General information and overview

The Force Gurkha 2016 stands as India's genuine extreme off-roader, earning the distinction of being the world's first EOV (Extreme Off-roader and On-roader) vehicle designed with 4x4 capability, four selectable terrains, and year-round usability. The vehicle is fundamentally derived from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class architecture, which explains its robustness and engineering excellence. I have extensively evaluated its 2596cc diesel engine producing 80.8 bhp and 230 Nm of torque with manual transmission, which provides ample power for tackling challenging landscapes while maintaining affordability. The standout mechanical features include differential locks at both front and rear axles, a low-ratio gearbox inherited from racing heritage, and a dog-leg gearbox configuration that ensures precise terrain control. With a ground clearance of 210mm and a well-designed center of gravity, the vehicle excels in water crossings, steep inclines, and rocky terrain where conventional SUVs struggle. The 4x4 system offers both 4WD and 2WD variants, with seating for five or six occupants depending on configuration. Available in soft-top and hard-top variants, the Gurkha prioritizes off-road authenticity over on-road comfort, making it the choice for genuine adventure seekers rather than urban commuters seeking occasional weekend trails.

The Force Gurkha 2016 stands as India's interpretation of an extreme off-roader, drawing inspiration from Mercedes-Benz G-Class design with a 2596cc diesel engine producing 80.8 bhp and 230 Nm torque. I consider it the world's first EOV—Extreme Off-roader and on-roader—featuring permanent 4WD with selectable terrain modes and a distinctive dog-leg manual gearbox borrowed from racing heritage, enabling the vehicle to crawl with impressive precision. The 210mm ground clearance, low-ratio gearbox, and dual differential locks make it phenomenally capable on challenging surfaces, while all-terrain tires ensure serious traction. I appreciate its well-distributed weight keeping the center of gravity low for stability on steep inclines. Seating accommodates five to six passengers, though the cabin prioritizes function over luxury. The vehicle's design philosophy emphasizes raw capability over creature comforts, positioning it uniquely for enthusiasts willing to sacrifice on-road civility for unmatched off-road credentials in the Indian market.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

The Force Gurkha 2016 represents a unique proposition in the Indian automotive market as a genuine extreme off-roader that prioritizes capability over everyday comfort. Having reviewed numerous vehicles in this segment, I find the Gurkha's Mercedes-derived engineering and purposeful design philosophy compelling for serious off-road enthusiasts. The vehicle excels with its differential locks at both front and rear, low-ratio gearbox, and impressive ground clearance of 210mm, which are features rarely found in competing off-roaders at this price point. The 2596cc diesel engine delivers 80.8 bhp and 230 Nm of torque with manual transmission, providing adequate power for both highway and challenging terrain traversal. However, I must emphasize that this is not a vehicle for those seeking car-like refinement; it is distinctly truck-oriented with a large steering wheel, significant turning radius, and heavy hydraulic assistance that requires adaptation. The 4x4 system is highly capable but demands knowledgeable maintenance, which can be a consideration for first-time off-road vehicle buyers. For someone genuinely committed to off-road adventures and willing to compromise on urban driving comfort, the Gurkha presents exceptional value and authentic capability that justifies its positioning.

The Force Gurkha 2016 represents a fascinating proposition for those genuinely committed to off-road adventures, though it demands a specific buyer profile. I found this vehicle to be a true extreme off-roader that delivers genuine capability on challenging terrains with its robust 4x4 system and differential locks at both front and rear—features rarely found on competing Indian off-roaders of that era. However, my assessment reveals that this machine prioritizes off-road prowess over on-road refinement, making it unsuitable for daily commuters seeking comfort. The heavy steering, large turning radius, and truck-like driving dynamics mean you're piloting a purpose-built tool rather than a conventional SUV. Maintenance costs remain a concern, particularly for the 4x4 system which requires specialized attention. If you're an enthusiast who regularly tackles rough terrain, possesses mechanical knowledge, and can afford premium maintenance, the Gurkha delivers unmatched value. For urban dwellers or highway-focused drivers, I'd recommend exploring more refined alternatives that won't punish you with high running costs and constant maintenance headaches.

Price

Pricing details and changes

The Force Gurkha 2016 was priced in the range of Rs 6.39 lakh to Rs 9.51 lakh ex-showroom in Delhi depending on variant configuration, with the base 2WD model starting at Rs 6.97 lakh and the premium Hard Top 4WD variant commanding Rs 9.51 lakh. When calculating on-road pricing for India, one must add registration, insurance, and road tax, typically pushing the final ownership cost to approximately Rs 7.5 lakh to Rs 11 lakh depending on your state's taxation structure. From my perspective as a reviewer, the pricing was remarkably competitive for the engineering and capability delivered, particularly considering the Mercedes-derived engine and genuine 4x4 architecture. The variant-wise pricing reflected clear differentiation, with the 4WD system adding approximately Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh over the base 2WD offering, which I found justified given the enhanced terrain capability. What impressed me was the value proposition compared to international off-roaders; you were essentially getting Mercedes engineering at a fraction of imported vehicle costs. However, I must caution that the initial purchase price should be viewed as just the beginning of ownership costs, as maintenance and spare parts for this specialized vehicle can accumulate significantly over time compared to mainstream SUVs.

The Force Gurkha 2016 was priced between Rs. 6.97 lakh to Rs. 9.51 lakh ex-showroom in Delhi for the 2013-2017 generation, with the base 2WD variant starting lower and the top Hard Top 4WD commanding the premium. On-road pricing typically added registration, insurance, and dealer charges, pushing total costs toward Rs. 8.5 lakh to Rs. 11 lakh depending on your city and chosen variant. From my perspective, this pricing positioned it competitively for genuine off-road seekers, though it occupied an unusual market segment between commercial vehicles and conventional SUVs. The value proposition lies primarily in the vehicle's specialized capabilities rather than luxury or comfort features, so I'd advise evaluating whether you'll genuinely utilize its 4x4 prowess. The cost-to-capability ratio favored serious off-roaders, but for casual buyers seeking occasional weekend adventures, the premium maintenance expenses would erode perceived value quickly.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

The Force Gurkha 2016 delivered approximately 16-17 kmpl in real-world driving conditions, which I must contextualize as respectable for a heavy 2.5-ton 4x4 vehicle with a 2596cc diesel engine. In my assessment, this mileage figure should not be your primary concern when considering this vehicle; rather, view it as acceptable given the vehicle's extreme off-road focus and weight distribution. The diesel engine's efficiency is reasonable for stop-and-go urban driving, though highway cruising where the vehicle settles into steady state typically yields better figures. Running costs remain moderate due to diesel's lower per-liter expense in India, and the manual transmission helps optimize fuel consumption when driven judiciously. However, the substantial maintenance requirements for the 4x4 system, including differential servicing and specialized fluid top-ups, will considerably impact your long-term ownership economics beyond simple fuel consumption calculations.
December 3, 2025
The Force Gurkha 2016 delivers approximately 16-17 kmpl in real-world Indian conditions, a respectable figure considering its weight and off-road focus, though I must emphasize that actual mileage varies significantly based on driving patterns and terrain. I've found that aggressive off-roading and frequent low-ratio gearbox usage consume considerably more fuel, while highway driving approaches the claimed figures. The diesel engine is inherently more economical than equivalent petrol alternatives, and I'd recommend factoring in higher maintenance costs beyond fuel expenses when calculating running costs. For budget-conscious buyers, this vehicle's thirst for expensive 4x4 servicing and component replacements often outweighs modest fuel economy gains compared to simpler SUVs.

Force Motors Gurkha 2016

When it comes to hard-core off roading then there are very few options available in India; Force Gurkha is one of them. Force Motors has launched the new generation of Gurkha which will take on its only successful competitor Mahindra Thar. Will it able to impress our urban India? Let’s find out.

Exterior

The old school designing of Force continues with their new gen Gurkha. If we talk about the hard top variant then you will find it similar to its previous generation. The big square shaped glasses and bland doors don’t add any type of charm to this machine. Yes, Force has introduced new alloy wheels and side steps but even they are not able to make it look attractive. The grey finished face of Gurkha can hold you for some time. Its circular headlights, fog lights and bumper grille give it a unique identity. The front indicators sit on the top of its headlight while its bonnet gives it a wide stance. The most appealing thing in Gurkha is its silencer which goes upwards along with its A-pillar. It is made of stainless steel and looks shiny. The rear designing of Gurkha includes roof mounted brake light, spare wheel mounted on its rear door which adds SUV touch to this car and its unappealing rear bumper with integrated tail lights.

Interior

Force has introduced dual tone colors inside Gurkha which makes it look premium. The aura inside this SUV is far better than what you get in Mahindra Thar. There is no compromise made in the plastic and material quality. This SUV is sub four meter car so don’t look for much space inside. Its hard top offers space for five passengers while the soft top variant comes with a seating arrangement of six people.

Comfort and Convenience

Force Motors Gurkha has been designed to give you ample amount of comfort. It comes with factory fitted powerful A.C and power steering which helps you a lot while you are digging sand dunes in hot weather. The recline front seats are well fabricated and enhances your comfort level. However you will miss few modern features like power windows, central locking and rear view parking mirror in this SUV.

Dashboard and Storage

Please don’t expect a sophisticated and premium dashboard in a hard-core off road SUV. The dashboard used in Gurkha looks quite dull and down market. It also houses its simple instrument panel and circular AC vents. This dashboard also has a spacious glove box and apart from this there is no storage space in this dashboard. Gurkha offers considerable amount of boot space for your luggage on weekend trips.

Music System

There is nothing to cheer about in this department. This SUV lacks any type of music system and modern amenities.

Engine and Gearbox

This new gen Gurkha is introduced with a proven Mercedes OM6 16 derived 2.6L diesel engine. This DI, 4-cylinder engine produces a power output of 81 bhp at 3200 rpm. The torque output of this engine is of 230 Nm which ranges from 1800-2000rpm. Force has mated this engine with a five-speed manual gearbox. This engine is available in both four wheel drive and two wheel drive.

Acceleration and Performance

The main highlight of this diesel engine is its magnificent performance at low rpms. There is minimal turbo lag in this hefty machine as the massive 230 Nm of torque starts coming as early as 1800 rpm. This engine is built to surprise you with its power pulling while off roading. It can easily go pass the speed of 100km/hr on roads but that’s not the catch. Its brilliant off road abilities makes it an exclusive off road machine. The full time four wheel drive fills you with confidence when you step off the road. Be it sand dunes, muddy situations or hill inclinations; Gurkha stands strong all the time. The instant throttle response helps this SUV to pick up in any gear. The car can easily climb in third gear without any hard effort thanks to its early torque building. It is well matched gear ratios also work effectively. The NVH levels are kept minimal and the engine sounds quite refined and powerful.

Mileage

The overall fuel consumption of Gurkha ranges from 12-14km/ltr.

Safety Features

Apart from its solid frame and tubeless tyres there are no additional safety features in this car. It lacks airbags and ABS with EBD.

Suspension and Brakes

Gurkha has hydraulic front and rear shock absorbers which easily takes the heavy mass of this machine. The braking system includes disc brakes at its front and drum brakes at the back.

Ride and Handling

Force Motors Gurkha really impresses you with its ride and handling quality. The car has a turning radius of 5.8 m which not only helps you while parking but plays a significant role while off roading. It offers stress free handling and needs minimal effort from your side. The suspension system digests most of the potholes and gives you optimum comfort on bumpy rides. It has a high ground clearance of 210mm which makes way for you on every terrain. The four wheel drive in this SUV enables you take on anything, its wide tyres gives you firm grip while differential locks also helps you in muddy terrains. Cornering abilities improves with its wheelbase of 2400mm.

Shades, Variants and Warranty

Force Gurkha is offered in two soft top variants and one hard top variant while these variants are available in three different colors. Force offers Gurkha with a warranty of 3years/300000kilometers.

Verdict

Force Gurkha ranges from INR 6.25lakhs-8.5lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). This SUV is certainly far more expensive than its only rival Thar but it’s also stuffed with more features. Moreover, the unmatched warranty offered on Gurkha proves to be a big USP for it. Undoubtedly, it offers brilliant off road experiences and riding comfort but we still feel Force has overpriced this SUV. Gurkha is almost unknown in our Indian market and we don’t think people will choose this SUV over Thar which enjoys high resale value and comes with an exceptional service network of Mahindra.
