Vehicle Overview | Yamaha SZ-R was a model sold in India before the SZ-RR version 2.0. It came with the older 153cc, single cylinder engine producing 12 BHP and 12.8 Nm of torque. Most of the components of the SZ-R were similar to the current generation model while it came with silver finish on most of the parts instead of the Black on the SZ-RR. Performance on the motorcycle was more or less the same while the refinement is higher on the second generation model with Blue Core technology. It rivals Honda Unicorn, Hero Achiever and Bajaj V in the Indian market. |

Yamaha SZ-R Review
Quick Review by Maxabout Team
Except for the different paint job, SZ-R is virtually identical to its younger sibling SZ-X. These both bikes share everything from body parts to their chassis. SZ-R has a familiar face carrying transparent visor and partly body colored cowl. The headlight and rear view mirrors remains unchanged but you will notice the orange colored indicators now being replaced by the clear lens indicators and the extra weight on the both ends of its handlebar. Its tank extensions, front fender and side covers are now offered in silver finish. Yamaha has nicely painted this bike with dual colors. The tank shrouds features the name of this bike. It has black colored 5 spoke alloy wheels, engine and muffler with heat protector. It has a sleek grab rail and wide tyre at the back. The bike shares its dual tail lights and fender with its other siblings. The bike does look well-built than its rival but it lacks the style quotient. Moreover it can easily be mistaken as its cheaper siblings due to its high level of resemblance with them.
Yamaha SZ-R features twin circular pods in its instrument console. Between these two pods you can notice its analogue fuel gauge and other indicators. The right dial sports a much needed Tachometer while on the left side; there is an analogue speedometer and odometer. A digital speedometer would have been an additional advantage for this bike. Unfortunately, there is no element of surprise in this department. The bike shares its engine with the two other bikes of SZ series. It’s powered by a four-stroke, single cylinder 153cc engine. The maximum torque output of this engine is of 12.8 Nm which can be used at 4500 rpm. The heavy amount of torque building is the biggest USP of this engine but its less power output spoils the game. This air-cooled, SOHC engine churns out a maximum power output of 12 Bhp at 7500 rpm. To effectively use the power and torque output of this engine, Yamaha has mated this engine with a five-speed manual gearbox. This gearbox has a gear shift pattern of one gear down and four-gears up.
This engine lacks power and Yamaha has failed to get rid of this problem. This bike is best tuned for city purpose where you are not in much hurry and want to stay away from frequent gear shifts. The early torque building is really impressive but what if you want to cover a long distance in short span? The bike loses out to other potential players like Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS which has brilliant high end performance and easily leaves this bike behind on highways. It is hard to take this bike beyond the speed of 105km/hr as soon after 5000rpm, there is not much power left in this engine. It makes only noise after 7000rpm while other competitors can even reach 9000rpm. Yes, it does 0-60 km/hr in almost 6 seconds which indicates towards its well matched gear ratios and instant throttle response in initial gears. The fourth and fifth gears ratios are much taller and put this bike on the slower side. However, the gearbox functions very smoothly and leaves you with no complain. We wish if the performance and acceleration of this bike was as impressive as the refinement level of its engine which is quite silent even if pushed hard.
Its upraised handlebar offers a nice firm palm grip which helps you to steer it easily. The wide and rear seat of this bike is very comfortable even with a pillion rider. Yamaha SZ-R manages to give you a comfortable yet sporty posture thanks to its well-placed foot-pegs and fuel tank. There is some space under its seat for storage while safety features include pass light, saree guard and powerful headlight. Single coil spring hydraulic shock absorbers at the back and telescopic forks at the front can be seen on this bike. This suspension system has been carried over from its cheaper siblings. This suspension system is nowhere close to the comfort quality offered by other rivals like Bajaj Pulsar135. For better and precise braking, Yamaha has offered a front disc brake of 245mm with a rear drum brake of 130mm. It’s a very effective braking system which always helps you to keep this bike under control.
The advanced braking system has improved the ride quality of this bike. You will be more confident on this bike. The bike handles really well in city traffic and its quite responsive no highways also. The bike manages to stay grounded at high speed thanks to its heavy weight and wheelbase of 1320mm. Its wide rear tyre gives a good hold of the road the bike isn’t much scary around corners. This bike is certainly not as exciting and stable as Pulsar 135 but feels better than many other rivals.
This bike is certainly not a complete value for money bike as at the same price you can get a much stylish, powerful and feature rich bike like Bajaj Pulsar 135. But it can be considered for its looks and refined engine. Moreover it's cheaper than other 150cc bikes and has almost all essential features. So, if you can deal with the poor resale and high maintenance of Yamaha then you can choose this bike otherwise there are many other trusted options available in the market.

User Reviews for Yamaha SZ (2012)
Mileage
SZR is my 3rd vehicle of this company bot not satisfied with any of the vehicle, now this vehicle giving 25 to 30 kmpl mileage which is too less. Recently I have changed the parts from the Yamaha showroom (Angul, Odisha) and all the time I go for the servicing to the showroom only and now they are refusing for the mileage test. My first vehicle (YBX-125) also didn't give satisfying mileage and after 6 years it not in the condition to use. If the company can't give good services then why would people go for this company's vehicles? If mileage will be good then only people will be benefited.
Best Features: Pickup is good
Pros: Ok with other features
Cons: Not satisfied of mileage (25-30)
Best bike in the 150 cc segment
It has a powerful engine and smooth ride quality. Before this one, I was using a Pulsar 150. When comparing both, Yamaha SZ-R is the best one in all aspects.
Best Features: Powerful engine, Built and Ride Quality
Pros: Comfortable Riding Posture
Cons: Nothing
Yamaha SZ-R is an excellent bike
There is no issues from the bike. I went for many long rides on this bike, including Chennai-Ooty route of around 540 km in 9 hrs. Recently I rode this bike 1500+ kms in 3 days and not even experienced any problem.
Best Features: Performance with comfort
Pros: Engine power, comfortable seat, good bike for long ride
Cons: Headlight is not that powerful, braking is not so effective
Best Bike for Commuting and Cruising. . . .
Hi, I am using YAMAHA SZR for the past 3 and half years, at first i use to get mileage of 40kmpl, after regular service i got 52kmpl if i ride @ 50kmph. Now I am using my bike as the regular commuting and weekly cruising purpose. Daily i use to commute 40kms. Now i use to come to my home town which is 165 kms from my workplace on my bike. For the past six days i travelled 850 kms on my bike such an amazing experience. While cruising i reached the top speed of 115kmph which gives good stability and control. Pick up is little bit lower than FZ thats it, throttle sounds good and engine smoothness is amazing. Kindly font expect pick up if the pillion weights more than 80kg.
Best Features: Engine Immobilizer, Aerodynamic design, Crystal clear headlamp and indicators, rider seating position and pillion seater has good comfort.
Pros: Sportive Design, Engine smoothness, Pickup, Braking & Handling
Cons: Fool rest could be kept little back, Lack of Digital Speedometer, mileage drops from 50-39 while cruising at 80 kmph
SZ-X is a Good Commuter
I used this bike past 4 yrs, according to my experience, this is a good commuter for long ride. Value for money economically and mileage also OK for me. But, it needs more power after 70 kmph. Throttle response should improve because it's not a 100 cc machine. I like the design of this bike, especially the cowl, but if it comes with disc brakes it will get sportier looks.
Best Features: Tank capacity of 14 Lt, bright headlamps
Pros: Throttle response from 0 to 60 kmph, bike looks & bright headlamps
Cons: No disc brakes, taking too much time to achieve 70 to 100 kmph, suspension can improve with gas type shock absorbers
Yamaha SZ-R Discussion
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SZ-X AND SZ-R, PL. REPLY.
YAMAHA SZR has good handling, stability, and braking than Pulsar 150, Unicorn 150
The SZR or the SZ-RR Ver. 2 has the engine of 150cc but has the power of 125cc. It has lacking power for a 150cc bike, better to get Pulsar 135LS it has more sportier look, better mileage through its smaller displacement, and more power on top speed and a decent acceleration...
Yamaha SZR is the poorest bike when we talk about mileage , and above that the Yamaha official Staff and officials too are liars/cheaters .... i have this bike from last 4 years and till date i never got 30+ mileage ... even worst...now i am getting 25 KMPL only... in first year i raised this issue dozens of times but what Yamaha people use to do was just making excuses like patrol quality may be bad... your driving style may be no right.. and blah blah blah...
Once they did a Drama..after much insisting they agreed to replace the carburetor of my Bike , and they really changed it..BUT after a year when i was having a casual chat with Yamaha dealer`s mechanic .. he out of ignorance told me that the carburetor which yamaha staff replaced was actually from his old yamaha SZR bike... this thing came as a big shock to me.. so by this only you gets an idea on how high the standards at Yamaha are... never buy Yamaha product...believe me you will regret it afterwords...

Hi all,
I have a close-friend of mine has a Yamaha SZ-R Which he purchased about exactly a year back and wanted to sell. He wanted to sell it for Rs. 45,000. But, i really don’t know the market price and how much i can pay for it and own it.
Please do advice me as to how much i can pay for it. As far as i know it’s well-maintained but, he has not renewed the insurance and also i need to transfer it from Andhra Pradesh to Karnataka and re-register. Also let me know the re-registration fee/transfer fee if possible. Eagerly waiting for a proper answer.

honda twister is far better dan szr :P
This particular bike meant only for style. Its mileage is worst, fit and finish of this bike is pathetic, moreover yamaha service sucks a lot.... My advice is if u want an good 150 cc commuter- suzuki gs 150r is better bet, infact Bajaj discover 150 cc is also an tremendous VFM product against this troublesome SZR.....
