The Ashok Leyland Stile is a pragmatic choice for those who prioritize space, durability, and fuel efficiency over flashy styling or high-end features. Its rugged and boxy design ensures maximum interior room, comfortably seating up to seven passengers, making it an ideal MPV for large families or commercial use in India. The 1.5L diesel engine delivers adequate power and impressive fuel economy, suited for city runs as well as longer highway drives. While the Stile isn't the most refined vehicle on the road and lacks plush interiors or advanced infotainment, it offers a no-nonsense utility with a comfortable ride quality and reliable handling even on rough Indian roads. Safety features like dual airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors add essential peace of mind. It is a sensible, budget-friendly option for buyers who want a robust, spacious vehicle that also keeps running costs low, especially in the commercial and fleet segments. However, driving enthusiasts or those seeking premium comfort may find it basic.
The Ashok Leyland Stile offers a practical and spacious option for those who prioritize utility and economy over flashy features. With its rugged design, ample seating for up to 12 passengers in the 2025 variant, and a robust 1.5L turbo diesel engine, the Stile handles urban and semi-urban commutes with ease. It strikes a good balance of comfort and durability, especially suited for large families or commercial use like fleet operators. The ride quality is commendable, absorbing rough Indian road conditions well, and its straightforward manual transmission enhances control. Overall, the Stile stands out for those seeking a no-nonsense, budget-friendly MPV with commendable space and efficiency rather than luxury or performance thrills.
Recent news and announcements
Ashok Leyland has no current plans to relaunch the STiLE, despite earlier announcements. The production of the STiLE was halted in May 2015 due to low demand. I think this decision is wise given the competitive market and the need to focus on more successful models.
The Ashok Leyland STiLE was initially launched with a plan to introduce a compressed natural gas (CNG) engine, but it was never implemented. The vehicle was only available with a diesel engine during its production run. I believe the CNG option could have been a game-changer in the Indian market.
The STiLE was produced in three variants: LE, LS, and LX, each with the same engine specifications but differing in seating capacity and additional features like alloy wheels. The LE variant had 8 seats, while the LS and LX variants offered options between 7 and 8 seats.
Ashok Leyland unveiled the STiLE during the 2012 Auto Expo, and it was launched on July 16, 2013. The vehicle was a rebadged Nissan NV200, produced under license for the Indian market. I think the partnership with Nissan was a good move, but execution was key.
The Ashok Leyland STiLE was powered by a 1.5-liter K9K diesel engine, producing 75 bhp (56 kW), which was less than the Nissan Evalias 85 bhp (63 kW). This engine choice was likely made to optimize fuel efficiency and cost.
Pricing details and changes
Ashok Leyland Stile is priced attractively for the Indian market, targeting budget-conscious buyers. The ex-showroom price in India for the 1.5L diesel variant hovers around INR 8.5 lakh to 9 lakh depending on the city, with registration, insurance, and taxes pushing the on-road price closer to INR 10 lakh to 10.5 lakh. This makes it competitive against other seven-seater MPVs and budget SUVs. The pricing reflects a compelling value proposition for a spacious, diesel-powered utility vehicle with adequate safety gear. Its affordability and low cost of ownership make it especially appealing for commercial users, fleet operators, or large families seeking an economical people carrier without the premium price tag of more feature-loaded rivals. Considering the robust chassis and decent feature list for basic comfort and safety, the Stile's price stands out as a practical choice for Indian buyers who want maximum interior space and mileage from a minimal investment.
The Ashok Leyland Stile in India is competitively priced between approximately ₹8.5 lakh and ₹9.9 lakh ex-showroom depending on the variant, specifically for the 1.5L diesel manual model. On-road prices usually range from ₹9.5 lakh to ₹11 lakh across metros, factoring in taxes, insurance, and registration fees. This pricing places the Stile attractively against rivals in the compact MPV segment, especially when considering its 12-seater capacity and commercial use appeal. The affordable acquisition cost alongside low maintenance and running expenses make it a strong value proposition for families and fleet operators alike. Its pricing strategy reflects Ashok Leyland’s intent to penetrate beyond commercial vehicles and cater to budget-conscious buyers who need large capacity transport solutions without stretching their budgets on luxury or premium features.
Fuel efficiency information
The Stile’s 1.5L diesel engine delivers a commendable mileage of around 19 to 20 km/l under typical Indian driving conditions. This efficiency helps contain running costs, especially for users who cover high daily distances, such as commercial operators or large families. The good fuel economy combined with a modestly powered but reliable engine means lower fuel expenses and a better total cost of ownership, making it sensible for mileage-conscious buyers prioritizing economy over outright performance.
The Stile delivers an ARAI-certified mileage of around 20 km/l, which is impressive for a 12-seater MPV powered by a diesel engine. This figure helps significantly lower running costs, especially for those using it extensively for family travel or commercial passenger transport. Considering typical urban and highway driving conditions in India, owners can expect efficient fuel consumption that justifies the purchase when fuel economy is a high priority.
