The Volvo V40 is a premium hatchback designed with a strong emphasis on safety, design, and driving comfort. Cabin space is efficiently utilized for comfort and practicality, making it suitable for urban and occasional highway use. Though compact, its build quality and feature set give it an upscale feel, targeting buyers who want a blend of exclusivity and refinement not commonly found in hatchbacks in India. The limited dealer and service network and premium pricing are trade-offs to consider for potential buyers.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Volvo V40 stands out as a premium hatchback in India, offering a compelling blend of Scandinavian design, safety, and driving dynamics. Its R-Design diesel variant, with a 150PS 2.0-litre engine, balances performance and refinement well, making it comfortable for both city and highway driving. The build quality is robust, and the interior exudes a minimalist luxury appeal, with premium materials and a driver-focused layout. However, at its price point, it competes with strong rivals from Mercedes and BMW, which might offer more brand presence and broader after-sales support. The V40’s exclusivity and safety technology are significant positives, but limited dealership reach and higher maintenance costs could affect ownership experience. If you value distinctive styling, safety, and a European driving feel in a compact package, the V40 is a strong contender, although it may appeal more to enthusiasts than to buyers looking purely for value or mileage efficiency.
The Volvo V40 in India presents a compelling choice for buyers seeking a premium compact hatchback with a focus on luxury and safety. Its sophisticated Scandinavian design, combined with a refined 2.0-litre diesel engine delivering 150PS, ensures lively yet composed performance suited for Indian city and highway conditions. The R-Design variant stands out with sportier styling cues and enhanced features that elevate the driving experience. Despite its premium positioning, the V40 offers practical usability through a well-crafted cabin, quality materials, and a suite of safety technologies. However, the relatively limited service network in India compared to mass-market brands and the high price could be a concern for some buyers. Overall, the V40 balances style, comfort, and safety with decent performance, making it a strong contender for enthusiasts looking for a hatchback with a luxury badge and exclusivity in the Indian market.
Recent news and announcements
Volvo has discontinued the V40 model due to insufficient production capacity, with the XC40 taking priority. There are no plans for a direct replacement, and customers are being offered the XC40 or S60 instead. This move marks the end of an era for the V40, which was known for its safety features and efficient diesel engine. I think this is a significant loss for fans of the V40, but its a necessary step for Volvos strategic focus.
The Volvo V40 received a facelift in 2016, which included equipment upgrades, a more efficient diesel engine, and slightly revised styling to keep it competitive with other premium hatchbacks. The interior features polished aluminium trim and a well-made design, although the infotainment system is feeling dated. The V40s boot space is average for its class, and it has a strong safety record with features like automatic emergency braking. I believe the V40s safety features are one of its standout aspects.
The Volvo V40 is available in various trims, including the V40 Cross Country, which is a rugged, all-wheel-drive version designed for off-road use. The standard V40 models come with well-weighted steering, but the handling is not as engaging as some of its competitors like the Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series. The suspension has been softened to provide a more relaxed ride, but models with larger alloy wheels and sports suspension can feel firm on rough roads.
In terms of engines, the Volvo V40 offers a range of options, with the D2 diesel being a standout for its fuel efficiency and performance. The petrol engines, such as the T2 and T3, are also viable choices, especially for city driving, due to their quiet and smooth operation. However, the diesel engines are slightly noisier and less refined compared to some rivals.
The Volvo V40 has a strong safety record, having achieved a five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. It was one of the first cars in its class to include automatic emergency braking as standard, along with seven airbags and a pedestrian airbag. While parking sensors and a reversing camera are available, they require higher trim levels. I think Volvos commitment to safety is commendable and sets a high standard.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the Volvo V40 R-Design variant is priced around ₹31.91 lakh ex-showroom in Delhi. The on-road price can cross ₹35 lakh depending on the city, insurance, and taxes. This positions the V40 in the premium hatchback segment, competing directly with entry-level luxury hatchbacks. When factoring in the higher insurance and maintenance costs associated with Volvo ownership in India, the overall cost of ownership is on the higher side. For buyers seeking a premium hatchback with distinctive styling and advanced safety features, the price is justifiable, but it's essential to consider the limited dealership network and potential service expenses. For those prioritizing luxury and exclusivity over budget, the V40 offers value, though alternatives might provide stronger resale and service support.
The Volvo V40 R-Design variant is priced around Rs 31.91 lakh ex-showroom in Delhi, with on-road prices likely crossing Rs 35 lakh depending on the city due to taxes, insurance, and registration charges. This pricing places the V40 firmly in the premium hatchback segment, competing with luxury compacts and smaller premium SUVs. The exclusivity of the V40’s offer and limited dealership presence means buyers should consider the total cost of ownership, including service and maintenance expenses. The pricing reflects the high quality, advanced safety features, and premium brand cachet Volvo delivers, but it may be hard to justify solely on financial grounds when compared to more affordable rivals offering larger dimensions or more extensive servicing networks.
Fuel efficiency information
The V40 diesel delivers a mileage of around 16.8 km/l under ideal conditions in India. While this is decent for a premium hatchback with a 2.0-litre engine, real-world mileage can vary with city traffic and driving style. Running costs will be moderate but higher than non-premium hatchbacks due to parts and servicing prices. If mileage and fuel efficiency are your primary concerns, there might be more economical choices, but the V40 balances performance and reasonable efficiency well.
The V40’s diesel engine offers a mileage of around 16.8 km/l in Indian driving conditions, which is competitive for a premium hatchback with this level of performance and luxury. For buyers focused on low running costs, the V40 delivers respectable fuel efficiency that helps control operational expenses without sacrificing the driving dynamics expected from a diesel engine of this size and output.

Expert Verdict
Professional reviews and expert opinions on Volvo V40
The much awaited cross country vehicle by Volvo, the V40, was launched in India in June 2013. The Volvo V40 was designed by Chris Benjamin and Peter Horbury. It is built on Ford C1 platform which was used by Volvo C30 with modifications to electric power steering and revised spring & damper settings. The Volvo V40 cross country is a D+ segment car with crossover body type. It is offered in diesel engine with five cylinders and three valves per cylinder inline SOHC (single overhead camshaft) configuration.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine makes 1984cc of displacement. The maximum power generated by this engine is 148 bhp at 3500 rpm and the maximum torque produced is 350 Nm ranging between 1500-2750 rpm. This crossover measures 4370mm in length, 2041mm in width, 1458mm in height with wheelbase of 2646mm and ground clearance of 145mm. It has a kerb weight of 1587kg and gross weight of 2020kg. It is equipped with 6-speedautomatic transmission with front wheel drive train. In 8.68 seconds it can reach a mark of 100 kmph and has a top speed of 210 kmph. The boot space offered by the Volvo V40 is 324 litres and it has a towing capacity of 1500kg. The electric powered steering gives a minimum turning radius of 5.45 meters. It has a fuel tank capacity of 60 litres and gives an average mileage of 16.81 kmpl. Along with the support of ABS (anti-lock braking system) and EBD (electronic brake distribution) the ventilated disc brakes are used in front wheels while the disc brakes are used in rear wheels. The fading brake support (FBS) of Volvo V40 gradually builds hydraulic brake pressure and the hydraulic brake assist (HBA) ensures maximum braking pressure during a sudden stop.
The front seats allow multiple adjustments so as a comfortable driving position can be attained. The front seats are provided with inbuilt heater. The electronic climate control (ECC) maintains the cabin temperature and can be set independently for driver and passenger. The cabin filter prevents the dust and pollen from entering the cabin while the interior air quality system (IAQS) prevents the harmful gases from entering. With the 5-inch control color screen it has a console integrated 4x25audio system that supports CD, MP3, AM/FM, Aux input and is played over eight loudspeakers. It also supports Bluetooth and iPod connectivity with mounted controls on steering wheel.
Along with parking sensors it has eight airbags in case of impact. The driver support and safety package of Volvo V40 crossover includes adaptive cruise control (at all speeds), collision warning with full auto brake and pedestrian & cyclist detection, driver alert control, lane keeping aid, active high beam, road sign information, blind spot information system and cross traffic alert. Volvo has introduced IntelliSafe program that ensures the safety of the occupant and prepares the brakes in case of collision so that they respond faster when the brake paddle is pressed. Even when the brakes are not pressed the City Safety will apply the brakes and switch off the throttle to lessen the effect of impact.
The dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC) with advanced stability control (ASC) can detect a potential skid and take action to prevent it by reducing the engine power and braking the appropriate wheels. It also prevents the locking of wheels during engine braking using the engine drag control (EDC). The engine immobilizer and theft protection locks prevents the vehicle from getting stolen. Only the original key can start and unlock the vehicle.
Volvo V40 Cross Country is available in six shades named Passion Red, Electric Silver Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, Raw copper Metallic, Misty Blue and Biarritz Blue Metallic. The ex-showroom price of Volvo V40 crossover in Delhi is 28.50 lakhs (approx., may vary).
