Ford Ikon Diesel

About
The Ford Ikon Diesel is a sedan that has left a lasting impression on the Indian automotive scene. Introduced in the late 1990s, it was designed with the Indian market in mind, offering a blend of performance, comfort, and practicality. The diesel variants, such as the 1.4 Duratorq and 1.8 litre engines, are known for their robust performance and excellent fuel economy. The car features a simple yet effective mechanical design, a light clutch with smooth gear shifts, and a steering feel that is characteristic of Ford vehicles. While it may lack in terms of modern features and has some drawbacks like poor braking and cheap interior plastics, the Ikons ride and handling balance, reasonable cabin space, and decently sized boot make it a reliable and comfortable choice. Its timeless design and the ability to maintain high speeds comfortably, such as cruising at 120-140 kmph, add to its appeal. Overall, the Ford Ikon Diesel remains a solid option for those seeking a dependable and economical sedan.

USER OPINION

Our take on this /// Verdict
The Ford Ikon Diesel is a stalwart in the Indian automotive landscape, particularly for those seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient sedan. From my perspective, this car excels in several key areas. The diesel variants, especially the 1.4 Duratorq and 1.8 litre engines, offer exceptional fuel economy, with users reporting mileage of around 20-22 kmpl in the city and up to 24 kmpl on the highway. The handling and ride quality are also commendable, with a light clutch and smooth gear shifts making it a joy to drive. However, there are some drawbacks, such as the poor braking performance and the use of cheap plastics in the interior. Despite these, the Ikons timeless design, comfortable ride, and robust engine make it a solid choice for those prioritizing value for money and reliability.
Price
When the Ford Ikon was available in the Indian market, the prices varied based on the variant and engine option. For the diesel variants, the ex-showroom price typically ranged from around 5 lakhs to 7 lakhs, depending on the model year and specific trim. On-road prices would be higher, including taxes and other costs, often reaching up to 7.5 lakhs to 9 lakhs. Its important to note that these prices are historical, as Ford has since exited the Indian market. However, for those considering purchasing a used Ford Ikon, these price ranges can serve as a benchmark.
Latest Updates
Tuesday, 15 March 2011 03:30 AM The Ford Ikon Diesel saw its final days in the Indian market with the implementation of BS4 emission norms, which forced Ford India to discontinue the model in early 2011. This move was part of the broader shift towards cleaner and more efficient engines. I think this was a necessary step, but it marked the end of an era for a car that was once very popular.
Saturday, 01 November 2008 07:50 PM In November 2008, the Ford Ikon Diesel underwent a significant facelift, introducing a new diesel engine from the Duratorq engine family. This engine featured common-rail injection, delivering 68 hp and 160 Nm of torque. The update also included several cosmetic and feature enhancements. I believe this facelift helped extend the cars lifespan in a competitive market.
Monday, 01 September 2008 07:05 AM Ford India re-launched the ageing Ikon with a diesel engine borrowed from the Fiesta in the late 2000s. This move was in response to rising fuel prices and the increasing demand for diesel cars. The refreshed exterior looks and new engine made the Ikon an attractive option for those seeking an economical mid-size sedan.
Wednesday, 01 June 2005 07:01 AM The Ford Ikon Diesel was known for its performance and dynamics, making it a favorite among driving enthusiasts. The 1.8-liter diesel engine, although not as strong as some would have liked, provided a credible driving experience. I think the balance between performance and economy was a key factor in its popularity.
Wednesday, 01 December 1999 06:07 PM The introduction of the Ford Ikon in 1999 marked a significant entry into the lower mid-size sedan segment in India. The diesel variant quickly gained traction due to its affordable price and robust engine. It played a dual role as both a car to drive and one to be driven in, making it a versatile choice for many buyers.
Friday, 01 October 1999 07:58 PM The Ford Ikon Diesel was part of a broader strategy by Ford India to capture the mid-size sedan market. The cars success was largely due to its ability to offer a blend of affordability, features, and performance, making it a compelling option in the early 2000s. I think its impact on the Indian automotive market was substantial.
Sunday, 01 August 1999 05:06 PM The Ikons diesel engine was initially criticized for being aged and not as powerful as some competitors, but it still managed to deliver reliable performance. The cars overall package, including its handling and fuel efficiency, made it a solid choice for many Indian buyers.
Saturday, 01 May 1999 04:37 PM The Ford Ikon Diesel was produced at Ford Indias Chennai plant and was assembled using components from various global sources. This localization helped keep costs down, making the car more accessible to the Indian market. I believe this strategy was crucial in the cars success.
Thursday, 01 April 1999 08:39 AM When launched, the Ford Ikon Diesel was positioned between the Esteem and the upper crust sedans like the City, Lancer, and Astra. Its pricing and features made it an attractive option for those looking for a reliable and economical sedan. I think it filled a significant gap in the market at that time.
Monday, 01 March 1999 07:37 AM The Ford Ikon Diesel was initially introduced with a 1.4-liter and later a 1.8-liter diesel engine, both of which were part of the Duratorq engine family. These engines were known for their fuel efficiency and moderate power output, making the Ikon a practical choice for daily driving.
Mileage
Friday, 22 November 2024 06:13 AM The Ford Ikon Diesel is renowned for its impressive fuel efficiency, making it an attractive option for those concerned about running costs. Users have consistently reported mileage figures of around 20-22 kmpl in city driving and up to 24 kmpl on highways. This is particularly impressive given the age of the vehicle, with many owners reporting similar efficiency even after a decade of use. This makes the Ikon an excellent choice for those looking to minimize fuel expenses.

Ford Ikon 1.4TDCI is a Winner

It is an "A" category car which the dumb FORD company has discontinued. If it wishes to gain ground in India it needs to re-introduce IKON, with a new face, a new name and with added features, added Sales and Service centres. FORD India is "LETHARGIC". Lost to other brands due to sheer neglect and apathy.

Best Features: What not. Entire concept of FORD IKON is a smasher. Since the day I got it, I am in LOVE with this car.

Pros: Comfort, Handling, Sturdy, Good built quality, Fuel Economy, Value for Money, Pickup-Virtually everything

Cons: Ford's inability to continue this car with a contemporary face lift. Ford Aspire is merely a dumb replacement, Reintroduce Ford Ikon, with a face lift and a new name. It is still a Winner.

Driving this Josh machine for the past 3 months.... Really amazing.... the performance, mileage, power, and beuty...... Very comfortable vehicle....
Yesterday had the 1st free service... staisfied with the service personnel.... Mr. Kannayan (Service manager) and Mr. Harish Kumar (Trial run in-charge) (Rock City Ford, Salem, Tamil Nadu) were much friendly and explained everything in detail.... My engine came out of the showroom refreshed.... Finally they charged just Rs. 31/- for a rubber bush which will not come under the warranty.... Really enjoying the drive....

Ford IKON TDCi - I am using since last one year. I wonder its performance, average. I am getting 23 kms in city. There is no comparison. I feel, the company should go ahead with the product, instead of holding it.

Really wonderful performer, medium group always like this luxurious within their range. In all respect I recommend it.

Price wise its a value to Money.

Look wise its totally sporty sedan like racing car having small steering wheel makes you feel that you driving sports car.

steering wheel - power

doors
- power windows controls

suspension - good for 5 peoples.  when you are using tubeless tyres then suspension is extremely good

lights - front lights looks smarter but you need to switch on fog lights while driving on dark roads, highway.

AC and Heater - extremely good in performance.

seats are comfortable.

rear boot is having a big space that can accommodate 2 big briefcases and other small bags too.

Mileage is a very important factor that everybody rely on while purchasing car

I am getting good response when you will talk about average mileage of FORD IKON 1.4 Dura Torque i.e. 21+ Km per Litres.
