General information and overview

The 2018 Tata Indica eV2 is a five-seater diesel hatchback with a 1.4-litre CR4 engine producing peppy performance, refined NVH, and 0-100kmph in under 15 seconds thanks to its lighter build. I appreciate its roomy cabin with shadow beige dual-tone fabrics, comfortable front seats, adjustable driver seat, and enough rear space for three adults plus a class-leading boot. Features include AC, power steering, windows, Bluetooth music system, remote locking, and fog lamps. Suspension tackles Indian roads well with dual-path fronts and semi-independent rears, while safety covers collapsible steering and beams. Priced ₹4.22-5.61 lakh ex-showroom, it excels in low-cost ownership for families or fleets, though interiors feel dated and ergonomics like high pedals could improve. For practical buying, its durability and space make it a smart, economical pick.

The 2018 Tata Indica eV2 is a compact five-seater diesel hatchback tailored for Indian roads, powered by a refined 1.4L CR4 engine offering strong low-end torque for effortless city overtakes and a lightened chassis for agile handling. I appreciate its class-leading rear space fitting three adults comfortably, huge boot surpassing Swift, and practical cabin with height-adjustable driver seat, AC, power steering, keyless entry, and Bluetooth audio. Safety includes side beams, collapsible steering, and child locks, while dual-path front suspension and semi-independent rear absorb potholes well. Though interiors show average plastics and dated looks, its durability, low service costs, and peppy performance make it a reliable daily commuter or fleet star—perfect if you prioritize economy, space, and no-fuss ownership over premium features.

Our Verdict

Expert opinion and recommendation

I've driven the Tata Indica eV2 extensively across Indian cities and highways, and it stands out as a no-nonsense workhorse for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliability over flair. The 1.4-litre CR4 diesel engine delivers punchy acceleration with 100Nm torque from 2700rpm, hitting 0-100kmph under 15 seconds, making city traffic a breeze despite its 10kg lighter kerb weight boosting the power-to-weight ratio. Spacious interiors accommodate five comfortably with ample rear legroom and a generous boot surpassing rivals like Maruti Swift, ideal for family trips or taxi use. Dual-tone beige fabric seats and a four-spoke steering add a premium touch, though rear seats lack thigh support. Ride quality from dual-path front suspension and semi-independent rear shocks handles pothole-ridden roads decently, paired with front discs and rear drums for confident braking. Safety basics like collapsible steering, side-impact beams, and child locks are present, but no ABS. At this price, its low maintenance and durable build make it a value king for daily commutes, though dated styling and average interior plastics won't wow modern tastes. If mileage and space trump refinement, I recommend it wholeheartedly for Indian conditions.

I've driven the Tata Indica eV2 extensively across Indian cities and highways, and it stands out as a no-nonsense workhorse for budget-conscious buyers seeking reliability over flair. Its lighter 10kg frame boosts the power-to-weight ratio, making the 1.4L CR4 diesel engine punchy in city traffic with 100Nm torque from 2700rpm, hitting 0-100kmph under 15 seconds while staying refined at high rpms. Spacious interiors accommodate five comfortably, with ample rear legroom for three adults and superior boot space over rivals like Maruti Swift, plus practical features like power windows, Bluetooth music system, and remote locking. Dual-tone beige cabins feel premium for the class, though rear seats lack thigh support and panel gaps persist from its era. Suspension handles Indian potholes decently with front discs and rear drums, ensuring confident braking without ABS. Low maintenance and durable build make it ideal for fleet operators or first-time owners prioritizing running costs over modern styling—it's the economical choice if you value space, peppy performance, and value-for-money in a discontinued yet sought-after 2018 hatchback.

Latest Updates

Recent news and announcements

Despite its success, the Tata Indica faced increasing competition from global automakers like Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda. By 2018, the cars sales had significantly dropped, leading to its eventual discontinuation. However, its platform continues to be used in newer models like the Tiago and Tigor. I think the Indicas impact on the Indian auto market is still felt today.
May 29, 2018
The Tata Indica played a crucial role in changing the trajectory of Tata Motors, transitioning the company from a truck maker to a serious car manufacturer. The cars success was not just about sales but also about the manufacturing and operational renaissance within the Tata group in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I believe this transformation was pivotal for Tatas future growth.
May 29, 2018
In its later years, the Tata Indica underwent several facelifts, including the Indica Vista, which was launched in 2008. These updates added new features and minor design changes but could not stem the decline in sales as newer models entered the market. The Indica Vista was priced starting from Rs. 3.88 lakhs for the petrol version.
May 29, 2018
The Tata Indica, launched in 1998, marked a significant milestone for Tata Motors as Indias first fully indigenous passenger car. Despite initial manufacturing and quality issues, the Indica became a best-seller, with over 1.4 million units sold. However, by 2018, the car was well past its prime, and sales had dwindled to double-digit figures per month. I think its legacy continues to influence Tatas current lineup.
May 28, 2018
The discontinuation of the Tata Indica was part of Tata Motors strategy to focus on newer models. Despite the Indicas historical significance, its sales had declined significantly, making it no longer viable. The company is now focusing on models like the Tiago and Tigor, which are built on a re-engineered version of the original Indica platform.

Pricing details and changes

In 2018, the Tata Indica eV2 ex-showroom price in India ranged from ₹4.22 lakh to ₹5.61 lakh depending on variants like LX or EX, making it one of the most affordable diesel hatches then. On-road prices, including registration, insurance, and taxes, pushed it to around ₹4.70 lakh to ₹6.30 lakh in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, varying by state RTO charges—typically adding 10-12% for registration and 2-3% for insurance on the ex-showroom figure. I've seen real-world deals dipping lower with negotiations or festive offers from Tata dealers. This pricing undercut competitors like Maruti Swift or Hyundai Grand i10, offering superior space and diesel torque for less. From my reviews, the low ownership costs shine through minimal servicing—often under ₹3,000 annually—and cheap spares, perfect for high-mileage users like cabbies. However, resale dips faster than Maruti due to Tata's brand perception, so factor 20-30% depreciation in three years. For budget buyers eyeing running costs over luxury, this ex-showroom sweet spot delivers unmatched bang-for-buck in India's value-driven market.

In 2018, the Tata Indica eV2 ex-showroom price in India ranged from ₹4.22 lakh to ₹5.61 lakh depending on variants like LX or eXLS, making it one of the most affordable diesel hatches then. On-road prices, including registration, insurance, and taxes, pushed it to around ₹4.70 lakh to ₹6.30 lakh in major cities like Delhi or Mumbai, varying by state RTO charges— for instance, diesel models avoided higher road tax hits compared to petrol. I recommend it for buyers eyeing low upfront costs without compromising on a 1.4L engine's power or space; its pricing undercut competitors like Swift or Grand i10, offering better boot and rear room per rupee. Today, used 2018 units trade at ₹2-3 lakh, but factor in service history for longevity. This affordability, paired with minimal ownership expenses, positions it as a smart pick for taxi drivers or families stretching budgets, though rising fuel prices slightly dent petrol appeal—opt for diesel eV2 for peak value.

Mileage

Fuel efficiency information

I find the Indica eV2's CR4 diesel delivering a real-world 15-20kmpl overall in mixed Indian conditions, with city runs at 14kmpl and highways up to 22kmpl under light loads. Petrol variants manage 14kmpl average. Low maintenance keeps running costs under ₹3/km, beating petrol rivals—ideal if mileage drives your decision.

All about Tata Indica eV2, details, specifications, photos, review and price in India.

Almost after two years, Tata has re-launched the up-graded version of its new gen Indica eV2. The car gets cosmetic as well as technical changes and in this article, we try to know about the new changes in detail.

UPDATE (19th June, 2013) - Tata Motors has launched the 2013 Indica eV2 in Indian market. On the outside it features turn-indicators integrated into the outside rear-view mirrors plus all-new front grille plus chrome garnish. On the inside, it comes equipped with all-new 4-spoke steering wheel, dual-tone interiors, all-new fabric for seats, silver finish center console and electrically adjustable out-side rear-view mirrors. Technically, it features all-new suspension system (dual path) and new transmission system, which is now cable type, to reduce the vibrations and improve the gear-shifts. Tata also unveiled the CNG variant of 2013 Indica eV2 and it will be sold as ‘Indica eV2 eMax’.

Exterior

The face of the car receives the major changes. With new set of headlights, front grille and restyled bumper, the car now looks identical to its elder sibling. The twin barrel clear lens headlights with long stripe of orange colored side indicator looks attractive with its chrome finished multi-layered front grille. The restyled bumper also looks sharp and aggressive with edgy lines over it. The new air-dam is placed in the lower section of its front bumper and comes with integrated round shaped fog lights. Move to the side of this car and you will notice new set of 8-spoke alloy wheels which looks extremely sporty with decals on its side doors. The car features no wheel arches and looks elegant with body colored door handles and ORVMs with metal strips. The tail section of the car also gets a new body colored rear spoiler integrated with stop lamp. The sharp lines on its rear bumper and boot gate also look attractive while its tall tail lights give it a unique identity.

Interior

The new shadow beige interiors improve the aura inside this car. Its dual tone fabric seats and door trims inserted with fabric looks premium and make this car look different than before. The four-spoke steering wheel also looks attractive inside. The car is quite spacious for five people. There is enough head and shoulder room at its front. Its front seats are more comfortable than its rear seats as they lack under thigh support. Three full size adults can enjoy optimum shoulder and head room at the back.

Comfort and Convenience

The top variant of new Indica eV2 comes with modern features like power steering, powerful AC with heater, all four power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear defogger, adjustable front seats and headrests, keyless entry with remote boot opener.

Dashboard and Storage

The design and texture of the dashboard is nearly a decade old but to give it a fresh appeal, Tata has used the new shadow beige color which surely works. The circular dials in its instrument console for its analogue tachometer speedometer and fuel gauge is also placed on the dashboard. The silver finishing on its central console further enhances the beauty of this car. The lockable glove box is quite spacious and comes with two cup holders. The front door pockets can also be used frequently. Indica eV2 also has a rear parcel shelf for storage and comes with a boot capacity of 220 litres which can be increased by folding down its split rear seats.

Music System

Company now offers Indica eV2 with an integrated music system with 2 speakers. It’s a radio/MP3/CD player which comes with USB and Aux-in ports. The car is also enabled with Bluetooth connectivity.

Engine and Gearbox

Indica eV2 comes with one engine each of petrol and diesel. The 1.2L 4-cylinder MPFI engine generates a maximum power output of 65.3 bhp at 5000 rpm. The torque output of this liquid-cooled engine is of 99.8 Nm which is accessible at 2700 rpm. The diesel engine is the new 1.4L 4-cylinder common rail CR4 engine. This SOHC engine pumps out a power output of 70 bhp at 4000 rpm. The maximum torque output (140 nm) of this engine ranges from 1800-3000 rpm. Both engines are mated with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Acceleration and Performance

This new age Indica feels much better than before in terms of acceleration and performance. The car is now 10kgs lighter than before which helps it to get an impressive power to weight ratio. The petrol engine of the car feels quite powerful in city traffic. The instant throttle reaction and less gear shifts make it easy for you to drive this car. The 100Nm of torque starts coming as early as 2700rpm which helps it to reach 0-100km/hr in less than 15 seconds. The engine sounds quite refined and makes less noise at high rpms. The new CR4 diesel engine has also taken a big step forward. Tata has worked on the gear ratios and now you need to make less gear shifts. This motor feels quite confident at low rpms and starts pulling power as early as 1500rpm. Throttle reaction is much better than before and it feels less strained at high rpms. The car reaches 0-100km/hr in less than 14.5 seconds and records a top speed of 155km/hr.

Mileage and Safety Features

The CR4 engine may give you an overall fuel efficiency of around 15km/ltr while its petrol engine may return you a mileage of around 14km/ltr. The car comes with safety features like remote locking and collapsible steering.

Suspension and Brakes

The car features dual path suspension at its front and semi-independent shock absorbers at the back. It’s equipped with disc brakes at its front and drum brakes at the back.

Ride and Handling

The long wheelbase of 2400mm and ground clearance of 165mm makes this car stable at high speeds. The wider tyres also improve it handling around corners while its suspension system also gives you comfortable rides. The heavy steering stops you to move frequently in city traffic and comes with a minimum turning radius of 4.9m which makes it difficult for you to park this car at tight spaces.

Shades, Variants and Warranty

Indica eV2 is available in eight variants; four each of petrol and diesel. It’s available in five different shades and comes with a warranty of 2years/ 75000kilomters.

Verdict

New Indica eV2 ranges from INR 3.29 lakhs- 4.88 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi (approx., may vary)). We won’t recommend you its petrol version as there are many better options available at this price but we strongly believe its diesel engine makes it a complete value for money car. At this price, there is no other diesel car which is as powerful and spacious as this car. Moreover, the list of modern features proves to be a big advantage for this car. Yes, it’s not as refined and stylish as modern diesel cars but if you are looking for an economical option which can fit in your tight budget then you can opt for this car.
