USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Tata Zest XMS Petrol is a well-rounded compact sedan that offers a blend of comfort, performance, and features, making it a compelling choice in its segment. Transitioning from older models like the Maruti Zen, the Zest stands out with its improved build quality and solid exterior construction. The cars balanced suspension provides a compliant ride quality, especially on bad roads, though it may exhibit a bit of boat mode on extremely rough terrain. The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers linear power and almost non-existent turbo lag, enhancing the driving experience. However, the interior, while spacious and comfortable, feels a bit dated with hard plastics and a lack of storage spaces. The 8-speaker audio system and automatic climate control are notable positives. Overall, the Zest XMS Petrol is a value-for-money option, especially for those prioritizing comfort and a feature-rich package.
Price
The Tata Zest XMS Petrol is priced competitively in the Indian market. The ex-showroom price for this variant starts at around Rs. 6.70 Lakh. When you factor in the on-road costs, including registration, insurance, and other charges, the price can go up to approximately Rs. 8.5 Lakh, depending on the state and local taxes. This pricing makes the Zest XMS Petrol an attractive option for buyers looking for a feature-packed compact sedan without breaking the bank. The value proposition is further enhanced by the extensive list of features, including projector headlamps, daytime running lamps, and an advanced infotainment system.
Latest Updates
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 07:49 AM The Tata Zest XMS, a popular variant of the Zest, has been discontinued by Tata Motors as part of their broader strategy to phase out older models. This move comes after the Zest failed to meet the new BS6 emission norms. The last known price for the XMS variant was around Rs. 7.21 lakh. I think this is a significant step for Tata to focus on newer, more compliant models.
Tuesday, 30 April 2019 01:34 PM Tata Motors rolled out various offers on the Zest, including the XMS variant, in April, valid until the end of the month. These offers included benefits worth over Rs 50,000, making the vehicle more attractive to potential buyers. Such offers were common during festive seasons or to clear inventory. I think these offers helped in boosting sales temporarily.
Monday, 05 March 2018 05:38 PM Tata Motors launched the Zest Premio Edition, which is positioned between the XMS and XT variants. The Premio Edition, available only with the diesel engine, starts at Rs. 7.53 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and includes additional features like a touchscreen infotainment system with phone-based navigation. This edition was a strategic move to enhance the Zests appeal before its eventual discontinuation. I believe these additions made the Premio a compelling choice in its segment.
Wednesday, 14 February 2018 07:47 AM The Tata Zest XMS Quadrajet 75PS Diesel variant was known for its balanced set of features, including central locking, ABS, power steering, and all power windows. This variant also came with a 1.3-litre diesel engine producing 73PS and 190Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The XMS Quadrajet was a favorite among those seeking a blend of performance and comfort. I think the engines torque made it quite driveable in city conditions.
Friday, 18 November 2016 09:30 AM In terms of safety, the Tata Zest XMS scored a respectable four-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. This was a significant achievement, highlighting Tatas focus on safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and seat belts with pre-tensioner and load limiter. This rating boosted consumer confidence in the vehicle. I believe safety should always be a top priority, and Tata did well here.
Monday, 18 January 2016 02:35 AM The Tata Zest XMS was part of a record-breaking rally organized by Tata Motors, where 154 Zests formed the largest convoy of a single branded vehicle, earning an Asian record. This event showcased the community and enthusiasm around the Zest. It was a fun way to engage customers and celebrate the vehicles popularity. I think such events help build a strong brand community.
Sunday, 15 March 2015 10:49 AM The Tata Zest XMS came with an extended boot space of 390 liters and a comfortable interior, accommodating five passengers with ease. It also featured an effective air conditioning and heating unit, along with fully fabric seat upholstery. These features made it a practical choice for daily use. I believe the spacious boot was a significant selling point.
Friday, 20 February 2015 04:54 AM The Zest XMS was powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine producing 87PS and 200Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine was known for its driveability and torque, making it suitable for both city and highway driving. I think the engines performance was one of its strong points.
Tuesday, 20 January 2015 01:04 AM The Tata Zest XMS was praised for its safety features, including disc brakes in the front, drum brakes at the rear, ABS with EBD, and dual front airbags. These features contributed to its four-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. I believe such safety features are crucial in todays vehicles.
Wednesday, 13 August 2014 03:05 PM The Zest XMS was also compared to its competitors like the Maruti Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, and Honda Amaze. The Zest stood out with its contemporary design, featuring a new signature grille, projector headlamps, and LED taillights. Its interior was praised for the dual-tone Java Black & Latte color scheme and the ConnectNext infotainment system. I believe the Zests design was a game-changer in the sub-4 meter sedan segment.
Mileage
Wednesday, 20 November 2024 12:55 PM The Tata Zest XMS Petrol offers a mileage of 17.57 kmpl, as per ARAI certification. In real-world conditions, you can expect this figure to be slightly lower, around 14-16 kmpl, depending on driving habits and road conditions. This mileage is respectable for a petrol-powered compact sedan, making it a viable choice for those concerned about running costs. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient option in its class, the Zests overall package and performance make it a balanced choice.

Best automatic diesel car under 10 lakhs that's loaded with necessary features

Benson Philip | 6 years ago
helpful 13

One advice to all the people stop judging the car just because its TATA. It's got a proven engine that was used in Swift untill last year. Yes, I am talking abt the 90ps fiat engine. It's got the same manufacturer for the AMT that Maruti Celerio has. Best in class features. I have read lot of blogs including team bhp and checked with my friends for Zest's after sales service and I haven't seen any negative feedback. Servicing required @15000 km and is not that expensive approx 4-5k. They have got good colors but I would expect them to launch it in black. I would definitely recommend you to go for a Test Drive.

Best Features: Infotainment by Harman, high adjustable seats, good boot space, reverse sensor, climate control

Pros: An automatic car that comes with abs, ebd and airbags which is usually removed by other manufacturers to reduce price. Infotainment by Harman. Touchscreen

Cons: No dead pedal, Reverse camera not available by default. Design lacks a little more style if you compare with Ford Aspire
