Datsun GO
General information and overview
The Datsun GO is a compact hatchback powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 68 PS and 104 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The design is modern and fresh, featuring a bold front grille, halogen headlamps, and alloy wheels that enhance its urban appeal. Inside, the cabin offers a spacious feel unheard of in the entry-level segment, with improved seating comfort, a simple yet practical dashboard, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The boot space of 265 liters is generous for this category, suitable for weekend luggage or grocery runs. On the safety front, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and vehicle dynamic control on higher variants improve occupant protection significantly. The suspension is tuned more towards comfort on Indian roads, though it feels less composed at expressway speeds. Overall, it is a no-frills, value-driven package best suited for urban commuters who need economy and practicality.
The Datsun GO is a compact hatchback powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine producing around 68 PS and 104 Nm torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. It features a spacious and practical cabin with seating for five, good legroom, and a boot capacity of 265 litres, suitable for small families and urban users. The 2023-25 versions come with modern amenities including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, manual air conditioning, steering-mounted controls, and improved fabric upholstery. Safety is enhanced with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and in higher variants, vehicle dynamics control (ESC). The GO’s suspension is tuned for comfort on Indian roads, offering a compliant ride in city conditions but a slightly less assured feel on highways. Although its build quality and NVH improvements are noticeable, the Datsun GO retains a basic yet functional approach. Its attractive pricing and fuel efficiency make it a practical choice for budget-conscious buyers, but limited brand support in India may be a factor to consider.
Expert opinion and recommendation
The Datsun GO is a practical, budget-friendly hatchback that makes sense for city driving in India due to its compact dimensions, ease of parking, and fuel efficiency. I find the cabin surprisingly roomy and comfortable for the segment, with thoughtful touches like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The suspension setup is well-tuned for the typical pothole-ridden urban roads, though at higher speeds the ride can feel floaty, and NVH levels, while improved, still leave something to be desired. Safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors enhance its appeal, offering notable improvements over earlier versions. However, the build quality and material refinement still reflect its budget origins, and the steering lacks sharpness at high speeds. Overall, for buyers prioritizing affordability, practicality, and basic modern features in city conditions, the Datsun GO is a compelling choice, especially if you want a spacious small car with good tech for the price.
The Datsun GO offers a compelling budget-friendly option for Indian urban drivers looking for a practical and spacious hatchback. Its compact dimensions make it easy to maneuver in congested city traffic and tight parking spots. The recent updates have significantly improved cabin quality, NVH levels, and safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors, making it a more confident daily driver. The 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers adequate power and decent refinement, although it lacks the polish of some rivals and shows vibrations typical of a 3-cylinder unit. The ride is comfortable for city roads but can feel floaty on highways. The 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay adds modern connectivity. However, the basic interior materials, limited second-row storage, and relatively poor noise insulation remain drawbacks. Given the brand's exit from India, considerations around service and parts availability should factor into the buying decision. Overall, for those prioritizing affordability, simplicity, and fuel efficiency over premium finish and performance, the Datsun GO remains a sensible choice in its segment.
Recent news and announcements
Datsun has released a teaser image of the updated redi-GO hatchback, but its important to note that the Datsun GO and GO+ have also seen recent updates. The 2018 models of the GO and GO+ received styling tweaks and improved interiors. The GO hatchback also gained a CVT gearbox, enhancing its transmission options. I think this move will make the GO more appealing to a wider audience.
The Datsun GO and GO+ have been enhanced with safety features such as ABS across all variants, and the driver-side airbag is now available on the range-topping trim. Additional features like seatbelt reminders, high-speed warnings, and rear parking sensors are expected to be added soon. This focus on safety is a positive step for Datsun.
Datsun India has updated the GO and GO+ with more advanced specs and vintage style, making them appealing to both young independents and families. The GO offers a quality entry-level vehicle, while the GO+ provides extra space as a 7-seater MPV. I believe these updates will help Datsun maintain its market presence.
The Datsun GO is known for its reliability, backed by over a century of automotive expertise from Nissan. It comes with a 3-year/100,000 km manufacturers warranty and an optional service plan. This reliability, combined with low service costs and fuel consumption, makes the GO a cost-effective choice.
Nissan Motor India has introduced subscription plans for Datsun cars, including the GO, in partnership with Orix. This move is expected to make owning a Datsun more accessible and flexible for consumers. I think this could be a game-changer for those who prefer not to commit to full ownership.
Pricing details and changes
In India, the Datsun GO is available starting roughly at Rs 3.2 to 4 lakh ex-showroom pricing in cities like New Delhi, positioning it as an extremely affordable hatchback option. On-road prices, factoring in taxes, insurance, and registration, typically push this figure closer to Rs 3.7 to 4.5 lakh depending on the location and variant. This pricing makes it accessible for first-time car buyers or urban commuters seeking basic transportation without premium features. However, with the Datsun brand’s winding down in India, potential buyers should consider the implications of service network shrinkage and future resale value. The competitively low price tags aim to offset these concerns, but one should weigh long-term ownership costs carefully. The GO's appeal lies in its value-for-money proposition, but keep in mind that for slightly more, rivals might offer better refinement and brand support.
In India, the Datsun GO is priced starting at around Rs 3.26 lakh ex-showroom for the base variant in major cities like New Delhi. On-road prices vary depending on the city and additional costs such as RTO registration, insurance, and handling charges, typically pushing the on-road cost to roughly Rs 3.7-3.9 lakh in metro areas. Higher variants with extra features like touchscreen infotainment and safety tech commands a premium but still remain under Rs 4.5 lakh ex-showroom. This aggressive pricing positions the GO as one of the most affordable options in the segment, appealing directly to first-time buyers and budget-conscious customers. While the low initial cost is attractive, I would advise factoring in the long-term running costs and potential challenges due to Datsun’s diminished presence in India. Despite that, its value-for-money proposition, especially with the inclusion of modern features and updated safety kit, gives it a competitive edge against similarly priced rivals in the entry-level hatchback space.
Fuel efficiency information
The 1.2-liter petrol engine in the Datsun GO delivers around 18 to 19 km/l under mixed driving conditions, making it one of the more fuel-efficient choices in its segment. This kind of mileage translates to low running costs, which is crucial for daily city commuters and budget-conscious buyers focused on long-term affordability. If mileage is a top priority, the GO provides decent fuel economy without compromising basic drivability.
The Datsun GO’s 1.2-litre petrol engine delivers a mileage of approximately 18 to 19 km/l in typical mixed city and highway use, which is very competitive and keeps running costs low. This fuel efficiency makes the GO a highly economical choice for daily commuting and long-term ownership, especially in India where fuel prices are a major consideration. If mileage and low operating costs are priorities, the GO remains a strong contender.

It will be priced below INR 4lakhs and thus compete with Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Hyundai Eon and will be manufactured in India at Renault-Nissan's Chennai production facility. It is likely that Nissan will discontinue Micra Active after the launch of Datsun GO.

The interior of this hatchback is also very spacious and comfortable with dual toned beige, adjustable seats, rear seat belts, silvered over dash buttons, a mobile docking system for smartphones, big parcel shelf under the dash and full sized bottles in door pads for storage space, door handles and air con vents from Micra, power steering, all four power windows, a powerful AC, cleverly arranged gear lever and handbrake on the dashboard to free up a lot of space between the front seats, large space with great legroom for all the five passengers and more space can be made by folding the rear seats.
Music System of Datsun GO
Datsun GO's top model will come equipped with a factory-fitted dash-integrated music system to keep you fully entertained on your journey. It will also feature a smartphone holder to connect your mobile phone to the music system.
Dashboard
The dashboard is quite interesting. What you get is a dash-mounted gear box which is very comfortable to use. What you don’t get is a glove box; yes there is no glove box in the Datsun GO. Instead you have a deep storage area on the left of the centre console to keep your stuff. There is also a shallow storage area on the left side of the AC vents. The placement of gearbox on the dash has cleared the space in centre and Datsun has placed a cushioned seat which can be used by kids. The steering wheel is very simple yet stylish which huge Datsun logo in centre.
Engine and Gearbox
It will be powered by the same 1198cc, 1.2L, three cylinder, twelve valve, DOHC based Petrol engine with the maximum power of 75 bhp and with the maximum torque of 104 Nm and will be mated with a five speed manual gearbox transmission. But this engine might be de-tune to provide a better fuel economy than Micra. There will also be some safety features which are not yet released.

Suspension and Brakes
Datsun GO is expected to feature the same suspension set-up like the Nissan Micra - McPherson Strut up-front and Torsion Beam at the rear. As far as brakes are concerned it will feature disc brakes at front and rear drum brakes.
Expected Variants
It is expected to be available in at least three variants: base, mid-spec and top. The base variant will be very basic with only a few features like power steering, body coloured bumpers and small wheel covers. In addition to these features the mid-spec variant will also feature an air-conditioner, manual central locking, better seat upholstery and basic music system. In addition to all these features, the top variant of Datsun GO is expected to come fully loaded with power windows, alloy wheels, remote central locking and high-end music system with mobile phone holder.

Verdict
Overall, Datsun GO seems like a perfect blend of luxury, space, power, fuel economy, comfort and price and the only thing that may get in its way is to gain the trust of Indian customers who chooses very carefully.
About Datsun
Datsun is an automobile brand of Japan that once was one of the biggest manufacturers of cars and light trucks. Its name was created in 1931 for a new model of car by DAT Motorcar Co. spelled as 'Datson'. While many people says otherwise, but originally, before the Datsun brand name was not even came to the ears of local folk, a DAT car was built by Kaishinsha Motorcar Works in the Azabu-Hiroo district of Tokyo, Japan in 1914. DAT was an acronym of this company's partner's surnames, D from Kenjiro 'D'en, A from Rokuro 'A'oyama and T from Meitaro 'T'akeuchi. While the originator of this company was the founder of Japanese Automobile Industry, Masujiro Hashimoto and he started Kaishinsha Motorcar Works in 1911. It was renamed as Kaishinsha Motorcar Co. in 1918 and to DAT Motorcar Co. in 1925. In starting, they only made military trucks.
In 1920, after the end of World War I, the military market goes extremely slow and the company thought about merging with another industry. Thus in 1926, it is merged with the Osaka based Jitsuyo Jidosha Co. Ltd.(or Jitsuyo Motors) and became DAT Automobile Manufacturing Co. Ltd. until 1932 in Osaka. In 1930, because of a new bill by Japanese government, they began developing 495cc cars (smaller than earlier cars), thus got the name DATSON (means Son of DAT). In the summer of 1931, they made their first DATSON and sold almost 10 Datson Type 10 by the end of 1931. In 1932 this car was renamed as DATSON Type 11 and was sold to 150 customers. In 1933, when government allows 750cc engines, DATSON increases its engine too and was called a Type 12. In 1934, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. took control of DAT Motorcar Co. and its last syllable was changed from SON (Loss) to SUN in the honour of the existence of sun in national flag of Japan.
By 1935, they made some extremely beautiful looking cars almost resembling Austin 7 and exported almost six of these to New Zealand in 1936. After the fierce battle with China, they much halted work of manufacturing cars started again and now they based their cars mostly on Devon and Somerset. But in 1955, they introduced their first ever indigenous cars, 110 saloon and 110 based 120 pickup. Nissan entered in American market with the name of Datsun. They produced some all-time favourites cars of that time such as 510, Fairlady roadsters, Fairlady 240Z coupes etc. But by March 1983, Nissan phased out the Datsun name from its cars due to increasing competition in world market and made their move towards dominion with the name of Nissan only. On March 20, 2012 Nissan announced to again manufacture the Datsun for selling in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa by 2014. The platform and engineering for Datsun cars now will be provided by a Renault-Nissan alliance controlled firm, AvtoVAZ and these cars will be based on Lada Kalina and Lada Granta.
The corporate vice president and global head of the Datsun Business Unit, Vincent Cobee found stated that they wanted this brand to once again resonates with the customers of high-growth markets who wants style, quality, durability, reliability, authenticity, an accessible price and a legitimate driving experience and will make a connection that created wonders for the company years ago. On January 30, 2013, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced TBWA Worldwide as the global agency of record for the Datsun brand which will set up a dedicated and imaginative Datsun team to run strategic and creative operations from London. The Datsun team in Japan will be supported operationally by TBWA Worldwide's Tokyo affiliate, TBWA HAKUHODO. TBWA Worlwide's President and CEO, Tom Carell stated that it will be an honour to again attract these rising markets towards such an iconic brand and will work hard to bring this heritage forward.
