Yamaha SZ-X Review

21 Dec, 2021 11:59 AM

Quick Review by Maxabout Team

In order to give variety to the buyers of 150cc bikes, Yamaha has launched a new variant of their entry level 150cc bike and named it as SZ-X. They have made few changes to the standard SZ bike to add some premium appeal to this bike. Let's try to figure out the new changes. We won't say this bike is completely new but it has some noticeable changes which differentiate it from the standard SZ. The face of this bike looks more futuristic and appealing thanks to the addition of a new see-through visor. This visor is bigger than before and its transparency goes well with its headlight and cowl. Rest of the stuff like its front extended fender, rear view mirrors and fuel tank are borrowed from its younger sibling.

To make a difference, there are new graphics on its fuel tank which gels up nicely with its tank shrouds. The all black theme continues on this bike also as its most of the things like muffler and engine are given black finish. The stylishly designed black side covers are very strong and light in weight as there are made of PP (Polypropylene). There are no changes at its back. Everything is carried over from SZ and the dual taillights and tiny orange side colored indicators on its extended rear fender can be seen on this new variant. There are no changes in this department either. The boring meter panel of SZ makes its way to this new bike. The same white dial for its analogue speedometer and odometer can be spotted in this bike. Sadly, there is still no tachometer and it features only an analogue fuel gauge with other indicators.

The bike shares its engine with its younger sibling. The same mono-cylinder 4-stroke 153cc engine of SZ does duty on this bike. There is negligible difference in the performance of SZ-X and SZ. The specifications are unchanged which means the new variant also starves for power and it becomes really irritating at high speeds. SZ-X is a bit heavier than its standard variant and as a result of which the power to weight ratio of this bike decreases. The slower side of this bike is evident as soon as you pick up acceleration. The acceleration and throttle response of this bike is quite impressive and similar to its sibling in city traffic but it starts annoying at high rpms. The bike records the same timing of 6 seconds for doing 0-60km/hr but after it; SZ-X lags behind and takes more time than its sibling and other rivals in crossing the speed mark of 100km/hr. However, you will enjoy this bike more than other competitors like Discover 150 in terms of engine refinement and smooth gear transitions.

This bike is surely going to impress you in city where you need no frequent gear shifts as SZ-X pulls up heavy amount of torque which improves its drivability at low rpms. Things would have been much better and enjoyable if Yamaha would have increased its power output. The bike may return you a mileage of around 53-58km/ltr in city conditions. On highways, you can expect this bike to return anything above 60km/ltr.

You won't feel any difference in the riding posture and comfort offered by this bike. It's a very comfortable bike with front set foot-pegs which helps your knees to stick firmly to the space offered by its fuel tank. The plastic buttons used on its handle bar are soft to touch and feel premium. There are no signs of vibrations on this handle bar at high rpms. Apart from it's under seat storage space you can also use the space just above the meter panel which gets covered by the new visor. Wide rear tyre, bright headlight and rear saree guard are some of the safety features of this bike.

We are still left with the issues related to its suspension and braking system. There is still no Disc brake on this bike and the rear suspension quality is not satisfactory either. It features telescopic forks at its front and hydraulic shock absorbers with swing arm at its back. Both wheels of this bike are fitted with powerful drum brakes. The rear wheel sports a drum brake of 130mm while the front drum brake is of 150mm. Yamaha SZ-X lacks the comfort quality in its ride thanks to its soft suspension system. This factor also causes problem at high speeds when the bike isn’t much stable but things get better with its wide rear tyre and wheelbase (1320mm). Its ground clearance of 165mm helps it to easily cross most of the obstructions on our Indian roads. High speed cornering is better than its rival and you also get the right feel from its steering. The bike isn't much fun on uneven conditions but certainly impresses you with its firmness on road.

Yamaha has added a much needed electric start to this bike but it still lacks a front disc brake and some other premium features. If you are ready to compromise on disc brake at this price then it’s a value for money bike which is well built and offers strong city performance with a refined 150cc engine. But we will still not say it’s the best option as its biggest rival, Discover 150 offers much power and features than SZ-X at a cheaper price.

Yamaha SZ-X has been discontinued by Yamaha India due to low sales and variant cannibalization of the product. The motorcycle was powered by a 153 cc engine producing 12 BHP and 12.8 Nm of torque. It was offered without a disc brake and came with tube type tyres for cost cutting. Blue Core technology was not used on the SZ-X and it retailed for INR 54,500. This made it quite feasible but again the sales were low for this model.

SZR is my 3rd vehicle of this company bot not satisfied with any of the vehicle, now this vehicle giving 25 to 30 kmpl mileage which is too less. Recently I have changed the parts from the Yamaha showroom (Angul, Odisha) and all the time I go for the servicing to the showroom only and now they are refusing for the mileage test. My first vehicle (YBX-125) also didn't give satisfying mileage and after 6 years it not in the condition to use. If the company can't give good services then why would people go for this company's vehicles? If mileage will be good then only people will be benefited.

Best Features: Pickup is good

Pros: Ok with other features

Best Bike for Commuting and Cruising. . . .

Premkumar - | 6 years ago

Hi, I am using YAMAHA SZR for the past 3 and half years, at first i use to get mileage of 40kmpl, after regular service i got 52kmpl if i ride @ 50kmph. Now I am using my bike as the regular commuting and weekly cruising purpose. Daily i use to commute 40kms. Now i use to come to my home town which is 165 kms from my workplace on my bike. For the past six days i travelled 850 kms on my bike such an amazing experience. While cruising i reached the top speed of 115kmph which gives good stability and control. Pick up is little bit lower than FZ thats it, throttle sounds good and engine smoothness is amazing. Kindly font expect pick up if the pillion weights more than 80kg.

Best Features: Engine Immobilizer, Aerodynamic design, Crystal clear headlamp and indicators, rider seating position and pillion seater has good comfort.

Pros: Sportive Design, Engine smoothness, Pickup, Braking & Handling

Cons: Fool rest could be kept little back, Lack of Digital Speedometer, mileage drops from 50-39 while cruising at 80 kmph

SZ-X is a Good Commuter

Sen | 8 years ago

I used this bike past 4 yrs, according to my experience, this is a good commuter for long ride. Value for money economically and mileage also OK for me. But, it needs more power after 70 kmph. Throttle response should improve because it's not a 100 cc machine. I like the design of this bike, especially the cowl, but if it comes with disc brakes it will get sportier looks.

Best Features: Tank capacity of 14 Lt, bright headlamps

Pros: Throttle response from 0 to 60 kmph, bike looks & bright headlamps

Cons: No disc brakes, taking too much time to achieve 70 to 100 kmph, suspension can improve with gas type shock absorbers

Good review.
Wish i headed attention to it before I bought the bike. Indeed the bike goes smooth in traffic condition with very less throttle at high gears but once you cross the 65KMPH mark & u start feeling the brunt. Particularly at a speed of say 70-80 if you cut the throttle, the speed starts dropping at a significant rate. Almost as if you braked.

Perhaps a 6th gear targeting maximum power at higher speeds (say beyond 60) would have been sufficient. As said before the low speed performance is impressive & the lag is only with higher speeds.

Also the braking system is a real turnoff.

So all in all , this machine is just good for small indian cities with hardly any scope of shooting beyond 60 KMpH.

@Biswajit : i agree only disadvantage is its tyre on slippary road...so i changed it last month i loaded new dunlop tyre .. nw its gives me nice grip road... n if u hv SZR. so u need to change ur tyre like ceat, mrf or dunlop...overall before we should understand bike characteristic and specification.. as per that we need must do such possible changes....coz company already done some cost cutting changes in this bike.. like tyres and back sit rod etc.. But best quality of FZ series engine and balancing and frame type diamond chassis r good..and those area they not compromise.. and this is main things and imp in any bike

I bought yamaha szx four days before as I loved yamaha gladiator ss which I bought 3 years before.
But, SZX is seriously poor bike.
Third class drum brakes caused 2 accidents in a day out of 4 accidents in 9 years, third class chain noise, poor average, ok ok comfort. 61000 is just to fool us. Cheap is the yamaha company which fools people by showing 61000 on road for 153 cc, better was 110 cc gladiator ss for 52000 on road.

Hi...i bought SZ-X one week back.... simply to say..

Pros: Cool n comfort seating, good pickup, easy to handle in traffic, decent look, no noise from engine.
Cons: Little bit troublesome to start early in the morning, they should have provided kick as well, lack of disc brakes(but it s not at all a big problem)

Shiva kumar Ayengar

@Yuvaraj Thirunavukarasu :- But Yuvraj, how can you check the exact mileage of this bike, i couldn't because the dealer said that the fuel tank is a little deeper in the front side so even your engine is 'on' condition there is some extra fuel which goes to the 'reserve'. Hope you understand my comment.

Yuvaraj Thirunavukarasu

@Phani Kanth: If u pay 3k extra they add kicker in ur bike before delivering it to u itself. no need to worry abt ur 1st clarification. my bike gives me 45kmpl in city(it may increase aft 1st or 2nd service).

Phani Kanth Vejendla

Dear all, I want to purchase this bike but only two clarifications back-lagging me that are:

1) SZ-X have only self start. is there future provision of kick start with out touching inside engine.
2) Dealers are says that this will give  mileage around 55km in city conditions. is it true?

Shiva kumar Ayengar

I was looking for a bike above 150 cc and with no disc brakes, i got dis bike, i really get a good comfort while driving, it is really a less budget bike with good performance, and the price of Yamaha SZX when compared to the bikes made in India (Bajaj pulsar and TVS Apache) in 150 CC segment is less, so take Yamaha 153cc SZX..

Shiva kumar Ayengar

I have purchased Yamaha SZ-X and it is a really good bike specially it is stress free in indian roads, every one says it is a 'family bike' but let me say that it is a 'family super bike, its performance is awesome, let us see if performance is consistently better in long run..
