Megapixel is a much hyped project from Tata which has been specifically conceived for the European markets. It’s a futuristic car from Tata which is an advanced version of their small car Pixel which is based on our Indian Nano. What makes this car so special? Let’s check out.
Exterior
It’s a complete in house project from Tata which has been designed by their European design studios. Unveiled at the Good wood festival of speed in UK, Megapixel looks more like a production ready car rather than a concept. The practical designing of this compact hatch is really commendable. The car doesn’t features scissor doors similar to its younger sibling pixel. Instead, it comes with double sliding doors which make it easy for you to go in/out of the car and they look quite attractive also. The single piece face of Megapixel features angular headlights on both sides which gel well with the black colored radiator grille of this car. The small bonnet of this car leads to its long and wide front windshield which makes it look extremely aerodynamic. The black colored air dam of Megapixel makes it look like a typical Tata car. The bulgy wheel arches and 16 inches alloy wheels add muscularity to Megapixel. The noticeable running lines on its doors nicely merges into the boot of this car. The tall look at the back adds visual bulk to this car. The tall positioned LED tail lights of Megapixel look sporty with its C-pillar. The rear glass eats up most of the space at the back and looks nice with its bulky rear bumper which features black colored air inlets.
Interior
Tata Megapixel is likely to get dual tone interiors. The positioning of everything looks quite perfect and the cabin feels quite up-market. The floor and cabin feels quite spacious. The lack of B-pillar is the biggest reason which gives you more space inside this car. The slim seats give you optimum support and space. Megapixel is perfect for four adults. The double sliding doors not only give you easy access to this car but also improve the space inside. The panoramic roof also enlightens the mood inside and makes it look premium.
Comfort and Convenience
The production ready car is likely to have comfort features like power windows, adjustable power steering, electric ORVMs, MID, AC and star/stop button.
Dashboard and Storage
The dual tone dashboard of Megapixel will feature a big touch screen at its centre with AC vents on both sides. The instrument console and glove box will also be fitted in this dashboard. Tata may offer this car with door pockets, cubby holes and its spacious floor can also be used as a storage space. The bonnet of Megapixel is likely to act as the boot of this car similar to its younger siblings.
Music System
You can connect your smart phones with this car via hands on connectivity and get access to your online world. The integrated infotainment plus system allows you to get control over key features and entertainment system of this car.
Engine and Gearbox
Technically, Megapixel is a futuristic and advanced car. Megapixel gets four electric motors, one on each wheel. These are lithium Ion Phosphate 13KWh batteries with induction charging system. They take 30minutes to get charge up to 80%. Megapixel is also equipped with a single cylinder 325cc single cylinder petrol engine. This 4-stroke engine is low on CO2 emission and generates a peak power of 30bhp. This engine is mated with an automatic transmission.
Acceleration and Performance
You generally don’t expect power packed performance from an electric engine and things are no different with Megapixel either. The main purpose of this car is to give you low running costs and acceptable performance with its batteries. The batteries supply power and torque individually to each wheel which gives you instant throttle reactions even with full load. The petrol engine is also impressive and feels quite crispy in city traffic. The car can reach the speed of 110km/hr which is quite acceptable.
Mileage and Safety Features
The car is quite a gem in this department. Its hands free induction system helps it to charge quickly and makes it light on pocket. After full charging, the car can cover a distance of 87kilomtres and after depletion of batteries, the petrol motors kicks in with a coverage distance of more than 900kilomters. Looking at the European safety standards, Megapixel is likely to feature dual front air-bags, side impact beams and keyless entry.
Suspension and Brakes
Megapixel is likely to share its suspension system with its younger sibling, Pixel. It will feature McPherson struts at its front with independent coil spring suspension system at the back. The car might feature ventilated discs at its front or it may debut with drum brakes of 180mm on its all wheels. ABS with EBD and brake assist will further help you to stop this car accurately.
Ride and Handling
The rigid frame of Megapixel helps it stay grounded at high speeds while the all-wheel drive system makes it quite agile in terms of handling. The wide tyres provide firm grip to this car which reduces body roll around sharp corners. Megapixel shares it zero turn drive feature with Pixel which makes it one of the finest city cars available worldwide. It has a turning radius of 2.8m which makes it easy for you to park this car at tight spaces. The car can easily move through city traffic and its airy cabin also gives you good all-around visibility.
Shades, Variants and Warranty
Shades, variants and warranty are yet to be disclosed.
Verdict
Megapixel is certainly a practical hybrid car which looks stylish, offers ample amount of space and keeps your running costs minimal. The car is yet to be launched globally and there is no confirmation either if Tata will bring this car to India. In future, if this car arrives in India with a reasonable price tag unlike over-priced Mahindra Reva E2O then surely, it will prove to be a complete value for money car.
