Toyota is set to make a comeback in the sub-4 meter SUV market with the debut of its version of the Fronx-based crossover on April 3, 2024. The vehicle is likely to be called the "Urban Cruiser Taisor," a name Toyota previously trademarked. It will share the same features and engine options as the Fronx but will have a distinct design.
Exterior Design
The overall silhouette of the car will remain similar to the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, but Toyota will add its own styling elements to differentiate it. This includes a new grille with Toyota badging, redesigned bumpers, unique headlights and DRLs, tail lamp signatures, and differently styled alloy wheels. A teaser video shared by the brand shows different-looking DRLs, a restyled grille, and a new orange color.
Interior Design
While the dashboard style and layout might remain similar to the Fronx crossover, Toyota may alter not just the logo but also the cabin colors to set it apart. Unlike the Maruti model's black and burgundy interior, the Toyota version may feature a lighter interior with a beige-colored theme.
Features
The Toyota Taisor will inherit all the features present on the Fronx, including a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heads-up display, automatic climate control, and cruise control. Safety features will include up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, an electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold assist, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a 360-degree camera.
Powertrain
Like other Maruti-Toyota shared cars, the Toyota crossover will share engines and gearboxes with the Fronx. It is expected to come with a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine that generates 90 PS mated to a 5-speed AMT or 5-speed manual. Additionally, a 1-liter turbo-petrol engine producing 100 PS and 148 Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, is also anticipated. A CNG version could be introduced post-launch.
Expected Price and Rivals
The ex-showroom price of the Toyota Taisor is expected to be between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 13 lakh. It may be priced slightly higher than the Maruti Fronx in different variants. Competitors in this crossover's niche, apart from the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, include the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and the upcoming Mahindra XUV300.
