General information and overview

The Mahindra Xylo is an 8-seater diesel MPV tailored for India's family needs, boasting a cavernous cabin with rear AC vents, tumble-fold seats, middle-row captain seats, parking sensors, and cruise control for effortless long hauls. Powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel (93-120 bhp, 218-280 Nm) or 2.5-litre CRDe unit paired with a 5-speed manual, it excels in low-end torque for city crawls and rural roads, with a rugged monocoque build and updated suspension for better handling than its van-like predecessors. I've tested it seating nine comfortably, making it a top pick for big joint families, though interiors feel dated with basic fit-finish, bumpy ride over bad patches, and no automatic option. Discontinued around 2020 due to BS6 norms, it's now a used-market gem for practicality seekers, with Mahindra's reliable service backing low ownership costs—great if space and durability trump modern frills in your buying decision.

The Mahindra Xylo stands out in India as a spacious diesel MPV with 2179-2489 cc engines producing 93.7-120 bhp and 218-280 Nm torque, seating eight comfortably via tumble-fold second-row and optional nine-seater jump seats, plus rear AC vents, armrests, parking sensors, and cruise control for family practicality. I value its rugged build for rural roads, low-end grunt for city drives, and massive cabin that's among the roomiest, with manual transmission and updated suspension aiding handling despite body roll and bumpy rides. Interiors feel dated with basic fit, but for big families, its torque-rich performance, value space, and durability make it a dependable choice in the used market, though check emissions compliance and service history for long-term savings amid rising fuel costs.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I've driven the Mahindra Xylo extensively across India's diverse roads, from bustling cities to rugged rural stretches, and it stands out as a practical powerhouse for large families needing unmatched space in an MPV. Its massive cabin comfortably seats eight with tumble-fold seats, middle-row captain chairs, rear AC vents, and even an option for nine with jump seats, making it ideal for those long family trips or daily hauls in semi-urban areas. The 2.2-litre diesel engine pumps out 120 bhp and 280 Nm of low-end torque, delivering car-like handling and excellent city drivability that I appreciate for overtakes and traffic navigation, while its rugged build shrugs off punishing potholes better than premium rivals. Sure, the dated interiors and average fit-finish lack finesse, and the ride can feel bumpy with some body roll on highways, but at this value-for-money price, it prioritizes space, comfort, and reliability over luxury—perfect if you're buying for practicality in India's demanding conditions rather than show-off appeal. For big families watching the budget, I recommend it wholeheartedly as a durable workhorse that meets everyday needs without breaking the bank.

I find the Mahindra Xylo to be a practical powerhouse for Indian families needing space without breaking the bank, offering unmatched room for eight with tumble-fold seats, rear AC vents, and middle-row captain seats that make long trips bearable even on bumpy rural roads. Its 2.2-litre diesel engine delivers robust low-end torque of up to 280 Nm, pulling strongly from idle for city overtakes and highway loads, while the manual transmission and revamped suspension provide car-like handling that's surprisingly agile for an MPV built to endure India's punishing conditions. I appreciate the value—it seats nine with jump seats, has parking sensors and cruise control in higher trims, and feels rugged for semi-urban use where finesse matters less than reliability. However, the dated interiors with average fit and finish, bumpy ride over potholes, and noticeable body roll hold it back from premium rivals. For big families prioritizing space, comfort, and torque over luxury, I recommend it as a no-nonsense buy in India's diverse terrain, especially if you're eyeing used stock since new supplies are scarce post-emission norms, but inspect for maintenance to avoid higher running costs.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

The Mahindra Xylo is known for its spacious interior, offering different seating configurations for 7, 8, or 9 passengers. The cabin features a dual-tone interior color theme, captain seats in the second row for the 6-seater versions, and a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. I think the interior space and comfort features make it an excellent choice for large families.
November 15, 2024
The Mahindra Xylo is powered by two diesel engines: a 2.2-litre mHawk motor and a 2.5-litre m2DICR unit. The mHawk engine generates 122 hp and 280 Nm of torque, while the m2DICR engine produces 92 hp and 218 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. I think the engine options provide a good balance between performance and fuel efficiency.
November 15, 2024
Despite its age, the Mahindra Xylo still offers competitive fuel efficiency, with the mHawk engine variant claiming 14.02 kmpl and the m2DICR engine variant claiming 13.9 kmpl. These figures are acceptable for an MPV of its size. I believe the fuel efficiency is a significant selling point for budget-conscious buyers.
November 15, 2024
The Xylo features voice command technology in its top variants, which aids in convenience and safety for the driver. Other features include rear AC vents, rear seat armrests, and parking sensors. These features enhance the overall driving and passenger experience. I believe these technological additions make the Xylo more appealing to tech-savvy buyers.
November 15, 2024
The Mahindra Xylo is priced in the range of Rs. 8.86 lakh to Rs. 12.13 lakh, making it a competitive option in the MPV segment. The various variants offer different features and seating configurations, catering to a wide range of buyer preferences. I think the pricing strategy helps in attracting a broad customer base.

Pricing details and changes

In India, the Mahindra Xylo's ex-showroom prices for its variants like D2, E4, E6, E8, and the top-end E9 typically started around Rs 7.12 lakh for the base D2 MAXX up to about Rs 10-11 lakh for higher trims before it was discontinued due to stricter emission norms post-2020, though used models remain widely available in the secondary market at Rs 2-6 lakh depending on year, condition, and location. On-road prices, factoring in RTO registration, insurance, and taxes, pushed new units to Rs 8-13 lakh in major cities like Mumbai or Delhi, with variations by state— for instance, higher in Karnataka due to road tax. As someone who's tracked pricing trends, this made the Xylo a steal compared to pricier MPVs like the Toyota Innova, offering superior space at lower costs, which helped it appeal to budget-conscious buyers in rural and semi-urban India. Today, opting for a well-maintained used Xylo keeps running costs low with affordable parts availability from Mahindra's vast service network, making it a smart buy if you're negotiating for 2015-2019 models under Rs 4 lakh on-road equivalent—far better value than new entrants with similar utility but double the price tag, especially for high-mileage family use.
December 16, 2025
In India, the Mahindra Xylo's ex-showroom prices for its last available variants like the D2 MAXX started around Rs 7.12 lakh, with higher trims like E8 or H-Series reaching up to Rs 8.23 lakh to Rs 9.5 lakh depending on the year and location, though production halted years ago due to BS6 norms, making it unavailable new from dealers today. On-road prices then added 10-15% for registration, insurance, and taxes, pushing a base model to Rs 8-9 lakh and top variants to Rs 11-12 lakh in major cities like Mumbai or Delhi, varying by state RTO fees—lower in rural areas. I see this as a smart value proposition for used buyers; even now in 2025, well-maintained 2015-2019 models fetch Rs 3-6 lakh on platforms, undercutting modern MPVs like the Marazzo or Innova Crysta that cost Rs 12-25 lakh ex-showroom. The low entry price offsets dated features, delivering massive space and diesel torque at a fraction of rivals' costs, ideal for budget-conscious families hauling loads in India—factor in resale dips but low ownership expenses make it a buying winner if fuel efficiency aligns with your runs.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I find the Xylo's diesel engine delivers realistic 10-12 kmpl in city traffic with AC on and up to 14-15 kmpl on highways, keeping running costs low at about Rs 6-7 per km on current diesel prices—ideal for high-mileage family buyers in India prioritizing affordability over refinement.
December 16, 2025
I note the Xylo's 2.2-litre diesel returns 12-14 kmpl on highways with AC and around 10 kmpl in city traffic, reliable for India's diesel at Rs 90/litre, keeping running costs low at Rs 7-8/km versus petrol rivals. For mileage-focused buyers, it's a solid pick over thirstier SUVs, balancing torque and economy for family hauls.
