Hyundai i10 Grand (2018)
General information and overview
The Hyundai Grand i10 (2018) is a premium hatchback powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox. It boasts a spacious and well-appointed cabin, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless phone charging in higher trims, rear AC vents, and a dual-tone interior that enhances the overall ambience. The ride quality is tuned for comfort with soft suspension absorbent to typical city road undulations, while the engine delivers smooth and linear power ideal for stop-and-go traffic. Safety features include ABS with EBD and dual airbags as standard on automatic variants from 2018 onwards. Though it lacks some modern safety aids like electronic stability control, the Grand i10 scores well on practicality, ease of driving, and feature set for its price bracket. It remains a popular option in India for buyers looking for a compact, comfortable, and reliable vehicle for everyday use.
The 2018 Hyundai Grand i10 combines a 1.2-litre petrol engine tuned for smoothness and efficiency with a 4-speed automatic transmission that offers seamless shifts and minimal jerks, making it an excellent urban commuter. It features a spacious cabin with supportive seats, adjustable rear AC vents, and a well-designed dashboard that includes a touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (wired). The exterior design is contemporary with sporty elements like chrome-lined fog lamps and a neat revised bumper. Safety is addressed through multiple airbags and stable handling dynamics. While space and ride comfort suit most daily needs, the rear seat lacks adjustable headrests, which could affect long-distance comfort. From maneuverability to premium interior touches, the Grand i10 caters to buyers seeking a practical yet refined hatchback for Indian city and highway use.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Hyundai Grand i10 (2018) strikes a solid balance between comfort, features, and city-friendly performance, making it a reliable choice for daily commuting and small families in India. The 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers smooth and linear acceleration suitable for urban traffic conditions, with a suspension setup that absorbs most road imperfections well, ensuring a comfortable ride. The cabin is spacious and well laid out, featuring a refined interior with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus rear AC vents for added comfort. While not the most powerful car in its segment, it offers a relaxed drive with light steering, making city driving hassle-free. Some minor drawbacks include integrated front seat headrests limiting adjustability and a slightly stiff rear suspension over bad potholes. Overall, it’s a well-rounded hatchback that prioritizes convenience and comfort over outright sportiness, suitable for buyers prioritizing ease of driving and interior quality for everyday use in Indian cities.
The Hyundai Grand i10 (2018) stands out as a well-rounded hatchback that offers a comfortable and spacious cabin along with smooth engine performance, making it ideal for city driving and short highway trips. Its linear acceleration and refined automatic transmission make driving effortless and relaxed, even in stop-and-go traffic. I appreciate its ride quality, which handles urban road imperfections well while maintaining stability during faster highway drives. The light steering and compact footprint contribute to excellent maneuverability in congested city conditions. Features such as rear AC vents and a user-friendly touchscreen infotainment system enhance convenience, though the lack of adjustable rear headrests and some minor compromises in rear seat comfort could be noticeable on longer journeys. Overall, the Grand i10 balances practicality, comfort, and driveability effectively, making it a dependable choice for buyers prioritizing ease of use, interior quality, and value for money in an urban setting.
Recent news and announcements
In July 2019, Hyundai launched the Grand i10 Cargo panel van in South Africa, but for the Indian market, the Grand i10 continued to be a popular choice. The 2018 model in India saw no such cargo variant, but it did offer a spacious 256-liter luggage compartment that could be expanded to 1,202 liters with the rear seats folded down. This made it a favorite among those needing ample storage space. I think this feature really sets it apart in its segment.
By September 2018, Hyundai updated the Grand i10 with significant safety features, including airbags and ABS as standard across all variants. This move was part of Hyundais effort to enhance safety standards in their vehicles, especially in the wake of stricter safety regulations in India. This update made the Grand i10 a more appealing option for safety-conscious buyers.
In July 2018, the facelifted Grand i10 was noted for its improved exterior design, featuring a new cascade effect grille and LED daytime running lights integrated into the fog lamp housing. These aesthetic changes gave the car a fresh and modern look. The chrome strip below the bonnet also got a slight upward curl, adding to the cars visual appeal.
Around the same time, the 2018 Hyundai Grand i10 Asta Petrol was praised for its comfortable interior, particularly the rear seat with adjustable headrests and decent under-thigh support. However, the middle seatbelt being untethered was a minor drawback. The cars overall comfort and spaciousness made it a great option for family use. I believe the rear seat comfort is one of the best in its class.
In April 2018, there was speculation about the possible addition of Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) to the Grand i10, although this was not immediately confirmed by Hyundai. This potential update would have further enhanced the vehicles safety features.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the Hyundai Grand i10 (2018) was priced approximately between Rs 4.98 lakh to Rs 6.5 lakh ex-showroom Delhi depending on the variant and fuel option. On-road prices vary across cities due to taxes and insurance but typically fall in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh. Variants like the Asta petrol with more features cost towards the higher end. Considering the features and refinement offered, its pricing was competitive in the premium hatchback segment against rivals like the Maruti Swift and Tata Tiago. The automatic variants commanded a slight premium due to the convenience offered by the 4-speed torque converter gearbox, although this transmission is somewhat outdated compared to rival CVTs and AMTs. Given its spacious interiors and feature-rich cabin, the Grand i10 presented good value for customers seeking comfort and equipment without a hefty price tag, especially in urban markets where brand reliability and service network of Hyundai add to the ownership confidence.
In India, the ex-showroom price of the 2018 Hyundai Grand i10 Kappa Sportz 1.2L Automatic petrol variant typically ranged around ₹7.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh depending on the city. The on-road price, including registration, insurance, and taxes, generally comes to approximately ₹8.5 lakh to ₹9.2 lakh in metropolitan cities like Delhi or Mumbai. Considering the features and build quality offered, this pricing positions the Grand i10 competitively against hatchback rivals in its segment such as the Maruti Swift or Tata Altroz. While not the cheapest option, the extra comfort, cabin refinement, and smooth transmission justify the premium. For prospective buyers, understanding these real-world costs helps set expectations about ownership expenses and financing, especially since Hyundai offers good resale value and widespread service coverage across India.
Fuel efficiency information
For mileage, the Grand i10 delivers about 16-17 kmpl in city conditions and up to 19-20 kmpl on highways for the petrol variant, which is quite efficient for a hatchback of this size and powertrain. This makes it a cost-effective choice for daily urban commutes and occasional longer drives, helping to keep running costs relatively low. Considering fuel prices and maintenance, the Grand i10 balances mileage with a smooth drive experience, appealing to buyers who prioritize economy along with comfort.
For actual mileage, the petrol variant delivers around 16-17 km/l on average in city driving and up to 19-20 km/l on highways under ideal conditions. This efficiency, combined with a refined 1.2-litre engine and capable automatic transmission, ensures decent running costs. If mileage is a key factor in your decision, the Grand i10 strikes a fine balance between fuel economy and performance without compromising on drive quality.
