand i10 hatchback. It features a choice between a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 82 bhp and a 1.2-litre diesel engine with 74 bhp, both known for refined performance and reliability. The sedan benefits from spacious interiors with ample legroom, comfortable seats, and a 407-litre boot space, making it practical for families and daily commuting. Its ride quality leans towards comfort with a suspension tuned for Indian road conditions. The vehicle is equipped with essential convenience features such as steering-mounted controls, rear AC vents, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and key safety features, though basic ABS is restricted to higher trims. Ground clearance stands at 165 mm, suitable for Indian roads. Overall, the Xcent combines affordability and functionality, making it a preferred choice in the compact sedan segment for value-conscious buyers seeking a balance of comfort, efficiency, and brand reliability.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Hyundai Xcent 2019 is a sensible choice in the sub-4 metre sedan segment, especially for those who prioritise comfort, space and fuel efficiency over outright performance or modern tech. Built on the Grand i10 platform, it offers a well-tuned suspension that soaks up bad roads well and delivers a relaxed ride quality, making it ideal for daily city commutes and occasional highway runs. The petrol variant with the 1.2-litre Kappa engine is adequate for city driving with decent low-end torque, while the diesel unit is the real star with strong mid-range punch and class-leading mileage. Interiors feel spacious for a car of this size, especially in the rear, and the boot is one of the best in its segment. However, it misses out on features like standard ABS and lacks the latest safety tech, which is a concern in today’s context. The infotainment system is user-friendly and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, adding to its practicality. Overall, the Xcent 2019 makes sense as a used car buy for budget-conscious buyers who want a comfortable, fuel-efficient sedan with good cabin and boot space, but it’s not the most engaging or feature-rich option available today.
December 7, 2025
The Hyundai Xcent 2019 stands out as a competent subcompact sedan in the Indian market, combining practicality with a comfortable ride and respectable fuel efficiency. It offers a smooth driving experience with its 1.2-litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol engine delivering 82 bhp and 114 Nm torque, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox that suits city and highway driving well. It scores particularly well on interior comfort, space, and build quality, feeling more premium than many rivals in its segment. While the handling is stable and the suspension comfortable over rough roads, some body roll and vertical movement in fast corners remain noticeable. Feature-wise, it includes conveniences like rear AC vents, steering-mounted audio controls, and a touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, yet ABS is limited to higher trims. Overall, it is a well-rounded sedan that appeals for daily use, offering good value with solid after-sales support, but not quite matching premium higher-segment sedans. The Xcent is ideal for those prioritizing comfort and mileage over outright performance or sporty handling.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Hyundai is expected to launch a CNG variant of the Xcent, adding a cleaner and greener powertrain option to the lineup. This move is part of the companys efforts to expand its offerings in the subcompact sedan segment. I think this will be a great option for those looking for a more environmentally friendly choice.
November 19, 2019
Hyundai announced the name of its upcoming sedan, the Aura, which is expected to replace the Xcent. Although details are scarce, it is believed that the Hyundai Aura will be the next-generation Xcent subcompact sedan. This change indicates Hyundais strategy to refresh its lineup and attract new buyers.
November 13, 2019
Images of the next-generation Hyundai Xcent have surfaced, showing the car in a new dual-tone color scheme. The car, though heavily camouflaged, appears to be nearing production stage with notable design changes such as a metallic black roof and light blue body color. I think the dual-tone look will give it a fresh and appealing appearance.
November 8, 2019
The Hyundai Xcent has been updated with additional safety features, including ABS and EBD as standard across all variants, along with dual front airbags. This update positions the Xcent more competitively against other subcompact sedans like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Tata Tigor. I believe these safety enhancements will be a significant selling point.
August 26, 2019
Hyundai updated the Xcent with a new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, rear AC vents, and other comfort features. The top variants also received rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, enhancing both comfort and safety. I think these additions make the Xcent a more compelling choice for family car buyers.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The Hyundai Xcent 2019 was officially discontinued in India and is no longer available as a new car, so there is no current ex-showroom or on-road price from dealerships. When it was last sold, the ex-showroom price in cities like Delhi ranged between ₹5.85 lakh and ₹8.79 lakh, while the on-road price went up to around ₹11.85 lakh depending on the variant and location. Since it’s out of production, any Xcent 2019 available now is in the used car market, where prices depend heavily on condition, location, odometer reading and variant. In the second-hand market, a well-maintained Xcent 2019 petrol or diesel can be found between ₹4.5 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh, with diesel variants usually commanding a slight premium due to their superior fuel efficiency. For buyers today, this makes the Xcent an attractive used sedan option, especially when compared to newer hatchbacks or compact sedans that cost more. However, it’s important to factor in insurance, potential repair costs and parts availability, as Hyundai has shifted focus to newer models and service support for older sedans may not be as aggressive as for current line-up.
December 7, 2025
In India, the Hyundai Xcent 2019’s ex-showroom price ranged approximately from ₹5.85 lakh to ₹8.79 lakh depending on the variant and fuel type. On-road costs vary by city, and in Delhi, prices can reach around ₹11.85 lakh on-road for higher variants. The price point makes it competitive within the sub-4 meter sedan market, appealing to buyers seeking a budget-friendly yet feature-packed package. When compared to rivals like Maruti Suzuki Dzire or Honda Amaze, the Xcent's pricing is slightly aggressive considering its premium interiors and build quality. However, the lack of ABS on lower variants and limited engine options can influence value perception. It should also be noted that newer models or competitors offering more advanced tech might challenge its price-value balance today. Nevertheless, for buyers focused on a trusted brand with reasonable pricing for a compact sedan, the Xcent retains a good proposition in urban and semi-urban settings.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Hyundai Xcent 2019 delivers strong real-world mileage, making it a smart pick for buyers focused on running costs. The 1.2-litre petrol manual returns around 17-19 kmpl in mixed city conditions and up to 20-21 kmpl on highways, while the automatic is noticeably thirstier at about 14-16 kmpl. The 1.2-litre diesel is the clear winner here, offering 22-24 kmpl in the city and up to 25-26 kmpl on highways, which translates to very low fuel bills over time. For someone doing high daily running or frequent long drives, the diesel variant is the better choice despite a higher initial cost. The petrol remains a good option for light city use where fuel savings are less critical. Overall, the Xcent’s efficiency, especially in diesel form, keeps running costs low and makes it a practical, economical sedan in the Indian context.
December 7, 2025
The Hyundai Xcent 2019 offers mileage figures that make it economical for Indian buyers concerned about running costs. The petrol variant delivers a certified 19.1 kmpl (ARAI), while the diesel variant offers a more impressive 24.4 kmpl, making the diesel particularly attractive for those with higher daily usage. This efficient fuel consumption coupled with a reasonable fuel tank capacity supports long-distance travel without frequent fuel stops. The car’s torque delivery at low RPMs also helps achieve good mileage in real-world city conditions, which is critical in India’s traffic. Thus, if mileage and low running cost are primary concerns, the diesel variant stands out as a strong candidate.
