Toyota to Reveal New Crossover Based on Maruti Fronx Platform Tomorrow

Toyota is all set to reveal its version of the Maruti Fronx, a crossover that marks Toyota's re-entry into the sub-4 meter SUV segment in India. The global launch of this new model is scheduled for April 3, 2024, following its initial announcement in late 2023. Updates to the front fascia such as a redesigned grille and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) have been referred to by hints.

Exterior Design

While the basic body structure remains similar to the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Toyota will introduce unique styling elements to distinguish its version. These changes will include a redesigned grille with Toyota badging, revised bumpers, distinct headlight and DRL designs, and unique tail lamp designs. The crossover will also be offered in a new orange color, not available with the Fronx.

Interior Design

The interior of the Toyota Taisor is expected to retain the same dashboard layout as the Fronx but may feature different cabin colors. Instead of the black and burgundy interior of the Maruti model, the Toyota variant could offer a lighter beige-themed interior, creating a more spacious and airy feel inside the cabin. When it comes to the inside atmosphere of the Taisor, this color scheme adjustment could make it seem more upscale than that of the Maruti equivalent.

Expected Features

The Toyota Taisor is likely to inherit all features from the Fronx, including a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, heads-up display, automatic climate control, and cruise control. Safety features are expected to include up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, an electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold assist, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a 360-degree camera.

Same Powertrains

Following the pattern of previous Maruti-Toyota collaborations, the Toyota Taisor is expected to share engines and gearboxes with the Fronx. This includes a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with 5-speed manual and AMT options, and a 1-liter turbo-petrol (Boosterjet) engine producing 100 PS and 148 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. While a CNG variant may be considered, it is unlikely to be available at launch.

Expected Price and Rivals

The Toyota Taisor is expected to be priced between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom), slightly higher than comparable variants of the Maruti Fronx. It will compete against popular models like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and the upcoming Mahindra XUV300.

Toyota has made a calculated decision to increase its market share in India's cutthroat sub-4-meter SUV market with the launch of the Taisor. Due to its unique design, innovative technologies, and hybrid drivetrain, the Taisor is positioned to offer clients a compelling option in this popular sector. The Taisor builds on the success of the Maruti Fronx platform and adds distinctive Toyota features to appeal to consumers looking for a compact SUV that combines efficiency, technology, and style.
