Renault Duster
General information and overview
The new Duster is a compact SUV rebuilt on Renault’s CMF‑B platform that keeps the model’s celebrated strengths—roomy cabin, tall ride height, sturdy suspension and strong practicality—while adding modern refinement, improved build quality and hybridised powertrain choices suited to India. Key aspects for Indian buyers include the comfortable and spacious rear row with generous headroom and shoulder space, a suspension tuned for rough roads, and a simple, durable interior that prioritises usability over frills; available ADAS and 360‑degree camera on select variants add contemporary safety and convenience even if some creature comforts like sunroof and powered driver seat are not offered. Mechanically, Renault is offering a 1.2‑litre mild‑hybrid petrol option (likely the primary India offering) and turbo variants which balance refinement and efficiency, making the Duster easy and economical to live with across city and highway duties. Overall the Duster is aimed at buyers who want a no‑nonsense, capable SUV that keeps running and maintenance costs in check while delivering the space and composure needed for Indian roads.
I view the 2025 Renault Duster as India's rugged SUV reborn on the CMF-B platform, retaining its compact size—barely longer or wider than before—yet feeling more substantial with enhanced rigidity for better crash safety and handling. It boasts over 200mm ground clearance, a planted suspension that conquers potholes and gravel effortlessly, and a tough go-anywhere vibe perfect for our roads. Inside, space abounds with ample leg, head, and shoulder room, quality materials, and essentials like a modern touchscreen, ADAS, and 360-camera, though no sunroof or power driver's seat keeps it practical. The 1.2-litre mild-hybrid engine, likely for India, offers 128bhp, refined punch, instant electric torque for city ease, and smooth highway stability, ditching diesel for efficient, low-maintenance motoring. Quieter cabin, sharp throttle, and no body roll make it family-friendly and fun, striking a balance of old-school charm and new tech that positions it as a comeback king against Creta or Grand Vitara, especially for value-driven buyers eyeing long-term reliability.
Expert opinion and recommendation
I find the new Renault Duster to be a compelling package for buyers who prioritise ruggedness, space and low running costs over glossy premium trimmings; the CMF-B based chassis delivers a planted, confidence-inspiring ride and the available mild-hybrid/turbo powertrains give usable performance with noticeably better refinement than the old Duster while keeping maintenance simple. The cabin is more modern and spacious, and the suspension soaks up rough Indian roads with ease, but Renault has kept the spec list pragmatic—no sunroof and some convenience features are pared back even on higher trims, so if you want a feature-loaded urban SUV there are more pampered rivals. For buyers who value a sensible, go-anywhere SUV that feels durable, offers good interior space and returns strong real-world fuel economy, the Duster makes a persuasive case; for those who want premium tech and plush cabin touches as priority, it’s less compelling.
I find the new Renault Duster a compelling revival that blends its legendary ruggedness with modern upgrades, making it a smart buy for Indian buyers seeking a tough, practical SUV without the frills overload. Driving it reveals a planted ride on bad roads, absorbent suspension that soaks up potholes effortlessly, and a quieter cabin than before, thanks to the CMF-B platform's rigidity. The hybrid powertrain shines with instant throttle response in city traffic, starting in electric mode for smooth low-speed cruising, and enough pull on highways without strain, positioning it well against Creta or Seltos. Space is generous with good legroom and under-thigh support, ideal for families, while features like ADAS, touchscreen, and 360-camera add safety without excess. Missing sunroof and power seats keep it honest, not pretending to be premium, but that's its charm—raw, dependable, and go-anywhere capable with over 200mm ground clearance. For India's chaotic roads, this Duster delivers value, refinement, and that unmistakable character, urging me to recommend it strongly if priced right around Rs 10-16 lakh come January 2026 launch.
Recent news and announcements
The next-generation Renault Duster has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time, with a heavily camouflaged test mule caught on camera in Kerala. The new Duster is expected to retain its rugged looks with features like LED headlamps, boxy wheel arches, and plastic cladding. It will be based on Renault’s CMF-B platform and is set to launch in India around November 2025. I think this new design will appeal to fans of the original Duster.
Renault has confirmed that the new Duster will come in a seven-seater version called the Bigster, which was recently unveiled globally. The Bigster will have a wheelbase of 2,657mm and will feature advanced driver assistance systems, a 7-inch instrument cluster, and a 10-inch infotainment system. This move is likely to make the Duster more competitive in the Indian market.
The upcoming Renault Duster will feature advanced safety features, including a suite of driver assistance systems, reverse sensors, and a robust structure designed for better crash protection. These enhancements are part of Renaults effort to meet stringent safety standards and provide a safer driving experience. I believe these features will be a major selling point for the new Duster.
The 2024 Renault Duster is expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) when it launches in India in 2025. The SUV will feature a fresh exterior design inspired by the Dacia Bigster concept, including slim headlights and Y-shaped LED DRLs. It will also come with dual digital displays and Y-shaped inserts around the AC vents. I believe this pricing will make it a strong contender in the compact SUV segment.
The new Renault Duster will be offered with three powertrain options, including two turbo-petrol engines and one hybrid option. The engines include a 120 hp 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, a 140 hp 1.2-litre turbo petrol, and a 170 hp 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine, with the latter two options featuring a mild hybrid setup. This variety should cater to different consumer preferences.
Pricing details and changes
I expect Renault to position the Duster competitively in India with prices likely starting around Rs. 10 lakh (ex‑showroom) for the base variants and rising to roughly Rs. 15–16 lakh ex‑showroom for the higher mild‑hybrid/turbo trims, translating to on‑road prices depending on city taxes and insurance in the Rs. 11.5 lakh to Rs. 18 lakh range in major metros. Given Renault’s strategy and the car’s value-focused character, this price band undercuts several feature-heavy rivals while offering a more rugged character and better real-world running economy thanks to hybridisation. My read is that the Duster will be most attractive to buyers seeking sensible pricing, low ownership costs and a durable SUV footprint; buyers who prioritise the latest cabin gizmos or a plush badge may feel that some equipment compromises at the top end reduce the appeal despite the competitive pricing.
I see the new Renault Duster shaping up as a value champion in India's SUV segment, with expected ex-showroom prices starting at Rs 10 lakh for base mild-hybrid variants and climbing to Rs 16 lakh for top trims, based on its positioning against rivals like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. On-road prices will vary by city—adding 10-15% for registration, insurance, and taxes—pushing a base model to around Rs 11.5-12 lakh in Delhi or Mumbai, while top variants could hit Rs 18-19 lakh on-road, keeping it accessible for budget-conscious buyers. This pricing strategy leverages the 1.2-litre mild-hybrid's efficiency and low maintenance appeal, undercutting feature-packed Koreans without sacrificing core strengths like rugged build and space. From my drives, this affordability aligns perfectly with India's price-sensitive market, offering hybrid tech and ADAS at a segment-disrupting value, making running costs lower than diesel rivals. Renault's smart play here could drive volumes, as I anticipate strong sales if they stick to this range, helping buyers save significantly over pricier alternatives while getting a capable, future-proof SUV.
Fuel efficiency information
On Indian roads the mild‑hybrid Duster is likely to deliver excellent real‑world city efficiency because it starts and runs in electric‑assist modes at low speeds, with combined figures realistically in the high teens to low twenties km/l depending on traffic, while the petrol-only turbo will be slightly thirstier on highways; this makes the Duster a smart choice if you care about lower running costs and fuel bills over ownership.
I rate the Duster's hybrid powertrain highly for India, delivering real-world figures around 20-25 kmpl in mixed city-highway use, with EV mode excelling in traffic for superior efficiency over pure petrol rivals. This slashes running costs to under Rs 2/km on petrol, a game-changer for high-mileage commuters versus thirsty competitors, making it my top pick for fuel-conscious buyers.

Duster is a fully-loaded machine. It's been designed with adventure in mind. It is equipped with features like hill assist, four-wheel drive etc that puts duster much into the portion of cars built for off-road drivings.
I heard that the front doors can be opened anytime(while in motion as well) even if it's locked. Is that true? Car is of course the best but this is kind of worrying me especially when I think of traveling with kids.
