MAXABOUT RATING AND OVERVIEW | |
Vehicle Overview | TVS Jive was discontinued few years back due to lack of sales and poor customer response. It was nothing more than a restyled version of TVS Star City, which has been a popular moniker since last decade. It was powered by 109.7 cc, single cylinder engine that was good for 8.4 BHP at 7500 rpm and 8.3 Nm at 5500 rpm. The decline in its sales can even be due to the presence of most selling products like Hero Splendor, HD Deluxe and TVS Sport itself. The motorcycle carried a wet weight of 115 kg and claimed 90 kmph of top speed with single rider. |

TVS Jive Review
Quick Review by Maxabout Team
TVS has launched a trendsetter bike which establishes a new segment of bikes in India. The bike namely Jive is India’s first ever clutch free motor bike. Will this bike be able to impress Indian commuters? Let’s check out.
Design and Style
TVS Jive is short in size and borrows most of the styling cues from its sibling Sport. The face of this bike is its most attractive part. It features a well styled headlight which looks modern with its tinted visor. The visor is short physically but features prominent lines on it. The clear lens indicators are placed very near to its cowl which gives it a compact yet stylish look. Jive has partly black colored front fender which complements its black colored alloy wheels and front forks. Its engine, muffler and rear grab rail also follows the black theme. The heat protector on this muffler enhances the appearance of this bike. The cool tricolour graphics looks best seen from either side. It has a small fuel tank which features a big cut which can easily grab your attention. The rear cowl of this has been painted white in color which is very attractive but its basic tail light is a let-down. Other than this, it features a trendy fender at the back.
Instrument Console
TVS Jive has twin white colored circular pods in its instrument console. One of them features its analogue speedometer and odometer. The second dial houses an analogue fuel gauge, gear shift and other essential indicators.
Engine and Gearbox
TVS Jive shares its mono cylinder 109.7cc engine with TVS Wego. This air-cooled, 4-stroke engine churns out a peak power of 8.4 bhp at 7500 rpm. The maximum torque production of 8.3 Nm is accessible at 5500 rpm. This engine works with a four speed automatic gearbox which needs no clutch. These are rotary gears which can take you from its fourth gear to neutral in a one shift.
Acceleration and Performance
You will be delighted with the performance of this bike. There are certain factors which makes this bike one of its kinds. The bike does 0-60km/hr in less than 8 seconds and can cross the speed of 90km/hr easily. TVS gives you the freedom to start and go in any gear as it adjusts itself accordingly. The bike comes equipped with Anti stalling mechanism which never stalls your bike and you can move in any gear irrespective of the speed. This feature avoids frequent gearshifts which act as a big stress relief in city traffic. The bike never stalls even if you are driving at a speed of 20km/hr in top gear. The gear transitions are very smooth and enjoyable. There is negligible rubber band effect which is usually a big concern in automatic machines. Its perfect gear ratios help this bike to move easily in city traffic and even on highways, the bike is quite impressive. This engine is very refined which feels less strained when pushed hard. The bike is certainly not as fast and refined as Honda’s 110cc bikes but can surely give them a tough competition.
Mileage
Despite having an automatic transmission, this bike manages to return a fuel efficiency of around 60-65km/ltr in city conditions. These figures even get better on highways as its mileage ranges from 66-72km/ltr.
Comfort while Driving
TVS Jive is undoubtedly a perfect option for commuters. First of all there is no clutch in this bike which takes away the tension of co-ordination with gears. There is no fear of clutch burning and halting. You enjoy tension free rides even in heavy city traffic. Apart from this, it has a full size seat which comes with proper cushioning which is very useful on long journeys. Its front set foot-pegs are quite big in size and gives nice support to your feet. The knees stick firmly around its fuel tank which has nice space on both sides. The handlebar is well in reach and offers nice control of this bike.
Storage Space and Safety Features
TVS Jive has ample amount of under seat storage space which can be opened sideways. For safety, Jive features rear saree guard, pass button and powerful headlight which confirms you clarity at night.
Suspension and Brakes
TVS Jive features inline telescopic suspension at its front while at the back, you can notice hydraulic twin shock absorber with coil spring. The front wheel of this bike is fitted with a 130mm drum brake. The bike is not offered with an optional front disc brake. A drum brake of 110mm is incorporated at its back. It’s a very capable suspension and braking system according to the weight (115kg) of this bike.
Ride and Handling
TVS Jive is a boon for city commuters. It offers the comfort and handling of a bike with relaxed gearless ride of a scooter. The suspension system is quite capable for our Indian roads filled with potholes and speed breakers. The riding posture is also quite relaxing. Jive stays calm and grounded at high speeds and sharp corners. It comes with a wheelbase of 1260mm and high ground clearance (165mm) which makes it far better than scooters. It offers a very light handling which needs negligible effort. Moreover you never need to check your gear before moving as it comes with stop, start and go feature.
Tyre Size, Shades and Variants
Jive has R17 size of tyres. One of its two variants is available with an electric start. TVS offers this bike in four shades: Black Sky, Red Fury, Green Forest and Blue Lightning.
Verdict
The self-start variant of Jive is priced @ INR46.2K (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vay)). Undoubtedly, it’s a complete value for money bike. Its pricing is the biggest USP of this bike. The bike is cheaper than many gearless scooters and entry level 100cc bikes. Jive seems to have everything positive from its looks to its performance. Moreover, it offers brilliant fuel economy and unique concept of clutch-free riding. We feel TVS should promote this bike wisely in order to make people understand its advantages. If they manage to do so, this bike can have a bright future in India.
