The Datsun K2 was envisioned as a small car based on the previous generation Nissan Micra platform but with a new design that would differentiate it from its Nissan counterpart. It was to be a petrol-only model, lighter and faster than the Micra, yet with a lower level of features to maintain cost competitiveness. The car was designed to be as roomy as the current Micra hatchback, with innovative features like a potential bench-type front seat to accommodate three adults. It was set to be launched in India early in 2014, targeting the budget segment dominated by cars like the Hyundai i10 and Maruti A-Star. The production was planned at the Renault-Nissan joint manufacturing facility in Oragadam, near Chennai, with sales and service handled through Nissans pan-India network.
