About
The Maruti Celerio Diesel LDi (O) features a 793cc twin-cylinder DDiS 125 diesel engine, which is the smallest diesel engine in any passenger car worldwide. Despite its small size, the engine offers decent driveability in city conditions, with good throttle response and controlled turbo-lag. The car has a well-packaged cabin with comfortable seating, adequate legroom, and a 235-liter boot. The suspension provides a neutral ride quality and predictable handling. However, the engines poor refinement and noise are notable drawbacks. The car also comes with essential features like ABS, dual front airbags, and a decent music system in the top-spec variant. Overall, it is a practical choice for urban commuters who prioritize fuel efficiency and affordability.

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Maruti Celerio Diesel LDi (O) is a pragmatic choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency and affordability. While it excels in city commutes with its peppy performance up to 70-80 kph and impressive fuel economy, it falls short in terms of refinement and highway performance. The engine, though noisy and lacking in top-end power, is well-suited for urban driving. The cabin is well-packaged with adequate legroom, excellent headroom, and a decent boot space. However, the higher variants come at a premium, and the overall refinement of the engine can be a significant drawback. For buyers who value practicality and fuel efficiency over refinement and highway capabilities, the Celerio Diesel is a viable option.
Price
The Maruti Celerio Diesel LDi (O) was launched in India with a price range of between Rs. 4.65 lakhs to Rs. 5.71 lakhs (ex-Delhi). On-road prices, however, can vary depending on the state and local taxes, typically adding around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 70,000 to the ex-showroom price. This places the on-road price of the LDi (O) variant around Rs. 5.15 lakhs to Rs. 6.41 lakhs. The premium over the petrol variant, especially for the higher trims, might seem steep for some buyers, but the fuel efficiency and Marutis reliable after-sales service can justify the cost for many.

Maruti Suzuki had high hopes for the Celerio diesel, touting it as Indias most fuel-efficient diesel car. However, the cars slow acceleration and the need for constant gear shifts made it less appealing for many drivers. I think the focus on fuel efficiency was commendable, but it should have been balanced with better performance.

The Celerio diesels variants, including the LDi (O), came with basic features like AC and power steering, while higher trims added more amenities such as a Bluetooth-compatible music system and alloy wheels. Despite these features, the car failed to gain significant market traction. I believe that adding more modern features could have helped, but the core issue was the engines performance.

Despite its impressive fuel efficiency of 27.62 km/l, the Celerio diesel struggled in the market and was eventually discontinued due to low sales. The cars performance, while economical, was criticized for being slow, particularly in reaching higher speeds. I think the lack of power and the need for frequent gear shifts might have deterred many potential buyers.

The Celerio diesel was available in variants similar to its petrol counterpart, including LDi, VDi, ZDi, and ZDi (O), with the top variant featuring dual airbags, ABS, and other safety features. The interior and exterior design remained identical to the petrol version, except for the DDiS badge. I believe the decision to keep the design consistent was a good move, but it might not have been enough to attract more buyers.

The Maruti Celerio diesel, launched in 2015, was powered by a unique 793 cc twin-cylinder DDiS diesel engine, which was the lightest in its class, weighing just 89 kg. This engine produced 47 bhp and 125 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. I believe this innovative engine was a significant step for Suzuki, showcasing their capability in developing efficient diesel engines.
