Our take on this /// Verdict
The Chevrolet Sail LS Diesel is a solid contender in the entry-level sedan segment in India. It boasts a 1.3L Multijet diesel engine, co-developed by Chevrolet and Fiat, which offers excellent torque and decent fuel economy. The cars ride quality and handling are standout features, making it feel more like a luxury car than an entry-level sedan. The interior is spacious, with comfortable seating and good legroom, although some users have noted that the interior plastics could be more aesthetically pleasing. Despite some minor issues with customer service and occasional mechanical glitches, the overall package makes the Chevrolet Sail LS Diesel a good value for money. Its stability at high speeds, smooth gear shifting, and effective ABS braking system further enhance its appeal.
Price
When the Chevrolet Sail LS Diesel was available in the Indian market, its ex-showroom price varied by city but generally fell in the range of 7 to 9 lakhs. On-road prices, including taxes and other costs, would typically be around 8 to 11 lakhs, depending on the city and state. This pricing positioned the Sail competitively against other entry-level sedans like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze. Considering the features, performance, and comfort it offers, the Sail was a compelling option for those seeking a reliable and spacious sedan without breaking the bank.
Latest Updates
Thursday, 18 May 2017 06:52 PM
Chevrolet India announced that it would discontinue sales of all its products, including the Chevrolet Sail LS (Diesel), effective December 31, 2017. This decision was part of the companys strategy to utilize its Indian facilities for export markets only. The Sail LS (Diesel) was one of the popular variants in the Sail lineup. I think this move was a significant blow to Chevrolets presence in the Indian market.

In December 2016, Chevrolet India offered benefits of up to Rs. 55,000 on the updated Chevrolet Sail series, including the Sail LS (Diesel). This was an attempt to boost sales before the eventual discontinuation. The Sail LS (Diesel) featured a 1.3 litre SDE SMARTECH turbocharged diesel engine producing 74bhp and 190Nm of torque. I believe these offers were a last-ditch effort to clear inventory.

The Chevrolet Sail LS (Diesel) was launched with a focus on providing a spacious and comfortable ride. It featured 25 storage spaces, Flex Flat and 60:40 Folding Rear Row seats, making it one of the most spacious cars in its segment. The car also boasted Chevrolets signature dual port chrome grille and Hawk Wing styled headlamps. I think the interior space was one of its strongest selling points.

The Chevrolet Sail LS (Diesel) was powered by a 1.3 litre SMARTECH turbocharged diesel engine, which delivered 77bhp at 4,000rpm and 205Nm of torque at 1,750rpm. This engine was a result of the alliance between GM and Fiat, using the Fiat 1248 cc MultiJet motor. The car came with a 5-speed manual transmission. I believe this engine provided a good balance of power and fuel efficiency.

Chevrolet India highlighted the safety features of the Sail LS (Diesel), including ABS, driver airbag, and speed-sensitive autolock. These features were part of the higher trim levels and were aimed at enhancing the safety quotient of the vehicle. I think these safety features were a welcome addition in a segment where safety was often compromised.
Friday, 02 November 2012 05:09 AM
The Chevrolet Sail LS (Diesel) had a fuel efficiency of 22.1 kmpl, as certified by ARAI. This made it a fuel-efficient option in the small sedan segment. The car also had a 42-litre fuel tank, which was decent for its class. I believe the fuel efficiency was a key factor for many buyers.
Friday, 02 November 2012 11:14 AM
The Sail LS (Diesel) was priced competitively in the Indian market, with the LS variant starting at around Rs. 6.59 lakhs. This pricing strategy was aimed at attracting buyers in the highly competitive small sedan segment. I think the pricing was aggressive but necessary given the competition.
Friday, 02 November 2012 12:01 PM
Chevrolet emphasized the localization of the Sail LS (Diesel) to meet local requirements. The car contained 80% Indian parts by 2018, which helped in reducing costs and making the vehicle more affordable. I believe this localization effort was crucial for its market viability.
Friday, 02 November 2012 02:13 PM
The Chevrolet Sail LS (Diesel) featured a range of comfort and convenience features, including power windows, folding key, driver seatbelt reminder, and an integrated 2 DIN audio system with 4 speakers. These features were designed to enhance the driving and passenger experience. I think these features made the car feel more premium than its price suggested.
Friday, 02 November 2012 05:48 PM
The design of the Chevrolet Sail LS (Diesel) was described as understated but functional. It featured a muscular crease on the bonnet, upswept headlamps, and a new Chevrolet family grille. The rear end had Linea-ish taillamps and a beefy bumper. I think the design, while not groundbreaking, was practical and appealing.
Mileage
Wednesday, 20 November 2024 10:25 PM
The Chevrolet Sail LS Diesel offers commendable fuel economy, with users reporting mileage of around 17-20 kmpl with the air conditioner on, and up to 22 kmpl on highways under optimal driving conditions. In city traffic, the mileage can dip to around 12-15 kmpl, but this is still respectable given the cars performance and comfort. This makes the Sail a practical choice for both city driving and long road trips, helping to keep running costs manageable.
