Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel)
General information and overview
The Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) is a luxury hatchback that stands out with its dynamic design and robust performance. Powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 150PS, it is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that ensures smooth and responsive driving. The vehicle features a range of safety and comfort amenities, including leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and advanced safety features like City Safety, which includes auto-braking to prevent collisions. The interior, while somewhat cluttered with buttons, is spacious and comfortable, especially for front-seat passengers. With its blend of power, economy, and safety, the V40 Kinetic is an attractive option for those seeking a premium driving experience in India.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) is a compelling option in the luxury hatchback segment, especially for those who prioritize safety, design, and a balanced driving experience. The vehicles exterior design, with its sleek lines and Thors Hammer headlights, is undoubtedly eye-catching. On the road, the 2.0-litre diesel engine provides a smooth and powerful drive, with the 6-speed automatic transmission delivering seamless shifts. However, the ride can be a bit harsh over deeper potholes, and the infotainment system, though feature-rich, can be confusing to navigate. Overall, the V40 Kinetic offers a great blend of performance, comfort, and safety features, making it a solid choice for those seeking a premium hatchback.
Recent news and announcements
Volvo has announced that it will stop producing diesel-powered cars, including the Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel), by early 2024 as part of its plan to become a climate-neutral company by 2040. This move aligns with their goal to sell only fully electric cars by 2030. I think this is a bold step towards a sustainable future, but it might leave some diesel enthusiasts disappointed.
The Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) is currently available in India only in the R-Design variant, priced at Rs 28.53 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It is powered by a 150PS 2.0-litre diesel engine and comes with automatic transmission. The car features new all-LED Thors Hammer headlights and new alloy wheels, which were updated in 2016. I believe the V40s design and features make it a compelling option in the luxury hatchback segment.
In 2015, Volvo India updated the V40 Kinetic (Diesel) with new exterior colors and alloy wheels, although the interiors remained unchanged. The car retained its leather upholstery and panoramic sunroof. This update helped keep the V40 competitive in the market against rivals like the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. I think these updates were necessary to keep the V40 fresh and appealing.
The Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) offers a mileage of 16.8 kmpl, according to ARAI standards. This makes it a relatively fuel-efficient option in its segment. The cars automatic transmission and front-wheel drive configuration also contribute to its smooth driving experience. I think the fuel efficiency is a notable advantage for those considering this vehicle.
In terms of safety, the Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) is equipped with several advanced features, including multiple airbags and electronic stability control. Volvos reputation for safety is well-known, and the V40 Kinetic does not disappoint in this regard. I think the emphasis on safety is one of the cars strongest selling points.
Pricing details and changes
The Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) was priced at Rs. 25.49 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) when it was available in the market. To estimate the on-road price, you would need to add costs such as registration, insurance, and other local taxes, which can vary by state. In Delhi, for instance, the on-road price would likely be around Rs. 30-32 lakh, considering the additional costs. This pricing positions the V40 Kinetic competitively against other luxury hatchbacks like the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, offering a strong value proposition given its features and performance.
Fuel efficiency information
The Volvo V40 Kinetic (Diesel) offers a respectable mileage of 16.8 kmpl, as per ARAI certification. In real-world driving conditions, you can expect this figure to be slightly lower, but it remains one of the more fuel-efficient options in its class. This makes it a viable choice for those concerned about running costs, especially for those who frequently drive long distances.

The pedestrian airbag provides a safer way to escape the accident in case a pedestrian comes in the way of the car. Ventilated Disc at the front and rear would handle the braking and a 17 inch alloy provision will increase its beauty. Projector lamps would be provided for better vision while driving at night.
Entertainment is managed by a console integrated 4x25 audio system with 8 speakers, making every ride full of joy. For further convenience, support for AUX, USB, Bluetooth has been provided. In short, the hatch has everything a person needs. From safety to satisfaction, from style to performance the V40 hatchback is an all-in-one package.
